Report Card: How do the new phase 1 dailies measure up?

Having had a chance both on the live and test servers to do the Shattered Sun Offensive dailies, I think I can safely say that Blizzard has thoroughly outdone themselves. There's variety, there's travel (instead of staying in the same small area all the time), there's excitement, there's good loot, there's all kinds of varied quests that make me think that I may never go back to Ogri'la or Skettis ever again unless I really need something from the vendors. There's still things that could be slightly better, but for the most part, Blizzard has shown that they've taken valuable lessons from previous content and stepped up their design for patch 2.4.
The Shattrath dailies are nice in that they get you out to a few zones you might have not bothered with for a while, and give you an excuse to get other errands done as well. Since the Multiphase Survey takes you out to Nagrand, it's a perfect opportunity to grab your bag of gems for the month from the Consortium if you haven't yet, or do the Spiritual Soup cooking daily if that's the one that's up. While getting the Sunfury Attack Plans, you can gather Mana Berries. Also, grabbing the Plans generally also nets me a few Sunfury Signets, at least a stack of Netherweave, and often a green or an Arcane Tome, so it's a lucrative quest even beyond the reward. Once the effort to get the Quel'danas portal up in Shattrath is ready, you can also get the Demon Broiled Surprise quest done while you do that daily. The dark spot here is the gathering quest. It seems like the Nether Residue is a little bit less plentiful than it should be, and it seemed like I had to wait forever for those last few to drop. That said, it's at least a good excuse to go out and gather an herb, ore, or skin that you're low on for us gatherers, and if you were going to go out gathering anyway, you might as well grab this quest and get some extra gold while you're at it. Otherwise, I might skip it.
The Isle of Quel'danas dailies are relatively easy and have enough twists that they're pretty fun. There's a giant field right next to the quest area that is full of both the Wretched and the robots that you need. The nearby robots and Wretched are often camped, but if you head deeper into the island, you should eventually find a cluster that haven't been taken. The robots drop Motes of Mana, so it's pretty lucrative to kill them. Then you just load up some new cores and watch them walk off. Arming the Sanctum Wards might get a little bit more annoying to finish, since the needed Mana Remnants are a somewhat rare drop off the Wretched. Still, both quests are relatively painless to finish and give you the standard amount of gold.
The Hellfire Peninsula dailies, I think, are the weakest or least well designed group of dailies. First, there's the problem of accessibility. They're located at the Throne of Kil'jaedan, and while you do originally get a quest to teleport directly there using a Legion teleporter located on the Isle of Quel'danas, the quest is not a daily, and on day 2, there does not appear to be a way to use the teleporter to get there. Therefore, you do have to fly directly to Hellfire Peninsula on every other day to use the teleporter. In addition, to get back to Quel'danas from the Throne of Kil'jaedan, you are forced to fly back to Shattrath and take a portal. Bornakk did imply in a recent thread that there may eventually be a portal at the Throne in this thread, but I think he may have the issue confused with a portal in Shattrath. We'll see.
The Hellfire dailies themselves aren't as bad. The fire elementals are plentiful enough that you should find plenty to kill to charge your ember for destroying the portal. They also drop motes of fire, which is a very nice bonus. Also, if the area's too crowded and you can't manage to tap any, simply standing near a fire elemental when it dies will charge your ember, even if you weren't the one who tapped it. Thus, destroying the portal becomes a quick and easy way to get a pack of Shattered Sun Supplies. The other quest, Blood for Blood, was unfortunately so hard to complete that I abandoned it. The difficulty level itself was fine. Kill 4 demons for their blood, and use that blood to siphon and kill 4 elites. Unfortunately, both the demons and the elite mobs were incredibly rare and usually grabbed by someone the minute they spawned. I really didn't feel like waiting around and trying to grab the mobs I needed, so I left.
Hopefully Blizzard ups the spawn rates on the mobs in question [edit - Well, looks like my prayers have been answered], or they get a longer life expectancy once things have calmed down a bit. I'd really like to do the quest, as the reward is 5x Sunfury Signets or Marks of Sargeras, and one of my characters still needs exalted Aldor. Which reminds me, they need to make the demons up here drop Marks of Sargeras, they don't currently.
If there's one more thing I am somewhat concerned about, it's the fact that we're already over 75% done with the first phase of the offensive on my server as of this writing. If the whole island is unlocked too early, It seems like the epic feel of the offensive may be locked. Hopefully the next few phases are a bit slower. All in all though, I very much approve of the new round of dailies. There's some minor things that could be better, but on each character I did them on, I'm about 100g richer and loaded down with motes and greens (thanks in part to the Shattered Sun Supplies). I'd high recommend these quests to anyone looking to get a bit more gold or looking for something new and fun to do in the game. You can check out both John Himes' and Eliah Hecht's various guides as well as my own Phase 2 daily quest walthroughs if you need a few more pointers on how to get them done. Keep checking back here at WoW Insider, as we'll have more guides for these quests, and for each phase's quests as they're unlocked.

The speed of the completion rate is somewhat necessary I think. For many people, the excitement of 2.4 was the new Badge of Justice gear that you could purchase. Since that gear isn't available until Phase 3 (?), making people wait excessively long seems unfair.
I'm actually very happy with the dailies.
I like the gold.
I like the Greens we get in the supply bags.
I like getting Badges of Justice in those supply bags.
W00t for Potions of Rejuvination.
The only thing I dislike is the gathering quest. It's very easy for a Skinner to do; I simply head to Nagrand and assault Clefthoof, getting meat, Leather and other goodies, as well as completing my daily. I 'know' where to go for it. For Herbs or Miners, you are forced to just 'fly around', and hope to spot a node. I've recieved multiple residue from the same node, so it isn't horrible, but I wish I had more control over it.
The only daily that bugs me is the gathering the plans from the BEs.
First of all, HOW MANY TIMES DOES THE LEGION CHANGE THEIR PLANS!!! Seriously, the idea is rather silly. The drop rate though is more important. On my two toons, I was very lucky to get the plans, both days, within 15 kills. It doesn't matter that the BE's drop other lewtz, it is the fact that there are other things I would rather do with my time (like pwing Kael in the Terrace) then zooming around killing Blood Elves.
As for porting from the Isle of QD to Hellfire...omgz, if you are a mage and aren't whoring yourself out for ports to Shatt, please reroll lol.
Overall I'm very happy with the dailies, and they are a much needed break from Ogrilla and Netherwing.

I found the answer.
Netherwing is a wasteland now.
Step 1. Grab all dailies possible at Shat.
Step 2: Head to Netherwing, get the skinning or netherdust daily. Also get the nagrand twighlight portal one.
Step 3: Run into mine and get those.
Step 4: Laugh at there being ravagers and carts aplenty. Collect.
Step 5: Grab pollen and hopefully get enough to do both.
OR
Step 5: Skin and get enough for both.
Step 6: Turn in, head North, go to hellfire.
Step 7: DO all quests there.
Step 8: head to netherstorm, kill blood elves.
Step 9, head to ogrila, do bomb run, maybe demons.
Step 10: go to Nagrand, do calibration and twilight portal.
Step 11: Shat for turn in.
Step 12: Isle for last 2. Port home.
I will investigate the speed this works at. I do know a 300 mount with riding crop makes this not that bad for flight time, and you can hit twilight from Ogrila pretty fast if you cut through the twisting nether.

I'm enjoying the variation of all the new dailies, although after killing (I kid ye not) at least 200 Sunfury for attack plans I realized it was early morning and had to go to bed.
I have concluded that the Elves have called off the attack and the plans were used to form a fantastic paper mache sculpture of Ka'el.
Kezzy Mar 27th 2008 11:42AM
Lol!
Zali Mar 27th 2008 11:56AM
200 BElfs? And no plans? Are you sure you are in the right location? I've done the quest twice and killed 4 the first time, and 3 the second time. I've seen others fly in, kill one or two and fly away. In fact, the second time I killed one, no drop, and then agro'd two more looting the first. Those I killed with AOE, so technically I might have only needed to kill 2.
Sunfury Attack Plans. There is only one place on the Netherstorm map that has the word Sunfury, I think. If you're not killing BElfs there, then thats where to go. If you are, then I just don't know what to tell you.
If I had access to the game or could link a map here at work I'd give better detail. Sorry.

Zali, here's a map:

"just click link to this map" once you've marked it and then copy the updated url
Zali Mar 27th 2008 12:44PM
I'm at work. I can't get to that site because it is blocked by our firewall. Sorry.
I think it is called Sunfury Platau or something. It is in the south east quadrent of the map. Between the ghost town and that southeast mana forge... can't remember the name of that at the moment either. haha. Sorry. I'd do this stuff from home instead of work... but I can't be bothered there. To busy with my daily quests.
Lab Monkey Mar 27th 2008 12:54PM
I've picked my plans up within 2-5 kills around the Mana forge jusr West of Area 52.
peaglemancer Mar 27th 2008 1:00PM
Oh believe me, I know which Elves have the plans. I have killed all variety of Sunfury Elves from Magisters, Geologists, Bowmen and Babysitters. However, clearly they are eating them shortly before death, or perhaps hiding them in some darkened orriface even Illidan refuses to explore.
Sakerin Mar 27th 2008 1:30PM
This may be due to way that loot is generated in WoW. When the mob spawns it's loot has already been determined, so it would be possible for you to get really unlucky and keep getting the ones that don't have the plans.
Khanmora Mar 27th 2008 1:41PM
My rogue got the plans on the 2nd belf she killed, the paladin however was AOE pulling for about an hour in the same area before she got hers :( The gathering residue was also a major pita for the pally since I don't have her epic mount yet.
I also find it strange that my chanter/tailor can't do that quest at all since she has no gathering skill. At least with netherwing they give you a kill quest to help with that and make the ore and herb non-soulbound so you can still turn them in if you get them with another character.
Dakira Mar 27th 2008 11:19AM
I share you fear that the island might be unlocked to quickly and loose its epic feel.
I'm going to head over to the suggestion forums and write an exceedingly long and complicated post about how I think this can be resolved.
The general gist of it will be that the island should be able to fight back and if the sever doesn't complete enough daily quests they should loose "%" and have to re-earn it.
I'll link to the post once I write it.
infection Mar 27th 2008 2:33PM
Yeah, im sure they'll hot fix that for you really quick.
Dakira Mar 27th 2008 5:45PM
Okay...
Well I doubt it will be a hotfix... but I posted it in the suggestion forum!

Let me know if it makes sense!

Love the new dailies - for Phase 1, after I complete the Sunwell Isle dailies, I head to Shattrath and do a big loop.
West from Shatt to Nagrand for multiphase.
North to BEM to mine for residue
Northeast to Netherstorm to get the plans
South to Hellfire Peninsula to finish off those 2 dailies
All in all, the big loop has taken me on average an hour, maybe 1.5 to complete 5 dailies with some very lucrative rewards...
Green Armadillo Mar 27th 2008 11:42AM
Yeah, a good route is key, and I'm thinking that the Hellfire Netherstorm jump is the best way to get good milage out of the Hellfire quests. Phase 2 adds the teleporter quest in Blade's Edge, and one of the later phases adds a quest in the hills between Shattrath and Hellfire, which would round out the loop even more. Honestly, my main issue is going to be learning to say no to the other dailies en route (e.g. the Ogr'ila and Skyguard ones in BE). That 45 minute, five quest loop suddenly becomes a two hour, 15 quest loop if you stop to bomb/loot/wrangle/kill too many of the roses. ;)
P.S. Where the residue is concerned, my best advice would be to keep the quest in your log and complete it on your own pace. Kinda like the Netherwing Crystals (which just got a bit easier this patch), the fact that it's a daily quest doesn't mean you actually need to complete it each day.
Ouka Mar 27th 2008 3:38PM
All the new dailys that they added really helped with getting gold ......over 100g per 10 quests .... and all the dailys are really easy... so far i love the new quests
Clasifyd Mar 27th 2008 11:35AM
Is it safe to assume that phases 2, 3, and 4 are going to increase in length? It would only make sense, after all. I think we'll see a rather sharp decline in activity once phase 3 hits, since that's when the portal, armorer, and badge loot vendor appear. To that effect, what's phase 4 going to bring? I never did the PTR so I don't really know...
Arabelli Mar 27th 2008 11:46AM
My server got to phase two in a day, but as of me passing out last night we'd only unlocked 4% of phase two. I think it's definately going to be a 'bigger as it goes along' deal.
Green Armadillo Mar 27th 2008 11:50AM
Yeah, the later phases took significantly longer than the early phases on the PTR. I think part of it is they want to get the all-important portal up in Shattrath sooner rather than later, in order to encourage people to go to the Isle. If I recall, both the anvil and the jewelcrafting vendor (phase 4?) took a long time to finish on the PTR.
