Report Card: Phase 2 daily quests
So, now that phase 1 of the Shattered Sun Offensive is over on many servers, phase 2 is in full swing. Phase 2 is a little bit smaller than phase 1, but you can still do all the phase 1 quests just fine, so it's more of a question of deciding how many you want to fit into your daily rotation. So what about the phase 2 quests? Progression needs aside, are they worth doing?
The Battle for the Sun's Reach Armory is the first quest I do almost every time I head out to the Isle of Quel'danas. This is actually a pretty short, sweet, and easy quest to do. Once you step out the front door of the Sanctum, the demons are almost immediately right there for the taking, both in the building across the street and in the Dawning Square below (Incidentally, I am about to make a "/1 Dawning Square is just south of the Sanctum, where you did the Missing Magistrix quest" macro now with how often the question is asked). They also spawn rather fast. Generally, even with the square being relatively crowded, I could find a new demon to kill almost as soon as I looted my last one. As for the Emissary of Hate, he spawned pretty quickly, and I like that his corpse is open to anyone to plant a banner. It means no waiting around being 20th in line to kill him or something. This is a short and sweet quest that'd should only take you about 5 minutes to do, tops, as long as the demons aren't overcamped.
The other main phase 2 quest takes a bit more work. Distraction at the Dead Scar fulfills the seemingly obligatory bombing run daily for each new daily faction (perhaps we'll need to bomb Meat Wagons based around Icecrown Glacier for our WoTLK dailies?). The nice thing about is that you don't need to worry about Fel Cannons like in Blade's Edge Mountain or those damned Monstrous Kaliri like in Skettis. The not so nice thing is that it takes a bit of getting used to. So far, I have still needed at least 2 runs each time to get the needed demons. Part of that is the fact that so many people are doing the runs, so you're usually right behind another dude who's already killed everything. The other part is that you need to use the bombs twice on some types of demons, so you have to have your finger on your bomb hot key while you're straining to hit an Eredar Sorcerer as soon as it comes into sight and praying you can swing your camera around and hit him again before you fly out of range.
That said, It's still a bit better than doing the old bombing runs sans epic flight, and I think I'll probably get the hang of it after another run or two. Plus the feel of flying down the dead scar trench throwing down bombs left and right as the legion and the scourge swarm below you is... actually pretty epic. I wouldn't mind if Blizzard upped the spawn rate or lowered the HP on the Sorcerers or Pit Lords a bit more, otherwise it isn't bad. I may start skipping it when I'm lazy and it's no longer needed for the island's progression if only because of the frustration of getting those damned Eredar Sorcerers, but for now, it seems worth a run or two, at least until the novelty of dive-bombing Brutallus wears off (Seriously, chuck a bomb at him when you fly over, it's funny).
The last new quest (at least for now), Intercepting the Mana Cells, is actually sort of a retread of "Potential for Brain Damage = High" from Netherstorm. This time, you don't have to actually drink dead ethereals, which I am grateful for, but find a Phase Device. So far, I've pretty much always found it on my first or second ethereal kill, so the drop rate on the device seems to be pretty nice. I'm also pretty grateful that once you right click the device, the buff is permanent until you leave the area. No rushing to find the stuff you need in 15 seconds like in the aforementioned Netherstorm quest, and no dodging legions of ethereals, since the phased out buff makes you invisible to them. The needed mana cells are also hot pink in color and rather large, so you can't miss them very easily. The one real annoyance are the Phase Wyrms that guard the cells. They have rather large aggro radius and an annoying damage shield, but the consolation prize is that they seem to have a rather high chance to drop Motes of Mana. I also appreciate that the quest also gives you an excuse to cook up some Demon Broiled Surprise, farm some Ethereum Prison Keys, or participate in a Bash'ir Landing Raid.
So so far, I'm pretty impressed with the new Shattered Sun Offensive. There's some minor points that could use some work, and some quests that I may start neglecting a little bit once they're no longer needed for progression, but for the most part, Blizzard has introduced a nice batch of varied, engaging dailies that should keep us all busy until WotLK comes around. I'll definitely be checking out the upcoming phases and letting you know how it goes, so stay tuned to WoW Insider for all the latest Sunwell patch news and opinion.

Do the bombing quest as a group and do countdown so you all start on top of each other, it makes it a lot easier.

That is the worst idea. Ever. Please quit Wow.

There really needs to be more Eredar Sorcerers in easier-to-reach locations. Even if there isn't anyone in front of (or behind) you, it's a royal pain to get all them done. I had to do the ride 4 times last night, even though I had done it a number of times on the PTR.

The point about the bombing runs being more friendly to players with non-epic flyers is a good one. It's always struck me as a bit weird that the best way to make money for your epic flyer.... is daily quests that are best done on an epic flyer. Once the portal from Shattrath actually opens, this area can be a bit of an equalizer since no one can zip around at 380% speed.
Intercepting the mana cells remains my least favorite daily of the patch because of mana cell ninjas. The only way for any other player to be fighting a mana wyrm is for them to be on this quest, so there can be absolutely no ambiguity that the person standing in combat on top of a mana cell needs it for their quest. That won't stop unscrupulous people from running in and looting the results of other peoples' hard work, which is especially frustrating when you're a low DPS class/spec and can just tell that someone is going to come loot your mana cell before you win the fight. Add in the random odds of the phase device taking a while to drop and I won't do this quest on my pally anymore, even though that's the character I really want the badges for.

See, this is what bubble is for... I've heard amusing stories to this effect, something along the lines of a warrior tagging lots of mobs and dragging them to an AoEing prot pally *evil grin*. I assume you can loot while immune, if not, at least they can't.

I've need two runs each time as well. Unfortunately its because the sorc's keep evading. Other than that bug I REALLY like this quest.

The Dead Scar bombing run is great fun. Nice, short cooldown on the bomb. The only annoying part is the long, slow ride to the scar. If they could speed that up, needing to make two passes wouldn't be half bad.
Intercepting the Mana Cells, wow. It's almost as if the invisibility mode makes people think they can be extra rude. Though with WoW's continued popularity I'm seeing more general rudeness and immaturity in-game anyway. When I'm on my druid, I do this quest with my pally friend and we take turns fighting wyrms or grabbing cells. We do not take cells from people who are fighting near them, and it still gets done quickly (amazing!). Warlocks and hunters have a distinct advantage here.

i completely agree... something about being phased seems to turn everyone into a jerk. i can go a whole day up until that quest unmolested, but there's always one gnome warlock phased at the same time as me who has to start something.

As long as we're on the subject of people ninjaing mana cells while you're fighting wyrms, here's my tip for all you druids out there: The Wyrms are rootable. So if you're afraid someone will grab your cell, Root them, grab the cell, the finish them off.

The bombing quest is terrable a waste of time it took me 4 runs earlier. At times mobs i killed were not credited as kills so i had to fly around again. Not doing this quest anymore complete waste.

My strategy for the mana cells:
Stake out an area where two cells spawn near each other and don't leave it.
The cells spawn faster than the wyrms do, so you can afford to let someone steal one or two cubes while you're clearing out the wyrm. Once they get their cube and leave, you stay there and wait for the cubes to reappear.
People will run by and see that you're standing right where a cube should be and don't bother getting near you.
The wyrms spawn on a different timer from the cubes, so you should be able to dispatch the respawns between a cube respawn.
I find places with two cubes near each other, and clean this quest up rather quickly. It's much less frustrating than running around people trying to beat them to the cubes.

I'd just like to give my two cents that some of the Dailies are a disaster.
There have to be SOME mobs in these zones that don't have regular Quests tied to them.
Trying to level up to 70 doing regular quests can get pretty frustrating nowadays.
You fight your way to a mob spawn to get 8 of a mob for a Quest but as you reach the spot you watch 70 after 70 fly in and grab them all, running around having a grand old time.
I was so excited to have Friday off thinking maybe the slow server time I'd have more luck but no dice.
Perhaps they can throw some level 70 mobs in empty spots of old Azeroth for these Dailies?

Interupting the Mana Cells is an awful awful awful quest.
You've been lucky (or ive been unlucky) I'm ussualy around 10-15 kills each time ive done it so far (8 times, 4 days/2chars). But the worse part, is that if you die you lose the buff, and the item that gives you the buff, so you gotta farm that thing all over again!
This is a serious serious pain on PvP servers. A few days ago i had to farm 3 of those items just to complete the quest!
Of course, I finally got my +40 dmg to wep enchant in the process, so its not that bad i guess =D.

the biggest problem i have is that thurs fri and mon mornings when I've done it there's been some horrible lag and I've gotten stuck with an evading or invisible mana worm beating on me only to find myself dead 4 minutes later. I've taken to soulstoning myself though many of you don't have this option and running with my voidwalker who can atleast hold the aggro though I rarely use him and usually rely on the imp. It's true locks have an advantage here but that being said, it's not like I haven't been fighting three worms standing over a mana cell and had it ninjaed. I don't do the same but it happens.
One other things i've noticed regarding rudeness among players is how people just don't understand that in the chaos accidents happen. I got cussed out good and proper at the throne of kil'jaeden b/c I saw a free felblood elite and dotted it, it takes 3 seconds for a dot to even tag a mob so I usually lead of with an instant but there were plenty around. Well, then I realize there was a gnome warrior siphoning it , oh noes. Well, needless to say I was subjected to a huge tirade and he wouldn't believe me. Tag things before you waste a siphon, these elites don't hit that hard anyway and be understanding if someone tags your mob. I have plenty of mobs where I place a dot and then watch someone else get it anyway and I just move on. If I really was in that big of a hurry or wanted to be that competitive I'd instacast them all and act like I was on the elemental plateau banishing my next target, tagging a 3rd and fearing it while I drain tanked one but the spawns are fast and a few seconds to find a new one isn't going to kill anyone. After all the furor dies down I'm sure there will be plenty of mobs for everyone to finish quickly.

1: Get on flying mount
2: Agro lots of mana wyrms while on ground
3: Train wyrms to said ninja
4: Take off
5: Laugh
