I've taken a class in the history of fashion (heterosexual male looking for a college requirement here!) and one thing I learned was that men and women regularly fluctuate between being the "Peacock" in terms of sexual role/attraction.Today, women are frilly and thin and dress up for men as the fashionable stereotype goes. But there have been times when plump or muscular, practical women were preferred while men were to be emaciated, immaculate groomed, wear make up, wigs and frills and lace to impress women. This idea has the advantage of being politically correct to make fun of in today's society and I don't think it's a slight against homosexuality at all -- although some highly effeminate homosexuals (and heterosexuals) will be made fun of it. On one hand, it's "incorrect" for a man to act "girly" from a conservative standpoint. However, from a progressive standpoint, it's also wrong because it speaks to a form of inequality where men rely on women to do their heavy lifting for them, thus not being gender equitable. Most gay men *I* know are not only not terribly effeminate but most of them make fun of men who are, straight or gay. A number of prominent gay comedy acts very actively make fun of (and distance homosexuality from) the efete, metrosexual male stereotype and often, invoking gender humor, make fun of men who are frilly and make MERCILESS fun of transvestites. In fact, most transvestites are straight. Straight men are often more likely to be effeminate in more aspects of their lives. Some studies indicate that gay men tend to have higher testosterone, more masculine features -- shown by finger lengths and are naturally hairier. The current thought is that homosexuals of both genders are hyper masculine biologically and that any feminine traits are more sociological. In this case, I think it's a case of Blizzard playing with the idea of Horde not only getting a PRETTY race but getting the PRETTIEST race (including pretty men). Also, it's a play on the stereotypical androgynous depictions of elves and nymphs AND a sort of twisted reflection on the Night Elves' matriarchal warrior women who run society and their laid back hippie dudes to make the blood elves a society of fierce, aristocratic women with flamboyant men who'd never dream of chipping a nail.B'Elf males may face the same attacks as gay males and some of the unwashed masses may confuse them. The difference is that gay men like sex with men (the only real, defining characteristic) whereas Blood Elf males are more like a bunch of frilly eyebrow-plucking Victorian aristocrats who believe that men are supposed to be better groomed, prettier and less hands on or likely to get dirty than women are.
