I think your friend and a lot of others waited so long to make a male character because, in my opinion, none of the male models were all that good to look at before the Blood Elves came around. The men are all absurdly muscular, while the females of almost every race are cute/pretty. Blood Elves looked more like your friend because they ironically look the most human of all the races.
