Build Shop: Paladin 5/8/41 + 7

Every Tuesday, Chris Jahosky contributes Build Shop, which takes a look into one of the many talent specs available to players.
Welcome back to the wonderful world of Build Shop! I've got a lot to say this week, since this is a spec that is near and dear to my heart (even though my Paladin is Protection spec these days) -- Retribution. I've tried to strip it down to the essentials (or what I think is the essentials) so that you can shift points around depending on what you want to do with it.
Holy (5 points)
- Divine Strength (5/5) - Increases total strength by 10%. This is really the only talent worth taking in the Holy tree for this build. This talent allows you to stack strength with better returns than stacking attack power.
- Redoubt (5/5) - Damaging melee and ranged attacks against you have a 10% chance to grant you an increased 30% chance to block for 10 seconds (or 5 blocks, whichever comes first). In the off chance that you ever pick up a shield with this build, this will be more useful for tanking than Improved Devotion Aura.
- Precision (3/3) - Increases your chance to hit with attacks and spells by 3%. This talent is the reason to spec into this tree. Whether you'rePvPing or raiding, this talent has a use -- it's 3% less hit rating you need on your gear, allowing you greater flexibility with your enchants and gems.
- Improved Blessing of Might (5/5) - Increases the attack power bonus of Blessing of Might by 20%. A pretty solid talent that increases your buffing power -- a definite plus for groups.
- Improved Judgement (2/2) - Decreases the cooldown on your Judgement by 2 seconds. Being able to use Judgement more often means more damage in less time, so this can be a definite DPS increase if you're using the max rank of your damaging seals.
- Improved Seal of the Crusader (3/3) - Causes your Judgement of the Crusader spell to increase the crit chance of all attacks made against the target by 3%. Another DPS increase, this one effects your group / raid as well as you.
- Seal of Command (1/1) - Gives a chance to inflict 70% of your weapon's normal damage as Holy damage. This seal procs at a rate of 7ppm (procs per minute). As such, slower, high damage range weapons tend to see better returns with this seal. If you're Alliance, this is really your only damage dealing option if you're Retribution spec. Horde paladins should use Seal of Blood for PvE encounters, but both factions should probably useSoC for PvP for the burst potential.
- Conviction (5/5) - Increases your chance to crit by 5%. Almost every talent tree in the game has a talent like this. If you're going to be dealing damage, don't pass it up. A higher crit rate means more Vengeanceup time, and that means more damage dealt.
- Vindication (1/3) - Gives your damaging attacks a chance to decrease all of the target's stats by x%. This is a filler point, needed to advance further in the tree. There are other options available (Pursuit of Justice is handy if you like to PvP), but it's probably best to place this in whatever talent you think will be the most useful. You'll have 7 points left over with this spec, so start thinking now about what you might want (I list my suggestions further down).
- Crusade (3/3) - Increases damage caused to Humans, Demons, Undead and Elementals by 3%. Not bad -- a 3% damage increase to 4 of the 7 enemy groups, and also applies to PvP combatants.
- Two Handed Weapon Specialization (3/3) - Increases damage done with two handed weapons by 6%. A solid boost to your DPS output -- every bit helps, so don't pass this up.
- Sanctity Aura (1/1) - Increases Holy damage by 10%. Sadly, the effects of this [non-improved] aura are only really useful to you (or maybe another Ret paladin, if you're grouped). This will boost the damage of your SoC, and because we're about to grab the improved version, should be the aura you use most of the time.
- Improved Sanctity Aura (2/2) - The amount of damage caused by targets affected with Sanctity Aura is increased by 2%. This is a nice little group buff that also increases your own damage (it all adds up -- if we're fighting humans with a 2h weapon right now, we'd get a 11% damage bonus).
- Vengeance (5/5) - Grants a 5% Physical / Holy damage bonus for 30 seconds after you land a crit. This stacks up to 3 times for a total of 15%, which is most definitely a great buff. Don't skip this one! Having a decent crit rate will allow you to keep this fully stacked (assuming the fight lasts long enough).
- Sanctified Seals (3/3) - Increases your chance to crit with attacks and spells by 3% and reduces the chance your seals will be dispelled by 100%. Aside from the nice crit boost, this is a useful talent for PvP, since it keeps your seals from being removed by those purge-happy Shaman.
- Repentance (1/1) - Puts your enemy to sleep for 6 seconds. This has a minute cooldown and will break on damage, but can be used from range and is a prerequisite to Fanaticism, another essential talent.
- Fanaticism (5/5) - Increases the crit chance of all Judgements capable of a crit by 15%. In addition, it will also reduce your threat by 30% (unless you have Righteous Fury on), making it great for PvE fights where pulling aggro is a concern.
- Crusader Strike (1/1) - An instant attack that causes 110% weapon damage and refreshes all Judgements on the target. This is the first and only instant weapon attack available to paladins at the moment, so don't pass it up. Aside from increasing your DPS by giving you a new source of damage, Crusader Strike gives you something to do other than auto-attack in a fight, allowing you a greater degree of control over when you cause damage.
So, that leaves us with 7 points. You can put these anywhere you like, but here are some of the talents I like (and why):
- Sanctified Judgement (3/3) - Gives your Judgement a 100% chance to return 80% of the mana cost of the Judged Seal. This makes for some incredible mana efficiency, which is a good thing since as a Retribution Paladin, your mana pool will be quite small.
- Pursuit of Justice (3/3) - Increases your movement and mounted speed by 15%, and decreases the chance you'll be hit with spells by 3%. A very nice talent for PvP, since foot speed is something that paladins really lack. It also provides some protection against spellcasters by decreasing their chance to hit.
- Vindication (3/3) - This is mostly useless in raids and other PvE encounters because many mobs are immune, but it does work against players so is worthwhile for PvP.
That wraps up this edition of Build Shop, but I'll be back again next week. What do you want to see on Build Shop? Send me an email with your questions, comments, or builds and we'll talk shop.

wow, I was going to comment, but there are so many terrible comments here, I don't want to get lost in the madness.
argh, I can't help myself
Chris, nice job - 1/3 vind is the way to go, and with your extra 7, 3 Seals and 4 Benediction without a doubt.
And yea BoM is only 44 ap, but that's 44ap each for -
Ret Pally, Hunters, Rogues, Warriors, Shamens, and Druids
Pally's bless, it's our cc

It's 5 points a Ret Paladin simply cannot spare.
Holy Build however, are easily doable with 5/5 Imp Might and no points in Imp Wisdom.
Besides, Blessing of Kings, which increases your Strength and therefore AP, is more of a DPS increase, and if you spec for Precision it's 3 talents poitns rather than 5 for Imp Might.
Don't spec Imp might. It's not ever worth it, you need the mana effcientcy of Benediction more.

Hey Xonate, Please do all pallies a favor and Delete your paladin. You are the kinda of retadin that gives all retadins a bad name. Learn how to do math aswell and not leave factors out of the equation.

Well i played a ret paladin for nearly 3 years and never put shit into hit rating, and when i want to hit something i never have a problem. SO precision = lame.

1. I always stick with redoubt. Imp devo aura simply worths nothing, though I meet many random tanks for heroics, who demand switching to it. This is the point usually where I explain that 2% damage for everyone and 10% extra holy to me is a blast compared to 1k armor for one person who has 15-20k anyway, so its nothing more then 1% damage reduction. If a tank ever misses it, he should just get better gear.
Meanwhile redoubt comes handy many times, for example, if you run Magister's terrace. With a decent prot gear in your bags, you can easily aoe tank those huge packs before the second boss, which is a nightmare for every warrior or druid.
2. 44Ap for every dps in the raid is much better then Benediction, as it does NOT synergize with Sanctified Judgement, and you have other methods to keep your mana up, chainpotting, ask the pala healer to use judgement of wisdom on boss..etc..
3. precision is good, allows you to change your gear constantly and not stick with the +hit ones.
"SO precision = lame." : with every miss on autoattack you're not only missing one attack, but a seal of blood too, so not going for being hit capped, and some expertise, is the pretty lame thing IMO...

it should be pointed out that its not just "10% more damage for me" with sanctity aura...if you happen to be running with a prot pally alongside you it becomes "10% more damage for me and the tank....good luck trying to pull anything off of that, oh and we all get 2% overall"
while on my prot pally i found running stuff alongside a ret pally quite appealling...at least in pve
as to the controversy over redoubt and imp. devo
they both suck, personally i went with imp. devo only because i could see myself using that more than tanking (redoubt is a joke anyway...) PoJ is great, both for movement and that % to avoid spells
Brasson Apr 2nd 2008 10:29AM
Could also take those last seven points into Prot for Kings. That'd let you shuffle the points from Improved Might over to Benediction, and you should still have four to play around with.

Precision is a fantastic talent, i think anyone who says otherwise is sorely missing out on alot of dps, you are straight upping your "to-hit" 3 percent, thats not hit rating, it can't be changed. Sure if you are in a kara guild you might not notice, but you're dps will improve and you go on to any 25 man or even ZA you're whole raid is going to suffer.
As far as benediction, I like it and improved might, might is kind of an issue for 5 mans as most people are going to want you to use sanc, same for rogues, and maybe feral dps. I would pick it up if I was raiding though, particularly in a paladin heavy raid so while everyone is yelling out "ZOMG GIMME KINGS" you can give them improved might on the off buff.

Chris,
How exactly are you playing with this spec? Are you trying to PvP or PvE with it? I need to know more about its intendend use before I can critically analyze it.
p-diddy Apr 2nd 2008 10:46AM
First, let me say I love these articles because the comments they invariably generate illustrate the many different play styles there are AND, because people have a reason for their build, there tends to be a really good discussion on game mechanics behind each skill. So thanks for writing the article - keep 'em coming.
Since everyone has an opinion, can someone weigh in on
Fanaticism? I just don't see it being all that useful - yes, it ups your potential for judgment crit by 15%, but it seems like the points could be spent better elsewhere, doesn't it? Do people always use the highest level Seal of Command or do they run the low one to just get the 70% weapon proc and ignore the judgment?
I guess what's sort of funny is that there are certain things that are great when you solo but are, IMHO, worthless for grouping, e.g., sanctity aura. There are also group-friendly skills that aren't all that great when you solo, e.g., blessing of might - i mean, it's helpful, but it's not an IWIN button.
Here's my take on the improved blessing of might v. benediction. I took BoM early on and it was great - didn't really have any mana problems so I never understood why benediction was everyone's favorite. Well, as a lvl 63 ret pally with a random point in benediction that is ALWAYS running out of mana, I am wondering if maybe it really is the best way to go. I've even been running blessing of wisdom to try and slow the mana drain but to no avail.
I think sanctified judgments is a must. I occasionally
sword-and-shield it so maybe I'd do redoubt to get precision.
But my build sucks, so what do I know?
darian Apr 2nd 2008 1:48PM
The reason for taking Fanaticism isn't the crit, it's the -30% threat. Retribution Paladins without it will hit the threat ceiling very, very easily, as they don't have the passive threat reductions that Warriors, Rogues, and Druids sport.
Improved Blessing of Might isn't bad, it's just that Benediction is so much better. In 5-10 mans you may not get to use BoM if you're the only Paladin, or one of two. In 25 mans there's a stronger case for the extra AP.
p-diddy Apr 2nd 2008 1:57PM
ahhhhhhh thanks. I don't raid much and when I do 5 mans, I've always just figured that if I do pull aggro, it's better than a clothie taking it. As a pally I tend to have the highest or second highest stam/armor in a 5 man, so it's not a big deal if I pull aggro (yet - again I'm not taking on C'thun here). Thanks for clearing it up.

Xonate needs to delete his character, cuz damn dude you do not know how to play a paladin at all.

I BG PvP a lot (just started Arenas) and raid casually (Kara). Improved BoM beats the alternative because of the reverse synergy with Sanctified Judgement. I spec 5/0/56, Armory me if you like under Dezrael. Every single point spent in that build has utility for PvP. Getting Precision, which I could get through gear and gems anyway, at the cost of 5 talent points in Redoubt or worse yet, extra points of armor (a diminishing returns stat) that I will rarely if ever use either in a raid or PvP, just makes no sense to me.
