Nihilum apologizes...
After reading an announcement on the evening of March 31st, 2008 declaring that Nihilum, whom we recently interviewed, would be quitting the World of Warcraft forever, WoW Insider received quite a lot of mail surrounding the issue. Was it true, or simply another April Fools joke?
They even began disbanding their guild and joining others, and spoke of a plan to reappear together, perhaps in other games. There was an outpouring of love and concern from the community at large, and unlike the reaction to other jokes on April 1st, everyone was at leastweary (ahem) wary that this one was not a joke.
Nihilum cited several reasons for their departure, including dissatisfaction with Blizzard's designs and methods, and an overall trend towards casual play while depleting much of the rewards, incentive and challenge for hardcore guilds, including changes made in patch 2.4.
At 12:01 a.m. on April 2nd, 2008, Nihilum confirmed that they were indeed yanking our chains, and even made a cheerful April Fools video. To quote, "Sorry for the scare everyone!" with a keen happy face at the end. We love you Nihilum!

There was an outpouring of concern? Wow... just... wow, if it really bothers someone that a guild they're not even in disbands... take a break from the game for a day or two, seriously.
I'm a hardcore nerd, but damn.
White_sabbat Apr 2nd 2008 6:28AM
YOHOOOOOOOO
GO HOME NERDS
(and get a life fGs)
Saiforune Apr 2nd 2008 7:28AM
Seriously, I REALLY have to agree to him. This is just plain fanboyism, not nerdom. I'm a nerd ,but god damn fanboy/girl much? Anyone who spazzed and didn't know this was OBVIOUSLY April fool's is an R-tard to begin with, AND anyone who actually cared...WOW... take a break from WoW and get a life.

Out pour of concern? I could give a rats bee-hind if they break up over Blizzard catering to causal play. In fact Blizzard rewards causal play with double xp, easy instances for those welfare epics, and more gold.
Any REAL gamer would not quit over game improvements.

Regardless of what you guys think, Nihilum does have a very large user-base on it's site, it's own community that rivals if not exceeds the size of this one, and a huge number of people that do in fact care what they say.
WoW's playerbase is so large that it's easy to claim that 'nobody cares' and even find tons of people that indeed, do not care. However, you will also find, if you look, tons of people that do. Do not deign to speak for everyone. For many, Nihilum are figureheads, and to deny their opinion has weight within the community at large is foolish. People do give a damn what they have to say, which is why we get a huge upsurge in traffic everytime we interview them.
You may not care, but trust me, there are plenty that do, and no amount of tit-for-tat mudslinging is going to change that.

It really baffles me some of the hatred that is directed towards Nihilum, and even more astounding is the people that apparently "don't care" about Nihilum yet feel the need to post on an internet blog about the subject.
Their members have chosen something that they obviously love doing and get a lot of enjoyment out of and have decided to be number one.
I have a lot of respect for anyone who has a passion for something and strives to be the best that they can possibly be, and I think a lot of people think the same as me which is why a lot of people like Nihilum. The "it's just a computer game lol, get a life rofl" argument is really quite weak.
And to the poster above, I'm not a hardcore nerd in any sense (and to be honest I don't think that's at all relevant) but I still admire anyone who reaches the top of their chosen walk in life.

I do think lots of the hate for Nihilum stems from their announcement that they reject female applicants. That left a very sour taste in many mouthes and lost them a lot of respect.

The thing I hate about Nihilum is the fuss about them. You can basically give them a chair and a table, sit them down in a mall to sign autographs and blogs like these will scream it's the greatest thing in the history of this world.
I mean, come on. If there's one game that is NOT based on skill it's World of Warcraft. Everything just comes down to putting a real shitload of time into it. Sure, I respect people that love this game so much they're dedicating their life to it, but it's not like they're super-talented rockstars or something...
The way this article is written it's almost like people commited suicide because these guys decided to try some other game for a change...
Pzychotix Apr 2nd 2008 3:39AM
Yeaaaah no. The female applicant thing was a joke. Get over it.
Tenchan Apr 2nd 2008 7:23AM
*shrug* I only offered a possible answer of many to Ste's question. It's called dialog.
anonymoose Apr 2nd 2008 10:37AM
Ste, you essentially hit the nail on the head. If people don't care about Nihilum so much, why all the flaming? Yeah, a little closeted jealousy.
I also think the flaming of hardcores is beyond ridiculous.
Rich Apr 2nd 2008 2:46AM
Wow
anyone who took that seriously need to really re-evaluate their priorities. Had it come down any other time of the year, I might have taken it serious and been "okxthanxbai". But the timing was everything.
computermachina Apr 2nd 2008 3:29AM
someone care to fill me in what makes these guys special?
Solaris Apr 2nd 2008 10:26AM
Have bigger e-peens than most wow nerds?
klink-o Apr 2nd 2008 3:42AM
They play a game, like, a lot, and enjoy doing so. That's about it.

Naix Apr 2nd 2008 11:55AM
Cause they play a game...wait we all play this game.
Cause they have a guild...wait there is millions of guilds.
Cause they raid well together...wait there are plenty of guilds/pugs that raid well together..
Cause they have so many members they can hand pick the raid....ahh thats it!
Pzychotix Apr 2nd 2008 3:41AM
@Thyz:
PVE isn't a joke when you don't have strats handed to you on a silver platter.
Rich Apr 2nd 2008 3:46AM
The have GM's kill bosses for them, why wouldn't they be told the strat on how to deal with the boss? I am sure they don't walk into the PTR with no information at all...
Pzychotix Apr 2nd 2008 6:07AM
And what makes you think they do any of this? They don't have information handed to them by Blizz, unless you know something that we don't. They don't have GMs hand them kills, unless you know some sort of insider deal going on.
If that's the case, source?
