Addon Spotlight: AuldLangSyne
You've got friends, or at least you tell people you do. In fact, through your days of rolling PUG's, random premades and adding that Resto Shaman who saved your behind in STV, you've got a long list of friends. If you're anything like me, it can be weeks before one of your randomly added friends checks in with you, giving you plenty of time to forget why they were your friend in the first place.
Enter AuldLangSyne, an addon that combines the functionality of CT_PlayerNotes and FriendsFacts. I have also been able to replace Fubar_GuildFu and Fubar_FriendsFu with this one, so it has come in quite handy. Let me just take a second to show my deep appreciation for developer's who add Fubar or Titan Panel embeds to their addons.
So then, what can this addon do for you? Keep reading to find out about the features AuldLangSyne provides.
This addon allows you to create and store notes for each of your friends. This includes different notes for friends with the same name on different servers. It also remembers information about your friends once it has seen them online. Once information has been collected, AuldLangSyne will display their name, level, class, guild and how long since they were last seen online. (Granted, Patch 2.4 added some of this functionality, you nay-sayers keep on reading for more features not added to the default UI.)
Names are also colored by class, in case you needed another way to be reminded that your brother plays a Warrior. Notes can be toggled to show when your friends log in, keeping you from wondering who that person is and why you're being told that they're logging in.
To access the options for AuldLangSyne, use the command
For those of you using Fubar, you also have a plugin that provides much of the same information in a guild/friends pane. You can also right click the AuldLangSyne icon or text to open an options pane, which will allow you to forego using the /auld commands.
My favorite part of this addon is the Fubar pane that displays the information I use most. A quick glance a my Fubar tells me how many of my guildmates and friends are online. Hovering my cursor over the Fubar plugin opens a pane that displays not only who is on, but their location and notes as well. You can open the Friends panel, Guild Panel, whisper to one of them or invite them to your group all from here. I can also read my guild's lame Message of the Day from here, which may one day show some dates for Karazhan. (A bunch of students at my University rerolled together on Archimonde in December, we're all hitting 70 now and can be epic all over again. Pray for our Kara success.) Unfortunately the lame MotD is my fault.
Regardless of my life story, this addon has replaced at least three that I previously used, so I'll give it my endorsement for the sake of efficiency if nothing else. I love its functionality and only wish it had a built-in Kill-on-sight manager as well, because I'm vengeful and petty. Try this one out if you're on the market for a way to increase the efficiency of your friends and/or guild tracking. If not, go make some friends and give the whole teamwork thing a go. Dismissed!

"This addon allows you to create and store notes for each of your friends"
So does the default UI.
Lionhearte Apr 6th 2008 4:09PM
This is already in the game as of patch 2.4...

this was a recent addition to the default UI.
also, it's got a whole lot more functionality than just that. :)

They added it because of addons like this one, but as is the case with almost all other addons that have had their functionality rolled into the default client, the original addon job better or has other functionality that is not reflected in the client. In this case, AuldLangSyne lets you format the data however you want, which I find extremely useful. I like to track my friends' guilds, level, class, zone, status, and I like to have things colorized as well based on some of those stats, as well as some trivial ones like character gender and whatnot.
The notes that the client lets you take now are nice and all, but they're just one small feature that makes up AuldLangSyne. It's not going away because of patch 2.4, just like Scrolling Combat Text didn't go away when they added it to the client.

Sounds like a complete waste of memory, honestly.

the only issue i have with this addon (that i have used for quite a while now) is that it seems to screw up the Ignore page. (although, it could just be an older version, this addon combined with another addon, or something else i may have overlooked.)

Another excellent addon that I have been using for quite some time now. If you're not already using addons to track guildmembers and friends then this one wont change your mind, but if you value both simplicity and power then this could be the one you need to track the people that you play with.

IMO, if you can't remember why they're your friend, maybe they shouldn't be -_-
naranjar Apr 6th 2008 12:46AM
some of us have crappy short-term memories and have difficulty committing things to long-term memory. also, character names can be totally off-the-wall and you can't remember if it was spelled this way or that way.
a small note can instantly remind you of who they are. :D

This addon only really shines when you're using it with fuBar, which the blogger's screenshot is not showing.
In fuBar, a mouse over its spot on you bar and your list of presently online friends and guildies comes down showing what data you wish to display for them - the two lists are separated, and in between them is your guild's Message of the day.
As a guild leader, this gives me a pull down with everyone's guild and officer note, and the notes it makes on the friends list is something I use to record people who have applied on our website, so that when I log in I can mouse up there and if one of them is on see what I wrote myself about their application and then start up a chat.
- Even more handy, it syncs my friend and ignore lists across all my toons on the server, so I can see that info on any of my alts.

Er, I need to learn to read... :)
The blogger's second screenshot is indeed showing what it looks like in fuBar...

The only thing I'd really want from a friends addon is the ability to merge friend lists across alts. It's a right pain having to manually add the same list of friends for each alt I create and inevitably each alt ends up having a slightly different list of friends.
As far as I can see AuldLangSyne doesn't seem to do that... anyone know one that does?
Asmeroth Apr 6th 2008 5:13AM
This addon seems to have a sync option. Not tested it myself yet.
Rich Apr 6th 2008 5:36AM
Freindshare does it. been using it for awhile now...

This addon does it, I love this feature a LOT. I have a lot of different alts, and having a sync'd friends list is FTW!
Traxter Apr 6th 2008 7:23AM
doesn't really seem too needed tbh, before patch 2.4 I was looking for an addon like this as I had a problem forgetting who people were but now it's already in the game.
Archaic Apr 6th 2008 7:46AM
I used this addon for about 2 months before switching back to Fubar_GuildFu and Fubar_FriendsFu. I find the CPU usage of this addon to be unacceptably high for anything but grinding, and I don't want to have to change addons when I suddenly get an instance invite, or go do some BG's.
Elroir Apr 6th 2008 8:22AM
it's really a nice addon; I also use it for months now. Especially the full colorization of the guildpanel is pretty good.
