They added it because of addons like this one, but as is the case with almost all other addons that have had their functionality rolled into the default client, the original addon job better or has other functionality that is not reflected in the client. In this case, AuldLangSyne lets you format the data however you want, which I find extremely useful. I like to track my friends' guilds, level, class, zone, status, and I like to have things colorized as well based on some of those stats, as well as some trivial ones like character gender and whatnot.The notes that the client lets you take now are nice and all, but they're just one small feature that makes up AuldLangSyne. It's not going away because of patch 2.4, just like Scrolling Combat Text didn't go away when they added it to the client.
