Fishing your way to profit

The Bag of Fishing Treasures contains roughly over 7 Gold in cash in addition to rare items such as The 2 Ring, which can sell for a whopping 2,000 Gold on some servers. It can also contain the bind-on-equip Eye of the Sea, which can sell for 400 Gold. Even if you don't have the kind of luck to chance on such rare items, however, it's quite common to pick up insanely expensive gray items such as the Mithril Shaving Razor, which sells for 11 Gold; a Silver Statuette, which sells for 15 Gold; a Beautiful Glass Eye, which goes for 18 Gold; and the mother of all gray items, the Ancient Coin, which goes for a massive 25 Gold.
The white items aren't so bad, either, and are actually collector's items that seem to be aimed at bank toons typically dressed in tuxedo sets. I mean, who wouldn't want a Noble's Monocle? If it doesn't sell on the trade channel or the AH, vendors will take it for a little over 11 Gold. The Ornate Drinking Stein and Antique Silver Cufflinks also sell for 11 Gold while the Gold Wedding Band is a nice 15 Gold item. Some players actually want those items for bank alts or Role-playing marriages. Of course, aside from the nice exclusive gray or white items, there's also a good chance players will get Motes of Water or Elixirs of Water Walking. Even if you won't necessarily want to sell them to vendors, the various baby crocolisk pets are also a nice fishing perk. Although fishing takes a bit of patience (to be honest, it bores the living crud out of me), the Gold that fishing now promises might be enough to encourage some players to take up the skill.

I don't know if I'm pleased or disappointed by the new fishing incentives. I'm glad that more people are taking up the rod and reel, as I've been a proponent of fishing since I started playing.
On the other hand, the more people fishing the waters of Outland, the less likely I am going to get people to spend 25G per stack of fishsticks.

pro tip: use the elixirs of water walking from the fishing daily to speed up the naga-killing daily on quel'danas.
when you can just trot around offshore, there's much less competition for mobs. :-)

Or just be a shaman.
Aaron Apr 7th 2008 6:27PM
How does that help? you'll sink into the water again when you're hit, or are you talking about some secret small island with more myrimidons? :p
Konchu Apr 7th 2008 7:07PM
Well as a shaman you can just recast the spell then jump back up on the top of the water of course a potion that doesn't break is not a bad thing to have either.

oh, i forgot that not everyone kills stuff from range. :-P sorry melee classes.
still good for hunters, warlocks, and mages though.

I need to step up my fisherman's work load. Haven't even touched the fishing daily. Instead, I fly him up to Skettis, fish until I have 2 stacks of crawdads, fly back down to the rivers for 2 stacks of golden fish, then back to Shattrath for some cooking.
Guess I have something new to do tonight!

I love fishing. I have two level 70 fisherwomen, so am having a blast and raking in the gold since the daily generally takes less than 5 minutes.

I particuarly like that one of the dailies can be completed by low level skill fishers - I'm using it as an excuse to level up a second fisher to 375.

I got a Shadow Pearl in one of my reward bags too; auctioning usually for 30-50g on my server.

Ancient Coin is a 'grey' item that can be obtained as a reward from the fishing daily - sells for 25g to a vendor.

I just got Muckbreath today..Imma very happy.
And the Ancient Coin? ZOMG, what a nice surprise that was. Getting a total of 31g from a single daily, and a single cast to boot! NIIICE!

I just got The 2 Ring a few days ago in my bag. Sold it for a nice 2,222g. ;)
Fishing was always the "hidden" profession. Everyone knows about it, but rarely does anyone have the patience to actually level it up to benefit from it.

Pre-2.4, the goldenscale vendorfish wasn't the best grey from fishing, I think http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34476 was.
Don Apr 8th 2008 7:11AM
Fishing was profitable before 2.4, I made enough gold for two epic mounts. All I did was fish in Azshara, for either dark claw lobster or raw might fish. A stack of 20 of either would easily sell for 20g on my server, there were a lot o lazy people who didn't want to level their fishing to level their cooking, so I made quite a bit of gold that way.
Now the fishing dailies are a huge plus, i feel that fishing has more of a purpose to me now, other than a money making profession.

I got the Gold Wedding Band (15g) along with the Eye of the Sea one day. Along with the gold that you get in the bag as well it turned out to be a nice fishing day :)
Wildbinx Apr 8th 2008 10:43AM
I've become my guild's sole high level figherman and cook. the benefits from these two "secondary" professions far outweigh my blacksmithing and are still better than mining (which is a pretty good profession to have still).

You've forgotten the best perk of Outland Fishing: Primal Waters.
I can literally fish about 4 primal waters in less time than a 10 minute lure on the Elemental Plateau. Primal Waters sell on my server for 25g standard, and I can easily bank 300 gold in a single day just from fishing at various times. Not to mention the new "Pure Water" animation makes it even easier to track the nodes.

Shhhh you're not supposed to give away our secret! ;)
I haven't fished since 2.4 implemented... but I really need to catch my most elusive critter [Oily blackmouth] for the ever important [Blackmouth Oil], which of course is used for PVP grounds in the [Free Action Potion]!
Haven't caught one damn purple fish yet! *sigh*
Wildbinx Apr 8th 2008 6:24PM
find the pools of those things and you can rake them in.
