He Said, She Said: Tauren Females

This week David Bowers and Amanda Dean take a look at what it takes to play a female Tauren. We all chose our characters for different reasons, potential class and racial abilities should be primary among them. Many people play only characters of their real-life gender, while others chose their character's gender based on appearance or role-playing needs. For whatever reasons, Tauren females are a vast minority. Amanda believes that in most cases it takes a real girl to roll one of these femmes, what do you think?
Read on for our discussion.
Amanda: Tauren are definitely my favorite race to play. I have no scientific evidence, but I believe that that it takes a real woman to play a female Tauren. Taurens are not eye-candy like other models. I find the models to be well balanced and about the only race that has female models that actually look like they could swing an axe.
I was kind of amused and slightly annoyed by Irrenicus of Azshara's (deleted) forum post that Tauren females should have larger breasts. I understand that World of Warcraft is targeted toward a young male audience, but the audience is much larger. I find the model to be just right, no enhancements
Amanda: To a degree, you're right. I do appreciate that her beefiness lends credence to her strength. To me she looks like she could handle herself in a rough and tumble situation, but there's more to it than that. We have to suspend our disbelief while we're playing the game to a degree since there is so much that is implausible, like regularly resurrecting, magic as a whole, and an uncanny ability for some characters to disappear in the open in broad daylight. Being that it's a fantasy game, i give over to the fantastic elements of it.
Thanks for making me take a hard look at why I play a Tauren female, as well as other ladies who prefer to roll femme-minotaurs. There are many reasons why I play her. Although it's not the best racial in the game, I do like the ability to Warstomp. Tauren can be Shaman, Hunter, and Druid, which are my favorite classes in the game. I can't figure out in my own head if the plauability of her heroic stature or the general aesthetic of Tauren female figure is more important. To a degree I can't separate the two.
The female Orc is also quite muscular, and has a certain Grace Jones-like appeal. But she's also got the exaggerated characteristics that the target audience may find appealing. The Dranei are similarly proportioned. If we were applying real-world physics to the game, I could see either of them as viably wielding a sword or an axe. I'd actually really like to know what our readers think about it. It makes sense to pick a character you find attractive. I mean you spend enough time with them, you might as well like the way the character looks. And although Evolutionary Psychology does suggest that there is a natural tendency for physical attraction to certain characteristics, I'd like to think that we've evolved to a more civilized place. Then again, I've known a few people (of both genders) who have rolled Warlock, just to be able to command a Succubus. I firmly believe that you should roll what you like, but it comes as very little surprise that Tauren female characters are pretty few and far between.
David: There's something about the typical supermodel look that appeals to the lowest common denominator in people these days. Everyone has a sex-drive, and everyone wants to be sexy, so it makes sense that players would often choose to play blood elves, draenei, or even make a warlock just to boss the succubus around.

I'm 6" IRL. I enjoy my short little gnome mage the most.
At work, I'm the boss. In the guild, I specifically request to be the lowest ranked peon with the least amount of responsibility and duties.
It's not always about rolling/playing something similar to your real life situation. I find the escapism to be the best part of my gaming experience. I DID roll a tauren female and found I preferred them over the males for the simple fact that they aren't so damn big. The tauren males (got a 70 tauren druid) clog up the screen with their presence. The females are much slimmer and I don't feel like I have to look over their massive shoulders to see where they're going.
However,
I am not my character. I am not how much money I have in my virtual bank. I am not my job.
I am the all-singing, all dancing crap of this world.

I just love female taurens. There´s something cute (and yes, SEXY) about a bold cow with soft voice. I am female and I have a lot of female friends that plays female taurens too. But I know some guys too. I don´t think that cows are such a minority; at my server, we have less female orcs or trolls.

My wife likes them because it allows her to play horde and not feel 'evil'.

I have a female character of every class except the Tauren. Something about the proportions on the female just look off to my eyes. I like the idea/concept/background of the race, but visually, they just don't look quite right to me. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I always want to ask every Tauren Female I see for free Ice Cold Milk.
They ignore me. :(

I was so excited to see some love for tauren females! I am a girl IRL and I rolled a tauren female hunter as my first char; she is still my main. Even before I started playing I knew I wanted to play one. I enjoy that rarity factor and being unique (which is why my next highest char is a dwarf female).
My fiance' also thinks that tauren females have a really cute butt wiggle as they are running.
I agree that it takes a real woman to be able to play a race with "a little meat on her bones." They are a lot of fun to play and I have a hard time wanting to play any other race!

[male here]
I started a female tauren druid a few weeks back (only at level 23 right now), but I'm enjoying her quite a bit. When I initially decided to create her, I knew that I didn't want a male tauren because they're a dime-a-dozen and I've never really been a big fan of their bulk.
I've also had quite a bit of influence from my fiance whose first main was a female troll rogue whom she loved. She eventually switched over to alliance to play with me as a nelf priest, but eventually she tired of the healing game and rolled a female dwarf warrior... and she fell in love with that toon as much as her troll. She even created another female troll alt a while back just because she loves them so much. I also find it somewhat endearing that she hates any troll female she sees that has the one "pretty" face they have for an option.
Oh, and to the person who said that it's a good bet that a female dwarf priest has a lady behind the wheel... well, I got me one of those, too. ;) And she kicks ass!

Real men roll female Tauren!
I've had this discussion in my guild before. Even if you don't think there is a relationship between your own sexual identity and your avatar's (some agree, some disagree, some of those who disagree may be in denial), it's impossible to deny that the relationship doesn't exist for many players in the game.
One of the ways it expresses itself is in the form of a sort of expectation in the WoW community that males must either play male characters or the “super model” type female characters, and if you don’t, there’s something wrong with you. I once intentionally rolled Female Tauren in response to this. People will often assume that you are male in real life if you play any horde female character, except a Tauren. The implications and assumptions of this expectation are pretty absurd, but they’re also just another part of the game you can have fun with if you play your cards right.
“Yes, I am a female Tauren and I WILL kick your ass.”
Genju Apr 9th 2008 7:35PM
hahaha. More power Bro. I got 2 female taurens. One is my main.
Calybos Apr 9th 2008 7:38PM
What I'm wondering about is the warlock's Succubus pet. Why don't female warlocks have an Incubus option--a little MALE demonic beefcake to strut around and show off?
Isa Apr 9th 2008 7:50PM
All of my alts are women with cute looks. I find female Tauren very cute with a nice figure. However I couldn't get over their lame jokes, animations, and sleepy voice. She doesn't say "Moo", she says "Muuuuh." :( Mine is lvl 14, Ill get over it.
I've only crossed 2 lady Tauren in the wild (server), while the rest were bg twinks. It's like people only play them as a joke to be an "ugly" twink.
Also, I encourage everyone to play a female Dwarf caster with long hair. Just WATCH the cuteness!
Everilas Apr 9th 2008 8:13PM
@37
I can probably answer that with one word: Seduce.
Urthona Apr 9th 2008 8:32PM
So? Males can be seduced, and can be the seducer. Maybe it makes you uncomfortable to think a sprite designed to look like a COLT performer can charm you senseless, but it's magic folks.
I'd love for there to be a reskin for the succubus model that looks like an incubus, but they'd need to dub a male voice too.
Blizz could make a bundle off people who'd buy reskin/dub customizations on disk at game shops. I'd pay $30 for a disk that added a mod to the UI that let me alter my druid forms. I assume warlocks the same for their demon pets. And then their folks who just want a new voice for their main. Like female Tauren.
The number one complaint I have about Horde females is the auditory. I like the amazonian physique of the orcs, and the stature of tauren squaws, lady trolls' posture confuses me... but it's their voices that bother me to no end. Far too raspy. Being stereotypically "hard, tough, and strong" doesn't mean you need to be spit gravel when you cough.
The female tauren's voice actor sounds like she's trying too hard. I love my minotaurettes, I adore their dance, but I can't stand their "Need More Rage".

"I was kind of amused and slightly annoyed by Irrenicus of Azshara's (deleted) forum post that Tauren females should have larger breasts."
That's begging a question, no? Why do any of them other than humans have breasts at all? The undead seem to have had their boobs preferentially preserved over the rest of their body (odd curse, that) but there's no particular reason the rest should have anything resembling human secondary sexual characteristics...
...other than it'd weird people out. WoW played it safe which is terrific business. All the races are humans. One is short, one is short and square. The one most different has a cow head. They're humans in rubber masks. (The sexual dimorphism in the space squids is kinda neat though. I bet all those fillies have back problems soon as they hit space puberty. Small of my back hurts whenever I see one.)
While I'm addicted to the human rep racial, my alts tend to be tauren, both male and female. Male real life.
Top Secret Hint: you've not laughed until you've seen the casting animation on a female dwarf with long pigtails. It's priceless. It's not that pally healing you, it's the Light possessing her braids!
Ves Apr 9th 2008 10:35PM
I love my cow. She has big soulful eyes, long eyelashes, and a wet tongue. What more could I want?
Rashi Apr 9th 2008 11:33PM
Because I'm unique when I stand out in a crowd is why I roll the female tauren.
graham.smith09 Apr 10th 2008 12:13AM
I've always been proud of the fact that I am a guy who plays a female Tauren shaman (statistically the least likely thing it is possible to play). I love my character precisely because female Tauren DONT have that absurdly proportioned look. to me they have always had a cute, oddly maternal feel to them that appealed to me as being much more realistic than the other female characters.
And besides, they look damm good in a dress
