The Light and How to Swing It: Blood Knights moving forward

What does this imply for Blood Elf Paladins? Gameplay-wise, not much. Although I would've welcomed a change in the quests for Horde, the biggest changes were that all the quests that were previously available from Lady Liadrin are now obtained from Lord Solanar Bloodwrath. Obviously moved for logistical reasons, the quests are virtually identical to the ones that Lady Liadrin dispensed. The one noticeable change is in the early quest Claiming the Light from Knight-Lord Bloodvalor. In the original quest, players were to fill a Shimmering Vessel with power from M'uru, whom the Blood Knights used to hold captive. The updated quest now requires the player to draw the lingering energies from the Blood Elf Magisters rather than M'uru, indicating that what remains are mere vestiges of the power that the Blood Knights once wielded.
The salvation of Silvermoon
In the dialog between A'dal and Lady Liadrin, A'dal recounts a prophecy made by the ancient Draenei Velen, where Liadrin is destined to bring redemption to her people. It was slow in coming, although it is a welcome change in Silvermoon City whose inhabitants had, for over a year, been pledging allegiance to an entity the entire player base knew to be a bad guy. It was getting a bit silly, really. In Patch 2.4, subtle changes took place in Silvermoon City. The Arcane Guardians patrolling the city have been reprogrammed to buzz in error when mentioning the name Kael'thas, and certain Blood Knights now declare allegiance to Silvermoon rather than the false prince. Small changes, but it moves the story forward. Even the previously bland and quote-less Lor'themar Theron now says something about Kael'thas' betrayal.
More than any other class available to the Blood Elves, the Paladin class is the most lore-rich and tied in to the race's storyline. In practical game terms, this only lends flavor and one key spell, Seal of Blood, but little else. Every Blood Elf Paladin who has completed the True Masters of the Light series for the Summon Charger spell are also awarded the Blood Knight Tabard. It's like getting into an exclusive club. Compared to the Alliance version of the quest, the Horde quest for the epic mount is ridiculously easy. But what it lacks in difficulty, it makes up for in juicy lore and intrigue. If you've ever leveled a Blood Elf Paladin, you'll know that they're the spoiled little rich kids in some sort of boarding school. At Level 60 Level 20 (thanks, Alex!), they gain the unique ability to emote /eye the Silvermoon City Guards, who will genuflect in response.
Interestingly, despite the new allegiance to the cause of A'dal and Lady Liadrin's commitment to finding a new source of power, the current quests still explore the Blood Elves' obsession with controlling power and their misuse of the Light. As the quest line for the Blood-Tempered Ranseur indicates, the Blood Knights are not beyond utilizing demonic elements as long as it serves their purpose. The quest line for the Thalassian Charger involves desecrating Alonsus Chapel -- the one place in Stratholme that is protected from Scourge invasion -- and slaying Aurius, whom old-school players will recognize as an ally against Baron Rivendare. As much as I enjoy the whole Blood Knight lore and persona, this particular quest line made me squirm uncomfortably because it's just downright evil.
Of course, with Lady Liadrin's disillusionment with Kael'thas, she returns in faith to the Light. Her taking arms against Kael'thas is, as A'dal put it, the first step on her (and consequently, her fellow Blood Knights') new path. We speculated in the past that gameplay-wise, the Horde-only Seal of Blood might be given to the Alliance. Of course, that didn't quite happen. I know many Alliance players continue to petition for Seal of Blood (with countless analysis and number-crunching). Just because it didn't come with Patch 2.4, though, it doesn't mean it won't. But I wouldn't hold my breath just yet.
What tomorrow brings
As Lor'themar notes in his rumor text, everything that the Blood Elves know is in flux. This means that although the quests don't currently reflect the Blood Knights' new resolve to turn away from their misguided, Light-siphoning ways, there's a good chance that it can still change. Blizzard has been experimenting with progressive storylines with small, almost unnoticeable changes, they took an interesting step with the removal of M'uru from Silvermoon City.
Because M'uru was so central to the story of the Blood Knights and their source of power, his absence leaves a huge vacuum in game interactive lore. It's something that Blizzard should address sometime in the future, and the current Horde Paladin quests won't hold. It seems unlikely that A'dal, as peace-loving as the Naaru is, would stand for the continued abuse of the Light that the quests depict. In fact, Mu'ru states that Lady Liadrin's people "will die if they do not change." We can only assume that this change refers mainly to their lust for power -- and no class exemplifies that more than the Paladin.
Personally, I'm excited to see what Blizzard has planned for the Blood Knight storyline. Even if it only means minor changes to quest texts (although I'm not quite sure how they can make the burning down of Alonsus Chapel less evil), it moves the Blood Knight story forward. In fact, when Wrath of the Lich King finally arrives, I'm pretty sure we'll be getting more Paladin lore in the form of a certain Highlord and his legendary sword. By that time, I'm fairly confident that Blizzard will have fixed Blood Knight lore to reflect that they no longer steal the Light but actually receive it through faith much like, well, true Paladins. It only makes sense.

OH MY HECK! I didn't know that /eye thing! And I've been a BE pally for ages! Is it unique to lvl 60+ paladins? If so that's awesome!
I know paladins were awesome, but this makes me awesomer!
BTW I think one can find the balance between the hunger for power and serving the light. One can just steal powers from the bad guys, for example.

This is not a Paladin article, its a Blood Elf article. Please re-title accordingly.

Hear hear!
Matthew Rossi Apr 9th 2008 5:30PM
Why is it not a paladin article? If it was about Uther, it would be a paladin article, yes?
Dready Apr 9th 2008 8:19PM
Err.. probably because it's mainly focusing on Blood Elf Paladin lore and quests? I don't see a Blood Elf warlock doing the quest for a Blood-Tempered Ranseur anytime soon..

Conceptually, this article and the Silver Hand Lore article ( http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/04/10/know-your-lore-the-silver-hand/ ) are identical. How does one become a "Light and How to Swing It" article and the other "Know Your Lore"?
Sorry, this was not on target.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually miss having Mu'ru in Silvermoon. I'm a fan of having a progressing story in WoW, but I don't like things being removed. I would much rather that everything stay in place and have the progressive parts of the story function through your character as opposed to actually taking things out of the game. For example, I'm in favor of having Kael'Thas and Onxyia in two places at once. The story progresses as you move throughout the world, not in the world itself. In fact, I would have liked Rexxar and Lord Kazzak to stay in Azeroth AND be included in Outland. I much prefer that kind of story progression. That way, you characters can encounter Rexxar when you're level 30ish in Desolace and then meet him again in Blade's Edge around 65ish.
Furthermore, I'm upset with Mu'ru and Liadrin leaving Silvermoon because I loved the idea that the Blood Knights stole their power. I thought it was great having a race/class that was founded on such a sinister act. I don't like that the Blood Kights are now going to receive the powers of the Light in a genuine way. It's a bit too carebear for my tastes. We have plenty of good races, we could stand for a few more genuinely evil ones. It's better for the lore in my opinion.

Wow. I could not disagree more with everything you just wrote. I am a big proponent of the "changing world" model, and embraced Patch 2.4 with open arms in hopes that it will usher in more changes.
In particular: "[t]he story progresses as you move throughout the world, not in the world itself." But then the story really doesn't progress. Things happen in stories: actions are taken and those actions create results. You slay Onyxia after completing a long series of quests, but Stormwind never recovers from her treachery. That's not a story. That playing at shadow puppetry.
The nature of MMOs is that player actions cannot change everything, and that's fine. But I think there is a middle ground, and a time when changes should be implemented. I think Blizzard could go back and remove Onyxia from the game: she's been around forever, everyone knows the story. But, mostly, I think that this middle ground is represented in Patch 2.4, which dealt with (at least partially) what was becoming an inconsistent, somewhat bizarre plot hole, and which provided a series of quests which create tangible, progressive results.

I couldnt stand to sit there and listen to Lady Liadrin and Adal talk in Shattrah, because Adal's terrible poetry was too awful to read through, and thus I will never see that small portion of the lore
I mean really, Silvery Moon, washed in blood? Knightly Lady sworn to blood? this is a prophecy? It sounds painfully obvious and laughable, other than that im all for the lore, but really, if they are going to use prophecy in the future I hope they keep it vague and dont hurt my brain any more like that.
All the lines of dialogue are basically names for stuff broken up... Silvermoon... Blood... Knight... Bestride the Sun (sunstrider), argh.
Zach Apr 9th 2008 6:40PM
Alas, the Draenei are terrible poets.
Angelus Apr 9th 2008 7:10PM
being a draenei paladin, i must concure: my poetry sucks. :(
seamonkey Apr 9th 2008 9:49PM
Same here. I was trying to read their little conversation and I've never felt like yelling LORELOL as much as that moment. What a terrible deus ex machina for the "closing" of this chapter in warcraft history.

Time to pick up my Paladin and dust him off so I can test out this /eye deal...
Wormfather Apr 9th 2008 5:06PM
GREAT ARTICLE...although this was a more of a know your lore type of thing (which I like).
darian Apr 9th 2008 5:27PM
I'd be keyed into these prophecies more if we heard about them before the events rather than afterward. I realize that Blizzard is writing the story anyway, but I was expecting our Lady to raise a long elf eyebrow at A'dal and ask "Did you just make that up?" given that I'd never heard of the prophecy before.
Unmei Apr 10th 2008 2:53AM
and why would we? it's not as if the Draenei are coming up peacefully to silvermoon and going "Hay U guyz Guess wat! You should like stop summoning that fel magics your prince is giving you because you'll all be Fuk'd in the end"
=/ lore wise the Draenei hate us for what Keal'thas did. Valen told his prophecy to A'dal in hopes one day A'dal would meet with the one he fortold. it's not that far fetched. You should read Rise of the Horde. Very interesting insight to the Draenei lore background.

What REALLY Happened between A'dal and Lady Liadrin!
Adal: we need helps for sunwell quest and need more pally healers k
XxLiadrinxx: y should help u?
Adal: cause cause my mate velenz liek had a prophecy
Velelz: ya ya
XxLiadrinxx: wot?
Adal: ummm, liek ummm..... o ya liek silvermoon, silvery moon ya that's right! liek has blood knights.... oh oh washed in blood n liek lead into knight lol
HankD Apr 9th 2008 6:35PM
I object to the blood knights having a "lust for power"... the whole blood elf race has been shoved into an "ends justify the means" mentality, and the blood knights are the best exemplars of that: they don't lust for power for its own ends, they pursue power to protect their race.
On the other hand, I object to them getting the Light through faith, also. The Light abandoned them when they needed it, the fact that Kael ALSO betrayed them won't make them suddenly trusting and happy... just driven to destroy Kael and reclaim the Sunwell, which makes teaming up with A'dal palatable...
Zach Apr 9th 2008 6:47PM
From an RP standpoint, I think it's great material. Practically, though, without M'uru in Silvermoon, every Horde Paladin would lose their power. You can only have 'residual energies' for so long. I think the redemption of the Blood Elf race, starting with Paladins, is a really good idea. Nothing is sweeter than a return to Faith, imo.
Unmei Apr 10th 2008 3:34AM
I agree with the posted who replied to this comment. My also addition to this is that Seeing as how the new "Heroic" Class is going the be a Death Knight. There's only so many ways you can do this. Obviously no one is going to take souls and shove them into Death Pali corpses like the originally did. So.... the new generation of Death Knights are of "Those who have lost their way"
I think this addition or push in the path of Belf Paladin redemption is also opening us up to the possibility of which races will be becoming the race of the Death Knights for the Horde side. Now if they also make it so that Orc's become them as well..... I'd love to see how they would explain that one seeing as how the ONLY Horde Race to be Paladin's are blood elves.
:P silly Alli have 3 Races..... then again we got more options for Shaman's (whoohoo)
