Actually it's very likely that the first line of people you get when you petition in game do not in fact have access to things like guild chat logs from months ago.

Not sure how it is at Blizzard, but back in the day with SOE there were about three or four "ranks" of GMs, and the early ranks (first people you heard from usually) couldn't do much at all other than move your problem up, answer basic questions, or tell you it was something they flat out don't handle.
