Gamers on the Street: Oceanic players persist despite performance issues

Oceanic players continue to snarl this week at continued server performance issues that cramp their play. Oceanic subscribers playing from the other side of the world have dedicated servers, yes – but the servers are physically located in North America, and no consideration seems to have been given to shifting maintenance and resource-intensive background processes to non-peak local hours.
Needless to say, a good number of Oceanic players are up in arms over spiraling post-2.4 performance issues. Blue reps continue to take the heat from red-hot flames, reflecting a continued determination to work through the problems. We decided to pop in on a couple of Oceanic servers themselves, away from the heat of the forums, to see what the player temperature seemed to be.
Slavrix, Level 70 Undead Warlock <Kaizen>We first chatted with Slavrix on Jubei'Thos. Because of Jubei'Thos' status as the only Oceanic realms not grouped with other Oceanic realms in the Bloodlust battlegroup (Jubei'Thos is in the Vengeance battlegroup), players here seem especially sensitive to being pitted against players who live much closer geographically to their servers.
Gamers on the Street: So what's going on with performance here? Are you guys feeling a lot of problems on this server?
Slavrix: We've had server dropouts and insane lag issues from about 6:30 until around 10:30.
Where are you playing from, geographically?
Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.
How long have you noticed these particular performance issues? Since 2.4, or since before that?
Before 2.4, there would be a lag spike that lasted about 15 minutes at about 9:00 p.m., but that was because of the honour updates that happened daily. Since 2.4, it has been lasting about three to four hours.
We've heard there are new problems created by yet another new background process that's running.
Yeah, I've read that on the forums also. But you'd think that they could simply change the times for these processes, wouldn't you?
Do the performance issues change your guild's schedule?
Because of my guild's being made up of people from all over the world (one of the reasons we know [the problems are] server-side), we are unable to just change the schedule, so we miss out on entire days and weeks of raiding.
Do you normally raid during the laggy hours?
Yeah, because it is prime time for the server and is the only time suited to the majority of our guild members, because of other commitments.
Do you think Blizzard should be doing or offering customers more than they are, or do you think it's just an inevitable waiting game until they can change processes or fix the problem?
I think that yes, they could do more than they are. Even if it was just a simple account credit because of the missed times, or as large as new server hardware and the servers being moved to the Oceanic region, as this server is designated for. Either/or.
Think you'll simply give up at some point, unless the problem improves very soon?
Doubtful. they will get a handle on it eventually, especially when people like yourself start to get this information more public.
We suspect Blizzard is working hard to figure out the best way to fix things -- but I know this is frustrating for all the players on these servers. Anything else you'd want to add?
Not that I can think of ATM -- but I thank ye for looking into this, mate. :)
Loughue, Level 70 Dwarf Warrior <THE OUTCASTS> After speaking with Slavrix, we hopped over to Aman'Thul to chat with Loughue.
Loughue: Only beef I have is that lag spikes seem to occur completely randomly, even when there are few people on. And when you're in a raid like Kara or Gruul's, you don't need the entire group/half the group/ANY of the group being DCed for apparently no reason. MT DCs, everyone dies; main heals DCs, either everyone dies or almost everyone dies.
It was our impression that the big lag problems were hitting at predictable times, such as when battleground calculations were being made.
Those calculations no longer occur, as honor is now awarded immediately upon acquisition. It was true that lag used to spike on honor roll, but with honor roll now gone, it shouldn't be such an issue.
We've heard, though, that there are new background processes that are contributing to the new performance issues. Have you noticed a change in the lag since 2.4?
For the first two days, lag was impossible. Doing battlegrounds (AV in particular) meant basically hoping that you were moving/fighting, because you couldn't tell what was happening on screen. Most people DCed for no reason or found themselves dead after fighting vastly inferior opponents.
Has that improved since the first days after the patch?
Only mildly. Battlegrounds are now playable, but even in off times, entire raids are DCed.
So has your guild rescheduled around times you think the lag is worse? Or do you find it unavoidable?
At times, it is unavoidable. Generally, most of our top ends are on at unusual times on the weekend or during the week, so it makes it hard to get organized around lag spikes. Typically we can get away without being booted between 10:30 p.m. ST and 12:30 a.m. ST -- and even then, someone quite often has to relog due to lag.
Where are you geographically located?
I'm in central Australia.
Have you always played on this server?
Originally, I played on the U.S. Illidan server (so I was used to large lag) but had to change due to time issues.
Since you've said you PvP, would you prefer Oceanic-only battlegroups, where you were not put up against players who don't have the same distance to their servers? Or if they fix the new issues, do you think that is a non-issue?
If we were given dedicateds, it's an non-issue. But as it stands, it's hard to compete in the battlegroups. It's not been unheard of that an Oceanic side (either Horde or Alliance) is booted, while the side with dedicated (servers) fights through a battleground with no or few opponents.
We appreciate your time chatting. Hope things get better for you soon!
Thank you.

QQ more imo. With programs like lowerping and if you just get a decent connection in the first place, PvE is just fine. I'm in Auckland, New Zealand and am part of an Oceanic guild. We successfully raid BT/Hyjal with no real lag issues.
Arena is the only thing that suffers, and even then you need to be at about 1900+ rating before peoples ping is more important that their skill.
Once again this site looks at entry level guilds who barely raid and listen to their opinions. That's fine and all but about an interview with a proper dedicated raider in a successful raiding guild. If we can clear Hyjal with Oceanic pings, stop your wining about Karazhan.
Stormtamer Apr 14th 2008 5:52PM
Im sorry, so your saying external programs have to be used to fix an issue, that Blizzard brought about in one of the patchs they release, when the fact the oceanic servers are looked at seperately than the normal WoW US servers, should mean this should be less likely to happen?
Also, i dobut WoW Insider go out specifically for Kara guilds, they just pick people, and seeing as the MAJORITY of WoW player are at, or around that level, they are more likely to come across them.
Lisa Poisso Apr 14th 2008 6:03PM
Hey Pyro, you are spot on -- we absolutely DO listen to all types of players at all levels. WoW covers a lot of different types of players and styles of play, and we definitely cover all of them.
That said, I did speak with quite a few other players for this particular story -- including some you would call "proper dedicated raiders in a successful raiding guild" -- and they all did in fact observe troublesome performance issues. Glad to hear your guild is avoiding the problems, whatever connection and additional solutions you may be using. Seems to me it would be cool of you to share your connection and program tips for reducing problems. How about it?

Looking on WoWJutsu, Kazien (the guild of the first person) is 8/9 in Black Temple (and he has gear from Akama). Hardly an entry level guild who barely raids.
Chris Apr 14th 2008 8:21PM
I'm in Sydney on Barthilas, been averaging around 2000ms latency between 6 and 11pm for the past 1.5 weeks and I seriously doubt lowerping would get my latency anywhere near playable on a single account, nevermind attempting to dual box (paying for 2 accounts sitting idle right now)
I'm also on cable, not shaped and don't have any problems with high latency to other games or sites.
QQ more? Damn straight I will. With enough QQing something will actually get done about the problem.
Script Apr 14th 2008 8:10PM
Your missing the point.
The ~500ms we are used to and understand that.
What we dont like is that the server is BROKEN. We are dealing with pings double that of what we are used to. The server consistantly crashes, there is at least a 30 second wait between looting something and actually receiving the loot. Talking to an NPC? Same deal. Instance servers constantly not found.
It's not just an latency issue.
Wade Apr 15th 2008 11:03AM
suck me, try playing in bgs against a hunter with their 0 deadzone on australian lag while they're sitting 100ks from blizzards servers.
Nihlrok Apr 14th 2008 6:00PM
That sucks, I'm glad I don't have to deal with that issue.
RoggStudelpest Apr 15th 2008 12:41AM
I am in a guild that is on an American server that raids late night (mostly Aussie players). We are 5/5 Hyjal and 7/9 BT (Laser and Gypsies....LaG anyone?!?!) and we always get hit by insane lag spikes.
Sine 2.4 instead of getting a 10 minute spike @ 2am server we now get them non-stop throughout the morning and get an absolutely insane one @ 5am server that lasts for 15-20 minutes+. Not the best thing when you are half way through a boss fight and suddenly everything on your screen just locks up. We usually end up halting the raid till it clears and we all just sit there tapping our feet /dancing the time away...
Fix your game Blizzard!
Moshnerd Apr 14th 2008 8:29PM
Call me insensitive, but "Wollongong" made me lol.
But in all seriousness, I'm sympathetic of these Oceanic WoW-ers. I QQ when my latency is +300, so I commend them for dealing with those enormous pings.
StoNe Apr 14th 2008 8:49PM
You get below 300? Pix or it didn't happen.
I too are Oceanic and the issue isn't just lag, it's the game crashing when leaving or entering an instance that sucks.
"world server down" seems to make its way to my title page only too often.
Moshnerd Apr 14th 2008 11:20PM
Yeah, and it's kind of weird, because there are no servers that are in my timezone (Atlantic Standard), so I play on an EST server, and still have relatively low ping.
However, I can barely move in Shattrath.
Reuso Apr 15th 2008 10:23AM
Heh... You guys should move to europe, my ping is below 50 most of the time...
I think it's more of connection issue then a server issue. Aren't there any servers in Australia or New-Sealand, or does everything need to be routed through a long distance line to the US?
Tensor Apr 15th 2008 5:13PM
Im on Jubie'Thos, Every single night I get Disconnected about 10 times, every ten minutes you get 1-2min loot lag and trying to do any instances/raids is impossible. I have missed badges twice now due to DCing, once on V at the end of Heroics Ramps and on Maiden, and im trying to gather the badges for gear
Bayard Randel Apr 15th 2008 6:27PM
Raiding isn't impossible on Jubei at the moment, it's just very, very painful.
Matik Apr 14th 2008 9:12PM
I'm too living in Australia (Melbourne), but I'm playing on Durotan-EU and everything is working fine ... ok, 600ms throughout, but no crashes or dcs. Interestingly enough I'm the one with the most stable connection in my former guild.
Starayo Apr 14th 2008 9:46PM
This problem, to my knowledge, has only hit OCEANIC realms. I can play on Ravenholdt-US and Lightbringer-US with absolutely no problem, but jump onto Aman'thul... (if I can get through the queue, that is...)
The Accountant Apr 14th 2008 9:55PM
Gee Pyro l2flame mate, my 5 year old goes better than you. Nicely done though Lisa - WoW is about all players regardless of skill or progression. We all pay our "$15 bucks a month".
Back on topic - I play on Blackwater Raiders from Port Macquarie NSW and there has been a definite deterioration in latency since 2.4. I used to get nice low sever times of less than 150ms but now 300 odd is the norm on an excellent day - 450 plus usual :-(. Nothing else has changed.
Makes all content tough particularly as a tree. It just sux having LB rolls drop off and not knowing whether that rejuv/sm got through as the game can just freeze for a few seconds at a time. It definitely is not PC as other content and games are just fine and as they have always been.
Blizzard definitely needs to address it. I don't want to get the stage where I cannot go in good faith on a raid or not get invited because of performance issues with hardware that I have no control over.
Ohh - Woolongong means "sound of the sea" or something similar in the aboriginal language of the area.
Badger Apr 14th 2008 11:26PM
Sweet Fancy Moses!

Sibe Apr 15th 2008 12:00AM
Pryo and Stormtamer,
Do your research first retards. Slavrix is in an Hyjal farming guild, and would be BT farming if it wasn't for the server problems every damn night. It has slowed our guild's Illidan kill by two weeks now and we are just getting sick of this shit.
