Also interesting read for me as my lock is about to venture into 25 man content. I've comfortably ruled the damage meters as 41/0/20 for quite a while in 5 mans through 10 and am sporting 1300 unbuffed spell damage and 201 spell hit. I'm currently trying to acquire a few items with more crit on them to see if I can viably bring up my crit without lowering my damage too much. I don't know, I'm not truly excited about the prospect of being a shadow mage. I really love being affliction. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes.As far as suppression, I really wish warlock articles would just quit with its value, maybe it had some leveling in bc or in the first kara runs after bc opened but there is absolutely no excuse to use it even with affliction. 40 percent of your damage should be coming from shadow bolt and and the last thing you need is resisted shadowbolts, soulshatters, banishes, etc. The only way it would work is if drain life was taken over shadowbolt which has been show to be less damage, can't crit and still doesn't cover things like soulshatter, banishes, fears. Shadow priests have a viable talent for including spell hit in their spec, we really do not. Also, UA consistently outdamages ruin so if you're not running it that way, you can't directly consider it a max damage affliction build. The same can be said of switching back from crit gear to affliciton, your gear isn't set up for it. It's crit heavy and damage lite, though I'm sure it works just fine in 5 mans for the burst damage.

Your point about suppression applies to anyone who can get hit capped, but most locks aren't gonna be at 202 until a bit after Kara. Hence putting points in suppression does help until that point, even if it does only mean having UA and other DoTs not get resisted. By the way, you mention fear which is an affliction spell and therefore does get affected by suppression. Also, I'm curious to know what gear you have pre-25 man content that gives you 1300 +dmg unbuffed? Most of the T6 endgame raiding locks I know have under 1500 with Fel Armor on...care to link your armory page?

UA will not always out-damage Ruin. Once you have enough crit gear (25% is the theoretical base value), picking up Ruin instead of UA will boost your DPS, even at the expense of a little spell damage.A UA-based Affliction spec can always do insane damage. There's no question about that. But the question isn't about doing tons of damage, it's about doing the most potential damage in the most applicable of situations, and that's where the 0/21/40 shines.

Retron, ravenelle proudmoore. Spellstrike hood and pants, frozen shadow shoulder and chest, runed spell cuffs, rittsyn's lost pendant and adornement of lost souls for neck, studious wraps and gloves of arcune acuity in glove slot, also have tier 4 in bank, belt of blasting, boots of incantations and frozen shadoweave in bank, seer's signet, ashyen's gift, seal of the exorcist, signet of the archmage and buying fused nethergon band for spell hit set by end of week, icon of the silver crescent and timbal's focusing crystal, also have quag's eye and am collecting crusade deck, scryer's blade of focus with soul frost, orb of the soul eater, carved witchdoctor's stick. I show on armory right now as 1162 without fel armor on but it'd tweak a bit if I changed to incorporate spellhit back to 202, was running heroics last night. so may not be 1300, but easily 1240 without consumables. Your right on fear, bad example, but shadowbolt, shadowburn, soulshatter is enough to not want to be resisted. You can have 201 spell hit easily going into kara. I did, and used the bloodgem at the time. By all means I'm saying take a few points if you need to to enter kara but you can gear beyond kara doing heroics, making craftables, etc. Few of my items ever got upgraded in there though I was very happy to get rittsyn's lost pendant.

I'll try to sign out tonight with the spellhit 201 version on and see exactly where it sets at. For ease it'll be:http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Proudmoore&n=Ravenelle
