Forum post of the day: Murphy's Law

The original poster noted "Every time I get to that point in 2v2 arena where a psychic scream will let me get off 2-3 mana burns, my fear makes my target run in a perfect L, away from me and behind a pillar before I can even get off 1 cast. It's like that's the exact path they would have taken if they weren't feared."
Such is life in the world of randomness and procs. Some of these others might sound familiar:Delrof of Argent Dawn, "Every time I fight a DPS intensive boss fight, Windfury never goes off."
- Gazlow of Kalecgos, "Watching Beast Lord shoulders drop 3 times in a row in Steam Vaults on my druid. Then running it 8+ times on my hunter never to see them drop."
- Abloodymess of Blood Furnace, Ii will somehow get crushed 3 times in a row by Prince Malchezzar even though he has only a 3% chance to crush me"
- Gamera of Uther, "Dropping Grounding Totem the instant Death Coil hits, so you run around like an idiot watching it sit there useless."
Nethaera even weighed in on the subject with "Anytime I need to roll for something I want, I lose. If it's something I don't need and isn't worth all that much, I'll win the roll every time." Sometimes I find it hard to find a group. Whatever my spec for Shaman or Paladin, groups are inevitably looking for something else.
Have you found that Murphy's Law applies to your WoW experience?

I can relate on my shaman and pally. When I'm on my pally (holy) they want a tank. When I'm on my shaman (dps) they want a healer. Usually seems to be my luck.

I have this on a regular basis with my shaman - when I'm farming or grinding dailies, I'll get a nice big lightning bolt crit which will leave the mob with 89 hitpoints left. I refuse to use the 400something mana to earth shock, so I'll go at it with my dagger. I have 350 dagger skill, but somehow the mob proceeds to do a bunch of damage to me AND parry, block AND dodge my attacks before I get fed up and hit earth shock anyway.
Also sometimes I'll get a string of lame non-crits and the very last spell I cast will be a huge crit, when the mob has 100 HP left. What a waste.

man i know exactly what you're talking about! happens all the time - for example:
nightfall on my locks seems to proc right at the end of a fight with no other mobs in sight. same thing with quick shots on my hunter
yellow items will skill-up over and over until i reach xx9. then it seems to take about 3.
juts a few...

My main is an Arcane mage, and I swear the same exact thing happens to me. Arcane Concentration (ie clearcasting) only procs on the killing blow, with nothing else ever around to use it on. I mean, A few free Arcane Blasts (with the full debuff) too much to ask?
I've also experienced the "only win rolls on stuff I don't need" thing too.

Oh yeh, nightfall ALWAYS procs at the end of a fight, and if your spamming shadowbolt, you sometimes end up taking the last 42 life off him with a full SB...

"Lightning Speed" The Mongoose proc won't happen an entire trash mob pull. At the very end after 6 mobs dead, both weapons proc it.
I'm usually a Worgen at the end of a fight, not during it.
Ran BM 5-10 times trying to get the scarab as resto. Go as enhance, it drops every other time. The healer always needs it to.
Heroic Mech, the Abacus won't drop for me. I take over for my wife one time there, it drops for them.
Dragonspine Trophy...
Heroic MrT apparently only has Shards of Contempt for other people...
The list is endless.

I am Murphy's Law in Human form. I can't get anything to drop when i need it. I just finished running kara and Malchazeen dropped. Oh. I already have Emerald Ripper and a s1 off hand. And last week the poison trinket dropped from opera and i was doing yard work. I wasn't there when my guild Killed Nightbane either. I always seem to come in to late for anything.

Having an Infernal Drop on you when you are in a corner for the Prince Fight
Charlie Apr 18th 2008 12:46AM
Well that's just bad planning.
Now having an infernal drop on you, everytime one drops. Now thats bad luck.

Welcome to my world, Charlie.

The trick is to have all the ranged DPS stand on the pillar right near the door and have the MT tank him just in range of the DPS. Best to have the tank with his back against the wall/rail on the right hand side. Thats how we do it anyway.

While running Kara on my Mage for two weeks in a row Paladin healing gear dropped off of most of the bosses. I switch to my Paladin and now all the mage gear drops.
Same has happend to my buddy who switched to his rogue because no mage gear was droping.
Since December to present date my mage has only gotten three drops. He has not gotten a thing except the BOE random loot drops. Whenever the tier tokens drop we roll crap.
Oh and Engineering is Murphys Law.

All of these examples about bad luck finding loot aren't really in the spirit of Murphy's Law. If there was a law that states "You can't find what you need and you don't need what you can find." then these would be absolutely relevant.

I respecced shadow as my guild was in dire need of dps and always had 1-3 healers on the bench on raids. Next 4 raids were cancelled due to lack of healers.
ulgorok Apr 18th 2008 7:50PM
Any time I need something, either it doesn't drop, or I lose the roll to someone else who already has better gear than me anyways. How convenient.

Murphy is kicking in my gaming for sure. I'm Feral druid. Lots of times I've searched for group within my guild and PuGs outside of it (to tank or dps) when I log on and I can't find anything. And when I've played solo (BGs, dailys, the usual routine) for several hours and about to log out, I get 2 or 3 whisps like "Can you tank this for us?" or "we just need 1 dps to go". >_
