Battleground anti-tip of the day
Based on your votes last week for the best piece of anti-advice, congratulations to Eldron for submitting the winning entry: "Hey everyone! Type /afk list when to see who is afk!" He wins fame, respect, and ooh and ahhhs from crowds of adoring fans! Eldron's anti-advice won with 28.7% of the votes. When I first saw this piece of anti-advice I have to admit I went and tried it right away. I went in AV and typed in /bg, "Man... look at all these AFK people." A few folks responded and agreed with me, annoyed about it. "Type /afk list and report everyone that comes up, please," I say next.
I kid you not – 15 people immediately afk'd out. At that point I started getting some pretty hate-filled tells, so I decided to /afk out myself.
But nonetheless, I just about died from laughter. Of course, this is kind of mean, and just a tad underhanded, but really... sometimes things like this are just too funny to pass up. I tried this again later in a AB match that was going awful, and after I told everyone to type /afk list, someone replied "Yeah, wow, look at all those people." He then sent me a tell: "lol! I've been doing that all day!"
All the people that were dragging us down left the BG, and new ones came in and we won. So maybe this isn't that bad of advice after all...

if it gets the people who retard the game out and brings in peope who actually want to play then score one for you guys!! and really those people shouldnt be mad, they are the ones doing the bad deed! lol

I don't think I would go that far ZaG -
However, if you fall for this trick the first time, I hope you learned something, no big deal, 15min debuff you'll survive.
If you fall for this trick a second time... maybe it's time to wake up.
If you fall for it after that, the BGs probably better off.

lol slow news today? kind of old news really.
new one is to say in a major city; "come join me at my picnic type /camp"
part of the new patch 2.4 meant /camp acts as a logout, it works just aswell in av "we need more reinforcements help me set up camp, /camp"
Farrell Apr 19th 2008 6:14PM
it's been around a lot longer than 2.4 as /logout
I think it's always been in game - it's not a command that makes sense to people who've only played WoW, but for people playing MMORPGs since UO, it's the command they'd be used to, so it makes sense to support it.
Suzaku Apr 19th 2008 6:37PM
AFAIK, /camp has been used to logout for just about as long as I can remember. People were saying "lol type /camp and you can camp it's neat" like 3+ years ago.
In EQ, and I'm sure other MMOs, logging out was called "camping", and the logout timer was described as "preparing your camp" or something like that.

Congratulations! You got 15 real live people to afk out of your game. More room for the bots who don't fall for tricks like this. You should be proud of yourself for giving 15 new players the education they need about assholes in battlegrounds. I'm surprised you didn't pick your nose and show it to them while you were at it. Go back to grade school where you belong.

anyone who falls for that doesn't deserve to be in a BG, let alone an BG.
Tyranor Apr 19th 2008 8:02PM
Can't help but agree...I would be pissed as hell.

"All the people that were dragging us down left the BG, and new ones came in and we won. So maybe this isn't that bad of advice after all..."
What you succeeded in doing was getting the people who had never seen the trick before to get kicked out. The people who 'drag down' BGs are people like you who have the attitude "if all of you were as AWESOME as me we would be winning this BG". I'm sure you're the one telling everyone on your how much they suck as soon as the opposition caps one WSG flag.
People like you are what is wrong with WoW Adam. Not the noobs who 'ruin' your experience. Elitist ^*&^*&^heads like yourself.
I'd always thought that the wowinsider blogs were about inclusion for the average player and above petty bullcrap like this.

Surely you're overreacting. It's a harmless joke (well, except for the 15 minute deserter debuff), not the end of the world and all civilization - and not even good manners for that matter.
Pranks of one type or another have always been a part of human culture, seems to me you're getting way too worked up over this one. It's just a game after all.
And it teaches people about what /afk actually does. I find it useful to use myself when I'm in a hopeless battleground and the opposite team is just lolrolling right over us and I'm so frustrated I don't even care about the badge I'll miss for losing the round.
Mike Schramm Apr 19th 2008 6:22PM
Maybe it's just me, but this seems a little mean.
Anteia Apr 20th 2008 7:34AM
It's more than a 'little mean' that people have been mentioning. It's downright obnoxious. Somehow, my boyfriend, who has been PVPing since the days of SS vs TM fell for it in one battleground whens someone emoted to him. He's excellent at PVP, I don't know how he didn't see this trick before, but he hadn't. So congratulations, that battleground lost an active healer. Because God knows, those of us who actually stand in the middle of the onslaught, or tank Van or Drek, we hate those active healers. They should all /afk out.
Seriously, people who pull tricks like this are childish. I could see doing it once and being shocked it worked. Doing it more than once? It just shows you're have an obnoxious personality. There's enough frustrating elements in the battlegrounds, like losing when you're trying your hardest, and having to listen to the insults flung back and forth. Or playing a battleground you don't really want to, but trying, because you need the marks. Like someone said, all tactics like this do is let the ACTUAL AFK people remain and the people who were paying attention and wanting to help get tricked.

Yup, /camp has been around since the game came out... On my server it was the big anti-noob thing along with Alt-F4 (It gives you gold, try it out!) in the pre-BC days.
Robin Torres Apr 19th 2008 6:24PM
I find this kinda mean.
Hoggersbud Apr 19th 2008 6:24PM
Hey, that's mean!
Do it again!
Zooeyglass Apr 19th 2008 6:25PM
Relating the average number of afk's is a little mean.
Flis Apr 19th 2008 6:27PM
Hey, isn't that, like, kinda mean?
krat2 Apr 19th 2008 6:28PM
That does sound a bit mean
Mysteree Apr 19th 2008 6:28PM
Wow, dont you think that just just a little mean Adam?
Hobbes Apr 19th 2008 6:27PM
that seems a little mean...
