Comedy Central looks at campaigning in the World of Warcraft

Unfortunately, it would probably have been a lot better if they'd gotten someone who actually plays WoW to write it -- there are some OK references in there, but nothing really insightful into the world of Azeroth (and a few just don't make any sense). And none of the candidates are portrayed as Horde (Barack's an NE Druid, Hillary looks like a Dwarf Female Paladin, and Johnny Mac is a Gnome caster of some kind), especially since being Horde has already been proven to be politically popular. Throw in the fact that they missed out on four classes (what am I supposed to know as a Shaman?), and this turns out to be a pretty poor attempt by Comedy Central for a little Warcraft humor. Too bad.

I think you missed the point a bit. This isn't suppose to be an inside joke to all the wow fans. They couldn't write something that only people that played the game would get and alienate the other 80-90% of their audience. I know it's hard to believe but there are a whole lot of people out there that don't play WoW.

While you're right that this is going to be aimed at the non-WoW playing population, it's not funny from that perspective either. As it is, they look stupid to the WoW playing population and not-funny to everyone. For shame CC, for shame.

Satire is only funny when it reference that which it is being satirical about. In this case, it fails miserably. It might as well be about EQ, or LOTRO for as much as it references WoW.
I am not talking about inside jokes - there are plenty of things that could be "publicly" funny while being applicable to WoW in specific. All it takes is a little thought.
Druids with scimitars? Try staves or maces. Equally amusing (and one could debate the amusement), but now it's accurate.
Death Knights worrying about weapons? They're not even out yet and we all still know they have the runeblade and don't use other weapons.
Again, the references don't have to be inside jokes, just relevant.

I would think all WoW players would have been supporting Mike Huckabee, seeing as he received the all important Chuck Norris endorsement. ;) Guess he's not an option anymore, but perhaps McCain would be wise to give him the VP slot...

Why are all the candidates alliance? Does that mean we have a inner circle government with a high warlord ruler over both parties putting on this show every 4 years?

John McCain's Appeal to Druids:
"Likes: His badger-like commitment to the Iraq War."
I BEG TO DIFFER, SIR ... I BEG TO *DIFFER.*

ROFL! Hey, at least he continually documents (and is consistent) at not getting the point of stories that he covers and forgoing a "normal" point of view. He's ready for ISO 9001 certification no?
Burori Apr 23rd 2008 2:20PM
well there is democratic and republic right? Maybe they are all alliance because they are democrats? Maybe horde are republicans? and goblins/ogres/and naaru are libertarians!
Badger Apr 23rd 2008 2:22PM
Nah, McCain is a Republican, and he's apparently a Gnome Warlock.
robotrock Apr 23rd 2008 2:22PM
Mike, you are a gigantic nerd.

@Badger (since i still don't know how to reply)
ah ic, I don't pay attention to government based stuff (I'm a Jehovah's Whiteness) sooooo i don't know who is what even though when they bring it down to wow terms its kinda funny and good for a few laughs.

some people cannot see the reply button (like myself). you have to mouse over where the reply button is and you will see the mouse arrow turn to a finger/hand. Click that and reply away. Approximate location is just above the date of the next post.

It still helps to be informed about politics. The article was meh.
Sandbenders Apr 23rd 2008 5:54PM
Familiarity with politics and spelling are both good tools to have in your arsenal no matter who you are- all citizens, residents, and aliens in the US are governed by the same government and the same English dictionary.

What is it with WoW and Comedy Central? First we have "Make Love Not Warcraft", then Colbert on a WoW TCG card, and now this?
Rihlsul Apr 23rd 2008 2:55PM
Well, let's have WoWInsider tackle the case - I'd love to see this written up right, could be hilarious.
[Random Demo Candidate]: "Epic Mounts are to unattainable for the average Azerothian - my plan addresses this with a faction rebate!"
[McCain]: "Clearly, the war between Horde and Alliance must continue, we have to stay the course! Even if it takes 100 patches"
etc etc - You know you want to!
SimpleSurvival Apr 23rd 2008 3:35PM
If they subsidized epic mounts, they'd have to implement a Guild Bank tax... then we'd get into the dirty matter that the highest guild tax bracket would be the guilds still working their way through 10 man content while the guilds with BT on farm would be practically untaxed....
Stupid trickle down economics
Don't even get me started on the tariffs they'd have to place on the neutral auction house... Cross Faction trading would need strict oversight to prevent the wealth from leaving your faction.
Then there'd be the matter of property tax, you think repair bills on your epics were bad enough...
Guilds could deduct repair, pot, and reagent costs from their income (loot), but your average independent contractor wouldn't have a full time guild officer to fill out the requisite tax forms necessary to maximize their deductions.
If a guild ever went into deficit due to excessive wipes then they'd have to declare bankruptcy (/gdisband) and starting over. The govt would seize the contents of the guild bank and put it on the AH it off to pay the outstanding balance.

Simple, that brightened my whole day.
