I would just like to point out the degree of QQ we get because one paladin tree isn't raid viable. For starters, most ret paladins appear to live in fear of being forced into the holy tree and away from the front lines of a fight. But we have a perfectly viable tanking tree which most rets don't seem to have heard of.Ret paladins are simply the most defense players out there. Every class has its own source of bitching and moaning but because you're only capable of tanking AND healing and not melee dps is not a source of complaint. Roll a rogue, its the only thing they can do. If my rogue put on a bunch of feral leather and I started calling myself a tanking rogue would Blizz eventually listen? Because that's what retadins seem to have done.As a player of a combat rogue and prot pally I can say that if you want to see huge damage, play a class that's MEANT TO DO BIG DPS. If you want to be a versatility to your group and get invited to EVERY raid, play a hybrid class.I also want to address some of the outrageous claims in a few of the above posts. Top damage in your raid? Good job, I'd gquit on the spot. Every class has dps capacity so it's possible to level the character. If your tank/heal hybrid is the main source of dps then your guild needs some serious reworking. I leveled as ret and I know the abilities and limitations of the spec. Ret dps is a joke but you may be dragged along to a raid as a buff machine but that's honestly because your guild can't scrap up a decent enhancement shaman or fury warrior.

Top damage in an encounter is reliant on several factors. It can and does happen that Retribution can dish out massive DPS, specially in single-target encounters (specially if you didn't bring a Rogue). Ret DPS may not be top-tier -- it can under the right situations -- but to call it a joke is a disservice to the class.

Most ret pallies have heard of Prot, you can say the same as Fury/Arms Warriors wanting to DPS in raids. Why I am ret, I like my 2H, I like to see big numbers, And I hate spamming. I opt to not spam flash of light, and I opt not to spam consecrate thank you very much.

I skilled retadin can dump massive DPS, at least at the beginning of a single-boss fight. But even with threat improvements, it's still a liability. My last GM said to me, after I used the term "loladin," "You can keep saying loladin, if you can out DPS me on this fight."After the boss was dead, the meters showed I barely squeaked by him in DPS. (I'm a rogue) But while I survived the entire fight, he only lasted 2.5 minutes. His DPS, while impressive, was short lived since he pulled aggro, and the boss turned him into a pile of hamburger. So, I guess I'm still biased against ret for raiding. Spec prot or holy, and leave the DPS to other classes.

Paladins were melee fighters, and certainly not heal bots.
Every class has its own source of bitching and moaning but because you're only capable of tanking AND healing and not melee dps is not a source of complaint.
Yet, the Paladin forums are always complaining about it. If I payed $15 just to get into a raid no matter what spec I was then that'll be fine. Problem is that I like to have fun when I play games and healing and tanking isn't it. If Paladins could only heal or tank then nobody would roll them. Eventually people who've played Diablo 2 and other MMO's get drawn to the class and level it, only to find out that Paladins suck ass. This is pretty much what people think of when they roll a Paladin.http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/paladin.html
Roll a rogue, its the only thing they can do. Many hybrid classes pre-tbc would be dps spec but also perform their healing or tanking rolls. Even Blizzard didn't expect many players to reroll other dps classes, though they think Death Knights will fix the tank issue.
I also want to address some of the outrageous claims in a Top damage in your raid? Good job, I'd gquit on the spot.
Realistically my guild hardly ever brings rogues. We bring them when our usually classes don't show up. The Rogues hardly ever beat the Ret Paladins in dps as is, so they're hardly desirable. Not saying that Rogues can't dps, but it's hard to find a player that can play them properly.
