The fastest way to play Arena PvP
We've covered the topic of keyboard turners before, but Paul over on LJ has a similar distinction between control schemes -- he set up a spectrum that has clickers (or those who click all their icons with the mouse) on one end, and pressers (what he called "experts," though that's a little too biased for our tastes) on the other -- those who use the mouse to control movement only, and hit keyboard buttons to use abilities.Personally, I do a mixture of both -- some icons, especially on the top rows, are easier to reach with the mouse than on the keyboard, so I click them. But most of the lower icons are easier to just reach up and click the number buttons on the keyboard, so that's what I do with those. Still Paul isn't really interested in the ways people do it -- he's interested in what's best. In Arena, getting abilities cast and out as fast as possible is often more important than anything else, so it definitely seems like relying on the mouse for movement (and maybe even binding oft-used abilities to mouse keys) would be much faster than clicking on icons periodically. Of course, there's always the option to do both at the same time.
It would be interesting for sure to see what kind of schemes and setups winning Arena teams use -- I'd imagine that they'd have to play with default interfaces, so while keybindings and macros would probably work best, they wouldn't be able to go too overboard with customization. At the highest levels, is it faster to click and press or just use the mouse for movement?

OK, I realize I'm weird, but I map all my important skills to the NumPad and surrounding keys (Ins, Home, Page Up, etc.) and Ctrl/Alt variants (Shift doesn't work with NumPad). Buffs are usually mapped to the punctuation keys on the right of the keyboard, like the brackets or apostrophe keys.
I am mostly a keyboard turner, but I can move my hand to the mouse to quick-turn if need be. It's not the best, but it works better for me than standard number keys did. I would like to try an n52 though.

The best? Get yourself a Belkin Nostromo n52te game controller. 14 keys at your fingertips, as well as jump (space), Esc, and AWSD-related movement with a pivoting wheel (that you assist with your mouse).

One word: Nostromo

I, too was, until recently, an avid fan of the n52. Recently, however, I have switched to the Saitek Cyborg Command Unit (lame name, fantastic keypad). More keys, more flexibly programmable movement (I have my analog stick set to jump at 55% on the y axis and forward at 90%), and the ability to shift without losing a valuable key. The saitek isn't for everyone, though. It's less intuitive than the n52 and more delicate (I can see my wife breaking the analog stick clean off).
Either way, keypads are the way to go. Tons of buttons and movement control trump wasd (even if you do keybind everything) any day.

i use a nostromo as well. Unlike most, I have the D-pad bound to CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and WASD mapped into the keypad, with 1-6 mapped around that. works well enough for me. I click for stuff like Shadowmeld or buffs.

All this talk of keyboards - let's not forget the humble mouse! I have a logitech laser mouse that has an extra mini-button to the left of the left mouse button, a scoll wheel that tilt-clicks from left to right, and two buttons reachable with my right thumb. This gives me five extra buttons I can map without losing any functionality here. The extra mini-button is right there and so easy to press, so it's Blink on my mage, for example.
I then bind all the other abilities to Q, E, R, F etc as well as shift, ctrl, and alt modifiers for each. Just map strafe to A and D, it's all you need. I use a bar mod that lays out the buttons in a way that makes sense so I don't forget which key does what, and have the option of clicking if I need to. Another huge improvement for me was binding targetting to the mousewheel (I use ctrl-mousewheel for the old "zoom adjust") and this frees up TAB for binding as well.

If you can't move and click faster than the GCD then I guess you need keybindings. Clicking is much more efficient imo.

I think it depends on practice and class, some classes cant get efficient with clicking like hunters or some rogue specs, while others can easily get away with it if the player knows where each boton is to click it fast.

I'm a clicker, and move with my keyboard. I love the logitech laser mouse. No problems, everyone's play style is different and unique. I used Mazzle UI small button close together needing linited mouse movement, untill 2.4 hope to again if it ever gets updated. I love PVP and even though my Arena scores don't reflect me in the best light, because I'm always helping my friends get there games in. If punchers think they have superiority, meet me outside Org and I'll give you a run for your money. lol Happy gaming
