The future of trinkets
A little earlier, Eliah mentioned the world first M'uru kill by SK-Gaming. What caught my eye was a particular item that dropped off of the poor Naaru: The Shifting Naaru Sliver. This item doesn't yet appear on Wowhead or Wowdb quite yet, but the spell effect that accompanies it is.It caught my attention because it made me think a little about future itemization. Most of the trinkets in Magisters' Terrace and the Sunwell Plateau have little effects that basically do the same things as other items, but they're done in slightly more interesting ways. There are a few that are almost entirely unique of course, but overall, they're just new ways to do old things. Personally, I adore it and can't wait to see Wrath trinkets and rings.
The Shifting Naaru Sliver in particular caught my attention, because the way it's phrased is so different from other On Use trinkets. It implies that only the caster of the buff gets that buff, so overall, it's the same as something like the Icon of the Silver Crescent. The spell is pretty unique though, so it might be an indication of more widespread applications of this sort of thing later. Being able to flesh out your spell/buff repertoire via a necklace or a ring would be pretty interesting! I suppose Leatherworking Drums do something similar, but this excites me a little more for some reason. Perhaps in Wrath raiding, we'll see people gearing up to complement their party's damage as well as their own moreso than we see currently, thanks to item buffs like these. We'll just have to wait and see.

it seems to me that if they're going to limit where you can use the "Use" effect, they should take the restrictions off of who can use it - if the power-spot was usable by anyone, it'd be a cool new game mechanic, but as it is? it seems more like an annoyance.

Doesn't only the person *with* this thing actually get the buff? Its hard to say form the wording of the spell, but it doesn't sound like party or raid members get anything by standing in the circle.

It's a pretty "new" mechanic, as far as its usage on trinkets, but the Power Circle sounds like nothing more than a personal totem to me. Not that I wouldn't be happy to have something interesting and unique, instead of simply "Use: Increases [stat] by X for Y seconds."

yeah, more stratholme trinkets!
where is my fel cannon summoning trinket?

It's probably a turn to do something like what they want to do with locks in wrath. I think they're making it so that locks can summon power circles that they would be more powerful in, or that they can summon their demons faster. This is probably the trial run for a mechanic like that. It would probably take quite a bit of raid management to get 5 people to stand in this circle though. That being said, if 5 people have this ring and chain use it, it'd probably be WAY op.

Well it also restricts the trinket for PvP, allowing them to make the on use effects more powerful for PvE purpose.

I wouldn't say it restricts it for PvP, maybe limiting it's usefulness for some people. If you are flag defending, you are not going to move around much anyways (if you are a smart player) as you don't want to get lured away. It may even act as an extra "deterrent" to a incomming attacker. Do they 1) attack you while you stand in the Power Circle, or 2) move away and wait for the Power Circle to fade away, tho giving your team that extra 15 seconds to respond.
Tho, not knowing how big the circle is, puts a big hold on the debate. Depending on how big or small it is may make a difference.

According to http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=45043 the radius would be 5y if I'm not interpreting it wrong.
If I'm playing my mage in PvP I rarely stand on the same spot for more than 2.5 sec, but I see that other classes might get more out of the on use effect.
Also I'm not saying that the trinket is bad for PvP, since it has 54 spellhaste rating on it, just that you won't always get the full benefit out of the on use effect.

I am pretty sure you misinterpret the use description, Alex, if you think only the trinket wearer gets the buff. "while standing in this circle the CASTER gains..." to me means that everyone who casts a spell within the circle (and who but casters would get spell damage?) will get the buff. if they meant "the trinket wearer" they would have said so. Furthermore, what would be the point with the power circle at all if only the trinket wearer gets the buff?
To me it also seems like they are using the same mechanics that some of the mobs in MrT use when they cast those spell dampening bubbles, further an indication that anyone who is inside the bubble will get extra spell damage (maybe even mobs).
Murmillos May 4th 2008 7:47PM
'the caster' implies singular use. Meaning only the bearer of this trinket would get benefits. Blizzard is very keen on thier wording.
Nothing in the whole structure of the sentence leaves any indication that it's a party/group/for others buff.

"Being able to flesh out your spell/buff repertoire via a necklace or a ring would be pretty interesting! "
You already can with some of the jewelcrafting necks, they're blue but interesting.

So basically, its like a self use Spotlight like like the Stagehands leading up to Opera use. I know when those pop up, I make a bee-line for them.
