Rogue tanks Black Temple boss Mother Shahraz
The guild Shards of Existence on the Illidan server hasn't managed to down Illidan himself yet, but apparently that hasn't stopped them from having a little bit of fun with the other Black Temple bosses. According to their site, they've been having a bit trouble with tanks losing their computers, which has in turn frustrated their attempts to put Illidan on farm status. But just because they're still getting their replacement tanks geared up doesn't mean they have to sit back and wait.
Introducing Gaeowyn, The first Rogue to tank Mother Shahraz, the harem mistress of Black Temple. Notes Nihilum's news site, she pulled it off by stacking massive amounts of agility, while keeping enough expertise to cause adequate threat to keep the boss' attention. Raid buffed, she had 76.31% dodge, 12.16% parry, and 14.16% chance to be missed, meaning that she had 102.63% avoidance - just enough to take physical damage out of the equation.
If nothing else, that alone makes me wonder if I could pull that off on my Druid tank - It certainly would make tanking Prince Malchezaar's phase 2 easier. Of course, Bears cannot parry, alas, so I'd have to make up some major ground somewhere.

The video is a fun watch, especially at the end where it looks like Gaeowyn tries her hand at tanking Illidan. Is this a sign that we can expect Rogues to be fighting with Paladins, Druids, Warriors, and Death Knights for tanking spots come WoTLK?

You forgot to mention Warriors. I guess all that drivel about warriors being abandoned was true after all.

Nah, I just forgot to add them, sorry. I put them in now, just for you. :)
Daimon May 5th 2008 10:22AM
I was going to say the same..., you left out the tanking class for excellency; is funny how ppl claim they can tank this and that with their druids and paladins, yet the first kills in new bosses are with warrior tanks most of the time; is when the raid feels more comfortable when they use the other classes. Grats on the kill but we won't see many cases like this regularly.
Valkry May 5th 2008 10:28AM
It's because the feral druid you bring to the raid is much better at dps in cat form that the prot warrior in fury gear. And pallies are good at tanking trash & adds :)

That was a 'Freudian slip' if I ever heard one. (Or you can call it a parapraxis if we want to be literal.) Warriors are on their way out, and there is no shame in leaving them off the list anyway. Come the expansion, when they add yet ANOTHER tank class, you'll be seeing fewer and fewer protection warriors tanking. So I think it was more accurate before he made the correction.
When even a rogue can tank an end-game boss, a protection warrior is really a has-been when it comes to tanking.

I wonder how much crit the rogue had with all of that agility.
Arvenis May 5th 2008 10:37AM
I looked at the WowArmory page and they only had 23% crit. I don't have a rogue but most of my Mage's crit comes from crit rating and very little from Int. I imagine it's the same for rogues with agility and crit rating.

Thank you, Gaeowyn, not for the unfortunately non-masculine sounding name, but for showing the world that we rogues don't always have to do it from behind!!
As long as we get buffed before-hand, We can go as long as tanks!!!!!
^_^

That's fantastic.
I can only imagine what that's like for 15 seconds at a time. Dodge dodge dodge dodge dodge dodge whack, dead.

With all due respect, it was a d-bag dedication. I certainly don't dedicate each key I make via blacksmithing to all the rogues I know because I am trying to make them obsolete.

Wouldn't a rogue like that be able to tank a boss like Gruul with 0 healing required?
Narugh May 5th 2008 12:21PM
Sharaz dual wields, which means she has a lesser chance of hitting than normal.
Talys May 5th 2008 3:11PM
@Narugh: Sorry, but boss mobs (or any mob in the game for that matter) do not work that way. Boss mobs have a base 5% chance to miss you when they attack, and that's it. Doesn't matter if they're dual-wielding or not.
Sonmerlong May 5th 2008 9:38AM
I am at loss as to how he acheived such a large amount of chance to be missed
idburns May 5th 2008 9:40AM
I don't know what's lamer...that Nihilum's website is now a source of news or the super 1337 mousepads and horribad "gamer" headphones that they are sponsored with...

We already don't have enough tanks! This is awesome, congrats to her (I assume the player behind the toon is a female too)!

Can't you just feel the hate?
Why do other classes hate each other so much? I love playing with my friends, and learning all the different class abilities. But as soon as someone does something that raises an eyebrow/unprecidented people jump on them and start whining that they are out of a job.
JOB... that is really what it is... instead of enjoying it and celebrating each other's victories/successes, so many people turn Emo about how they will be phased out or how they are nerfed and such allows this kind of thing to happen.
I can't believe the word vomit I am about to say... lrn2play. I hate that phrase, becasue I am no guru in the game, but I enjoy playing with my friends.
This feat shows an incredible amount of dedication and research to see if it was even viably possible in the first place.
Just because someone had the foresight and opportunity to try this, doesn't mean y'all need to turn into haters!

It looks to me like they're going to remove the ability to become passively crush immune (and therefore, physically immune) in WotLK. Take for example the buff all mobs in Sunwell has:
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=45769
"The warm radiance of the Sunwell empowers the target, increasing its chance to hit increased by 5% and reducing the enemies' chance to dodge by 20%."
It was most likely put in to prevent becoming passively immune. But when the gear reset comes, Blizzard can prevent it from the start. If so, no more rogue tanks. Unfortunately, since "outside-the-box"-solutions are always fun.
Congratulations to her anyway! Now we just need to get a Priest to tank something....
Nati May 5th 2008 10:24AM
Actually, they're probably going to remove crushing blows completely in WotLK, or tone them down. They've said several times that they're unhappy with the randomness of them and that they don't add much to boss fights but frustration. Sunwell Radiance is there because itemization got out of control.
Talquir May 5th 2008 10:54AM
Yeah, you're right, I forgot that Sunwell mobs don't crush at all. And yeah, rogue becoming physically immune goes into the category "itemization got out of control".
I'd still like to see a priest tank, though.
