WoW Rookie: Pre-Burning Crusade endgame reputations

WoW Rookie is brought to our readers to help our newest players get acclimated to the game. Make sure you send a note to WoW Insider if you have suggestions for what new players need to know.
For the last couple of week's we've been discussing reputations here on WoW Rookie. By leveling up reputation with factions you will open yourself up to special content, rewards, and discounts. Last week we examined some of the factions encountered while leveling from 1 to 60 in Azeroth. Some people still rep up with these factions, but for the most part these NPCs have been pretty lonely since the expansion.
When the level cap was at 60, prior to the Burning Crusade, players spent a most of their time at level 60 repping up with PvP and raid factions. Many players gain reputation with these factions for the right to purchase crafting patterns from their vendors.
The crusaders of Argent Dawn encourage players of both factions to fight the Undead Scourge and the Burning Legion. You often begin repping up with Argent Dawn around level 50. Reputation with this faction can be gained by completing quests, turning in Scourgestones collected from the Eastern and Western Plaguelands or from Stratholme and Scholomance instances. Scourgestones are only available to players who have the Argent Dawn Commission trinket equipped.* Pleasant, and non-bind-on-pick-up, items such as Crypt Fiend Parts, Bone Fragments, Cores of Elements, Dark Iron Scraps, and Savage Fronds can be turned in in stacks of 30 for reputation gain. By gaining reputation from this faction players earn the right to earn Superior and Epic Armaments of Battle.
You may become involved in an on-going war between troll clans. Players side with the Zandalar Tribe by vanquishing their enemies in twenty-person raids in Zul'Gurrub. Reputation is often gained by turning in Tribal Coins and Bijous that are looted from deceased members of other troll factions. Coins are not bind-on-pick-up items and in the heyday of pre-BC raiding they were often sold at auction prior to the burning crusade. In addition to epic gear, each level of reputation with the Zandalar tribe entitles the player to purchase a very special necklace for their class and some armor enchantments.
The Druids of Cenarion Circle (affiliated with the Cenarian Expedition in Outland) fight to protect nature from evil forces inhabiting the environment in Silithus. You can also gain reputations with
The Brood of Nozdormu hate you, but you can change that, by reengaging in the War of the Shifting Sands. You can win their graces by killing monsters in the (20 person) Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj (AQ 20) and the (40 person) Temple of Ahn'Qiraj (AQ 40).** These instances start off as closed on a server, but the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj are opened as players complete a number of quests. Unless you're on a brand new realm, the gates are probably already open. By completing quests for the Brood of Nozdormu players win the opportunity to win fabulous prizes (also known as epic armor). The good news is, as Bronze Dragons, the Brood of Nozdormu are really cool looking.
You may also rep up with the Elemental Hydraxian Waterlords. I'm not quite clear on the lore of this faction, but it's another chance to rep up for epic loot rewards. Early quests for this faction include environment quests in Sithilus and the Plaguelands, as well as Blackrock Spire instances. Reputation with the Hydraxian Waterlords is primarily gained by running the forty-man Molten Core instance, and killing Duke Hydraxis' sworn enemy Ragnaros. In addition to reputation rewards, killing bosses in Molten Core gives players access to Tier 1 dungeon loot.
A typical pre-Burning Crusade raid progression would go through twenty- and forty-person raids in increasingly difficult order. Each increasing level of difficulty required better and better gear. Essentially it was kind of a vicious spiral where players would gear up to run instances that allow them to gear up for the next instance. Typically a guild would warm up by running Zul'Gurrub and AQ 20, followed by AQ 40. As members got better gear they would move toward Tier 1 gear in boss mobs in Molten Core. Tier 2 gear dropped from Ragnaros in Molten Core, Onyxia's Lair, and Blackwing Lair. Tier 3 loot was awarded by running Naxxramas, a forty person dungeon above the Plaguelands.
I speak of these in the past tense as they have been largely forgotten since the release of the Burning Crusade Expansion. This is what most players spent the vast majority of their time doing when the levels were capped at 60 and players were limited to Azeroth. While some players still run these raids for nostalgia and occasionally gear, sadly they usually just collect dust. At this point this is mostly a history lesson, just as Karazhan, Serpentshrine Cavern, and the Black Temple will likely be after the Wrath of the Lich King is released. Remember that at one point in time these instances were as exciting and new as the Sunwell.
* Remember that you should swap out your Argent Dawn trinket for something more useful when you are not in the Plaguelands.
** Scarabs dropped in the Ahn'Qiraj raid instances are turned in for quest and reputation rewards for

AQ40 was inbetween Tier 2 and Tier 3. C'thun dropped items on the same ilevel as some Naxx bosses.

Just one note: AQ40 came after Blackwing Lair in raid progression. If you tried to go to AQ40 with ZG and AQ20 gear, you were in for a long night of wiping.

And it was unlikely a guild not clearing MC was going to get down the last boss in AQ20. Or Be able to kill Jin'Do in ZG for that matter.

Groups I would love to see given the faction treatment:
The Earthen Ring (As a Horde-only Cenarion lead-in.)
The Night Watch (As an Alliance-only Argent Dawn lead-in.)
Also, I'd love to run Naxx. Apparently there is a Horde-side guild doing Naxx runs on Zangarmarsh, I just need to get this paladin to 70 and decently geared.
Lori May 6th 2008 1:11PM
Yes, someone is organizing Naxx runs on Zangar-horde. They are only taking lvl 70s and, of course, you need to be attuned. They have been advertising in chat. I believe the next raid is planned for May 10.
I was all excited untill he told me about the lvl 70 requirement with me at 62.
ILikePvPbuthatePvPers May 6th 2008 6:49PM
The Earthen Ring would be neutral. They accepted Broken and Normal Draenei Shamans into the order in Outland.

I think all the AQ gates are now opened on all new servers. Bummer, as I never got to experience that.

Engame, or "End"game"?

This article would have been better written by someone who had actually experienced the content rather than guessing about it. Hydraxian rep was for an item you needed to summon Ragnaros, as well as a fire resist ring. Thats about it. The worst part about that was the Lord Hydraxis was in the middle of the ocean off the coast of Azshara, a looong swim just to talk to him and go back. And as mentioned, AQ40 is after BWL. You could also get Brood rep by participating in the Gate opening event for AQ40. Not by being the lucky guild that did the opening, but killing spawned giants around silitus for the 12 hours or so after the event. I stayed up all night with my guild killing spawns to get enough rep to get the epic ring in one sitting.
OK enough reminiscing ;) Wow Rookie is a good concept but it helps to have some veterans doing the explaining.

Also, WoWiki has the raids listed in their sidebar in order of progression for pre- and post-BC.

"Essentially it was kind of a vicious spiral where players would gear up to run instances that allow them to gear up for the next instance."
What's different now? Run 5-mans for gear to run Kara for gear to run heroics for gear to finish Kara to get gear to run Gruuls and Mag to get gear to run ZA ... and so on.
darian May 6th 2008 12:08PM
The lines of progression aren't quite as clearly drawn in BC as they were before, particularly with the removal of attunements.
For example, a lot of people will go kill Rage Winterchill now before they down Vashj and Kael. People skip Al'ar and Hydross to fight Void Reaver and Lurker. That kind of hopscotch wasn't possible previously.
To boot, there's also badge gear. While it doesn't fill in all holes, you can gear yourself quite nicely without raiding.
I don't really count PvP gear in this. Depending on your class, the stat distribution on PvP gear ranges between "sub-optimal" and "outright blah" when it comes to PvE. You can, perhaps, jump start your raiding with PvP gear, but you can't really supersede progression with it.
Skuling May 6th 2008 10:58AM
I miss the old days... waaay more epic than this BC stuff
Draelar May 6th 2008 11:19AM
One important thing about ZG is that the head enchant you can get there is still (one of) the best ones in the game for warriors.
Aislinana May 6th 2008 11:40AM
I'm going to have to agree with others and say that the person doing the rookie column should be a veteran, or at least someone who can fact-check.
jrb May 7th 2008 6:52AM
it's aimed at rookies, not veterans, as such, and as someone that only got as far as UBRS in oldeworld before taking a 2 year break, i found this and the ones that came before in this series very useful.
shame there's no the interest in the classic wow content as there was back then, i find it far more appealing than outland.
Aislinana May 7th 2008 7:21AM
@JRB:
I said a veteran should write it, considering that some of the facts about the reps are erroneous, despite the fact that anyone could browse WoWwiki and get something accurate.
heath May 6th 2008 11:45AM
Its not just the head enchants. For enchanters, the Brilliant Oils from Zandalar rep (mana at Friendly, wizard at Honored) are still great money makers and the best oils in the game. ZG is still a great run for off-days. Making a bee-line to the raptor boss is fun (can be easily 4-manned with T4ish lvl 70's) as he drops both a shoulder enchant token as well as the raptor mount (it actually dropped the first 4man I tried, but lost the roll by 1 :(
Also:
Argent Dawn rep: The Revered trinket (+dmg to undead) is still great for KZ runs. I used it up until I go the VST from VR in TK (so it'll last you up till T5 content).
Cenarion Circle: I may be wrong, but I believe the tailoring recipe herb bag (24 slot) is still the best in the game.
Glenn May 6th 2008 1:28PM
Word, Heath. You are spot on. That herb bag and the Brililant Oils definitely make these factions relevant post BC in my opinion.
sentrosii May 6th 2008 12:02PM
I agree with #9.
Also, I thought some of you guys went to Blizzcon! Unless Blizzard decided to throw this idea out (which I haven't heard about), Naxx won't be collecting dust for long.
WOTLK is coming with a new and improved Naxx, and it's going to rock. :)
