Spiritual Guidance: Priestly tips for Mount Hyjal

Our Priest column is back! Every Sunday, Spiritual Guidance will offer practical insight for priests of the holy profession. Your host is now Matt Low, the grand poobah of World of Matticus, and this week he's written different "If" statements to follow.
Summer is almost upon us and I hear Mount Hyjal is lovely this time of year! Honestly, I believe everyone playing right now needs to go in at least once and just experience the place. It is essentially the successor instance to Black Morass with multiple incoming waves consisting of various Undead trash. Not since Karazhan have we Priests needed to utilize our Shackle Undead extensively in another raid environment.
The latest patch has opened the raiding doors wider and allowed more players to experience some of the most complex encounters in the game. This week, I'll help walk you through Mount Hyjal and offer some advice and tips in what I consider the most punishing raid instance devised.
Before going in
Be prepared: Have your standard Priest raiding loadout ready. In addition to your flasks, food, and pots consider packing along some Light Feather in the event you get to Archimonde. It's use will be explained later.
Be prepared - mentally: I said it earlier but I'm going to say it again. There's a reason why this raid instance is the most punishing. You will face waves and waves of Undead. If your raid wipes at any point, you start back at the first wave. Believe me when I say it can be mentally taxing.
Shadow resist: You might find having a few pieces of Shadow Resist helpful. I went in with a Medallion of Karabor and Night's End. Combined with the Shadow Protection buff from Priests, it added up to 150 Shadow Resist. With luck, you've been able to do the quest required to get the neck.
PvP Trinket: Get your Medallion of the Alliance or Medallion of the Horde to help break the Icebolt spell from Rage Winterchill and to break Fear from Archimonde.
Trash
Shackle Undead: There are a few waves where you need to use your shackles. Your raid leader should be the one determining what gets shackled, but shackle duty should go to Shadow Priests since they're likely to have some hit. Prioritize Banshees over Abominations for the waves where both show up. If not, shackle the Abominations if the raid needs it done.

Rage Winterchill
PvP Trinket: If you get hit with an Icebolt, this is the time to use it. This frees you from the trap.
Death and Decay: Circle of Healing Priests, get ready to spam that spell on melee DPS who get caught inside.
Anetheron
Positioning: Try to space yourself and the rest of your healers around Anetheron in equal intervals around the boss.
Shadow Resist: Equipping the cloak and the neck allows a chance to mitigate some of the damage done to you.
Kaz'rogal
Mana management: Don't go overboard with heals right away. Ensure you have your mana regeneration buffs and consumables ready. Try to stay above 3000 mana as much as you can. If you end up below 3000 mana, turn around and run away from your raid before you explode.
Azgalor
Shadow Resist: Equip your Shadow Resist gear. It's got a chance of resisting the silence effect which I've found to be quite handy.
Trinket: If you have a Vial of the Sunwell on you, it's another excellent trinket option for those desperate situations when your tank is low and you're unable to get a heal off.
Archimonde
Don't forget your tears!: Talk to Tyrande and get the Tears of the Goddess. However, you can be like me and cheat and carry a stack of 40 Light Feathers. This allows you to Levitate down in case you use your tears too early.
Fear Ward: Work it out with the other Priests in the raid to figure out a Fear Ward and trinket order. You want to ensure there is a healer available to help support your main tank on Archimonde until the fear breaks. If you want to be real fancy, try to time a Mass Dispel on your group to coincide with the fear.
And that's all there is to it! Hopefully these tips will serve you well when you work your way through this instance. With luck, you won't have to go through the walk of shame too much (it's what I refer to the run back from the graveyard). May your loots be phat!
Want to find more great tips for carrying out your Priestly duties? Spiritual Guidance has you covered -- before the long hiatus, we looked out an introduction to playing a Priest and different types of healers. And don't forget to check the WoW Insider Directory for more priestly info -- there's lots of guides, writeups and discussions over there as well.

Begone with you, viscious troll of goldsellers
Nice article, Matt.
The Archimonde Fear situation is a complicated one to describe to those who have not witnessed it.
My guild brought 2 Spriests and 3 Holy/disc priests just for him, to handle the 'Psychic Screams'

You forgot about MC'ing the shadowy necromancers and giving unholy frenzy to your melee. That be the most important job imo, rofl.

i love wiping in MH. it gives you another shot at trash drops that are just as good as boss drops.
our guild has been farming the trash leading up to the first boss repeatedly, just to get the trash epics. we kill the boss eventually, but typically the epics that come from that are vastly overshadowed by the epics from the trash.

A good tips is to stand close to Jaina Proudmoore when you can to get Brilliance Aura.
Brilliance Aura: Increases spirit for all friendly units within 30 by 100%. http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=31308
This is my spirit stats in there :)

Now, consider the Spirit of a human priest (10% increase) with Spirit of Redemption (5% increase) and you'll know why I'm giddy during the first half of Mount Hyjal.
My raid teases me for being a Spirit fiend. I don't care -- it's awesome stuff post-2.4.

My guild has being raiding MH for a while now whilst I've being dealing with some rl issues, but now its (mostly) sorted I wanna get back to being a full time raider (holy / spirit specced) My guild mates tell me that I should have at least 9.5k buffed health for this but I'm stuck with ZA / Kara gear and a couple of bits of T4. I'm thinking of trying to get some PvP gear together to up my stam but is this the only real option? They don't really do SSC or TK any more and I can't find anything worth while from badges :/

equiping a bit of shadow res at kaz'rogal can also help alot with resisting the mark

"The latest patch has opened the raiding doors wider and allowed more players to experience some of the most complex encounters in the game."
How so? I know attunements were lifted, but in order to get to Mount Hyjal, you still have to have t4 gear... Kara didn't get any easier, it just let you skip the attunement quest. You still need the same gear level, though.
Other than that, very good article. I've been going through and taking a look at the old leveling guides here, I really wanna get my priest up.

*trying to take a look at the old leveling guides. I missed a key word there. This post was hinting something.

Don't underestimate the badge loot at all. The first round of badge loot was poorly itemized and had really odd bonuses, but 2.4's badge loot is absolutely divine. They really have the stats that I personally consider very necessary for the healing priest (Stamina, Spirit, Intellect, Bonus Healing).
For example, consider the Gown of Spiritual Wonder (2.4 Badge loot) with Robes of Heavenly Purpose (Zul'Aman):
+38 Stamina
+35 Intellect
+50 Spirit
+118 Bonus Healing
(1) Red socket
versus
+21 Stamina
+23 Intellect
+45 Spirit
+101 Bonus Healing
(1) Yellow socket
(2) Blue socket
Pre-socketing, you're looking at +14 Stamina (140 health), +12 Intellect (180 mana and 0.15% Spell Crit), +5 Spirit, and +18 Bonus Healing. Each of the main badge loot pieces (Slippers of Dutiful Mending, Adorned Supernal Legwraps, and Gown of Spiritual Wonder) show similar improvements -- and sometimes more. I know that I spent my badges on those three pieces, quickly discarding the equivalent Zul'Aman and Tier 4/5 pieces that I was wearing before.
The only piece that I'd advocate not getting would be the Gavel of Naaru Blessings. Though it's VERY high on Stamina, Intellect, and Bonus Healing, it lacks the Spirit that I fell is very important for priests post-2.4. I'm still wearing my Ethereum Life-Staff I acquired from Solarian. My gut feeling is that the badge mace is better itemized for shamans and paladins as opposed to priests and druids, but the lack of Mp5 might make even those classes reconsider. However, if you've got the badges to burn and you're still sporting either the Shard of the Virtuous or Light's Justice, this is a notable upgrade.
Concerning PvP gear, I have a full set of Season 2 gear that I use for both PvP and times when I need the added health for an encounter. Keep in mind that the gear is itemized for PvP, which means that it spends a lot of points on Stamina, Intellect, and Resilience, while disregarding Spirit and even Bonus Healing. All of my PvP pieces are stacked with Stamina gems (Arena rule of thumb for priests is to stack Stamina until you reach 10,000 health and then stack Resilience), so I can hit 10,000 health unbuffed on command. What I tend to do instead, however, is switch out a couple of high Stamina pieces for encounters where I feel it is warranted. That way, I gain some much-needed health while retaining some of those stats that keep me a viable healer.
Hope my comments help!

Bah, that was intended to be a reply to Sapkira's question, but the damned thing didn't reply. I hate the comments on WoWInsider sometimes. So irksome!
Sorry for the confusion!
Eternalpayn May 12th 2008 7:57AM
If you're running Firefox with NoScript, you have to 'temporarily allow WoWinsider' before you press reply.
Sapkira May 12th 2008 11:06AM
Wow dude, thats really useful, my crappy maths shows that most of the badge stuff will give me +5 or so stam per piece on what I'm using at the moment but I guess that I could be wrong.
I'm still stuck with the Lights Justice from prince but I have managed to get my mits on the Staff of Dark Mending from Zul'Aman (worth using?)
Cynra May 12th 2008 2:07PM
My current employers are antediluvian and have forced me to browse the internet with IE, Eternalpayn. That's not the issue at all, but thanks for the heads up!
Sapkira, it's always a pleasure providing more information to people. I'm an avid theorycrafter and a priestaphiliac; I've leveled four priests to 60 or beyond to date and currently have three priests on the Feathermoon US server. My main raiding priest is 23/38/0, my PvP priest is 42/19/0 (though I always go back and forth on doing 45/16/0 due to the changes on Reflective Shield), and I have an itty bitty Shadow priest who really needs some leveling lovin'. This doesn't necessarily make me an extremely knowledgeable player when it comes to priests, but it does mean that I enjoy talking to other people about the class to learn more!
Some numbers that might help you when deciding which piece of equipment might benefit you more:
* Each point of Stamina yields 10 health points.
* Each point of Intellect is 15 mana and 0.0125 (1/80) Spell Crit.
* The benefit gained from each point of Spirit is dependent on both your current Spirit and Intellect, but you gain 0.35 Bonus Healing from each point of Spirit with Spiritual Guidance and Improved Divine Spirit. (you mentioned that you were a Spirit priest, which typically means at least 23 points in the Discipline tree!)
Let's take a moment to look at the Staff of Dark Mending (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33490), Lights Justice (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28771), and Gavel of Naaru Blessings (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34896).
Staff of Dark Mending:
+46 Stamina
+47 Intellect
+407 Bonus Healing
(1) Red socket
(1) Blue socket
(1) Yellow socket
Socket Bonus: 9 Bonus Healing
Light's Justice:
+16 Stamina
+21 Intellect
+20 Spirit
+382 Bonus Healing
Gavel of Naaru Blessings
+42 Stamina
+28 Intellect
+464 Bonus Healing
First thing to consider is that with a mace you'll have an offhand. If you're pre-T5, you probably snagged the pre-2.4 badge loot offhand, Voodoo Shaker (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33325). Let's add that to our list:
Voodoo Shaker:
+18 Stamina
+20 Intellect
+25 Spirit
+55 Bonus Healing
That changes the numbers of the one-handed maces above:
Light's Justice (with offhand):
+34 Stamina
+41 Intellect
+45 Spirit
+437 Bonus Healing
Gavel of Naaru Blessings (with offhand):
+60 Stamina
+48 Intellect
+25 Spirit
+519 Bonus Healing
Also, let's consider gems since Staff of Dark Mending has them. Optimal gems right now for healing priests seem to be Sparking Empyrean Sapphire (10 Spirit), Teardrop Crimson Spinel (22 Bonus Healing), and Luminous Pyrestone (11 Bonus Healing and 5 Intellect). I'll admit that I sometimes replace my red gems with purple gems, such as the heroic gem Blessed Tanzanite (11 Bonus Healing and 6 Stamina) or Imperial Tanzanite (9 Bonus Healing and 5 Spirit). We'll stick with the norm for now because I don't know if you're actively farming heroics for those gems and because I'm lazy. Whee!
Staff of Dark Mending (gemmed):
+46 Stamina
+52 Intellect
+10 Spirit
+449 Bonus Healing
If you use the offhand and gem as noted, the probably clear cut winner is the Gavel of Naaru Blessings. It has the highest Stamina (60 Stamina yields 600 health), highest Bonus Healing at 519, pretty decent Intellect (48 is 75 mana and 0.60 Spell Crit), and has some Spirit with the Voodoo Shaker. However, that requires 150 Badge of Justice and you'd probably be better off using those to purchase your armor for better suited priest upgrades.
Barring the Gavel of Naaru Blessings, I'd probably stick with the Staff of Dark Mending as gemmed above (or something similar). It has more Stamina than the Light's Justice (which appears to be a big concern for you), higher Intellect, and higher Bonus Healing, though the lack of Spirit (10 to Light's Justice 45) makes me cry. Then again, I'm an avowed Spirit fiend between the human racial bonus and Spirit of Redemption and am clinging to my Ethereum Life-Staff from Solarian until it gets pried from my dead body -- or I switch to my higher Bonus Healing gear.
It should also be noted that I didn't factor in the Bonus Healing gained from Improved Divine Spirit and Spiritual Guidance. Remember that the buff and the talent allow you to gain 0.35 Bonus Healing from each point of Spirit you have. Also, with my current gear and stats, I gain about 1.04 mana regen OO5SR (Out of Five Second Rule) with each point of Spirit I have. As I noted above, the amount of OO5SR mana regen you get from Spirit scales with your Intellect, but I believe it caps around 1.04 (which is what I have now). I can't remember offhand the relationship, but if it comes to me before I leave work for the day or if I stumble across it while waiting for this database to update, I'll let you know!
As before, I hope all of this helps! I love me some priestly discussion! Also, if I made any errors in my hasty reply, anyone is free to correct me. That's always appreciated.

Be careful about using spells that slow your rate of falling. Archimonde can spell steal your Levitate (and mage's Slow Fall). We just had several casters find that out the hard way last week during our first stab at Archimonde.
