Racism in arena names
I think there are few things more disturbing in the modern world than ill-conceived notions of racial, religious, and sexual divisions. For some reason parts of humanity continue to believe that just because one group or another looks and/or acts differently, they are bad. One of the reasons I enjoy WoW and just games in general is because it allows us to escape the problems this world gives to us, even if only for a few hours a week.Unfortunately, some people find it necessary to bring their attitudes in game. We've covered some of this before, from border-line inappropriate arena names to sexism in WoW. However while playing an arena game recently fellow writer Amanda Dean came up against a team named "Rosa Parks Stole My Seat," and this name is possibly the most offensive one I've seen. Rosa Parks (for those of you who need a history lesson) refused to go to the back of a bus because of her skin color and continued to sit in the white only section of the bus, despite being told to do otherwise. She represented a key moment in the history of civil rights.
There are 65 arena teams with this racist name.
When Amanda ran into one of the teams she reported it via a GM ticket.
The GM escalated the ticket, which I'm sure was the right action on the part of the GM. However as is usually the case we don't, and won't, know exactly what happened to the offending team. This is due to privacy policies Blizzard has in place. What we do know however is that there are plenty of other teams out there that have this and other racist names. Furthermore, the team that Amanda reported is still listed in the armory (as of 11:30 p.m. on the evening on May 12th).
The writers had a discussion last night about this name, and it was brought up that people have these names on mainly defunct teams – which appears to be true. They have them there so they can "be cool" with their racist friends and have something that produces a lot of shock value.
People rarely see these teams in action, so the problem goes by unnoticed.
Except for the teams that are sitting at a high rating, such as the 2153 rating team from the Dethecus server. Or the team that played 344 games so far this season. It strikes me as deplorable that people would see this and turn a blind eye to it. Do we not all have a moral imperative to end racism, or any other isms, when we see them? Especially if the solution is as easy as filing a GM ticket.
Please try to do your part and keep this game free of such trash. If you see things like this, report it to the GMs.

I say things like this to my friends of every color every day. Guess what?
- I Don't get "Jumped"
- laugh about it with them
- Play wow with them
Not everyone is ready to fight you over a comment. You sound like you live in a scary part of town.
Get some friends of color and you will see they are just like you.
jake May 13th 2008 4:12PM
The people who do find this offense don't have black friends, but desperately wish they did, so they can be exempt from being called racist. In the meantime, PC posturing will do.
grab May 13th 2008 4:16PM
@Naix:
Bravo! The only people who would find this offensive are people who don't have friends of a different race. I'm white and I showed this to 5 of my black coworkers and they all had similar reactions: it's hilarious.

@Naix
While I agree with you and I feel the same way, the problem is not everyone in WoW is your friend. They don't know that you're just joking. Your friends do. The problem is that there are morons in the world who find this funny because they think, "LOL, civil rights".
Matt May 13th 2008 3:15PM
if they think its soo funny to see reactions, it makes me believe they dont care about the feelings of others, or if it will offend someone...thats just as bad as doing it because you believe it...
Germ May 13th 2008 3:16PM
It is offensive and shouldn't be tolerated. The thing is all these immature people and secret racists let loose on the internet or in MMOs like WoW, they are anonymous so they do it and don't feel bad about it since no one will get in their face as would happen in the real world.
I'm hispanic and I've seen some people say some racist s**t about hispanic people so I whisper them and let them know what they are doing and depending on how they respond to me, that's when I decide to report them or not.
I'm glad there are people out there that see the wrong of these peoples actions.
Glen Hays May 14th 2008 3:44AM
You people are way to oversensitive and PC. The Rosa Parks team names are in poor taste, but hardly overtly racist. It's not like they are spamming racial slurs or the like.
Really, get over it.
ikono May 13th 2008 3:25PM
Ahahaha, that's awesome. Personally, if people can't look back on history with many different viewpoints, they aren't human. My favorite part about this is people who get so butthurt over it.That's the only reason why people do stuff like this; to get a rise out of people like you. The most mature thing to do is to just ignore them. Let them have their fun. What gives you the right to determine what morals people have to live by?
Holyer-Than-Thou May 13th 2008 3:18PM
Oh please. You people need to lighten up.
Out of the 10 Arena teams named "Kill Whitey", how many do you think have African American's on them? The point is to have a stupid name that elicits a reaction. I don't think they are being intentionally racist. They just aren't old farts that are too wrapped up in being Politically Correct.
Shofixti May 13th 2008 5:25PM
OMG there are 10 arena teams called that, lol. I am white, and I do not find an imperative to murder people of my race to be either racist or offensive.
What else are arena teams for except to exact bloody victory through swift and murderous tactics? Gotta get psyched somehow. I can't believe all these people are upset over Rosa and are happy to turn a blind eye to this call for race-based killing.
However in real life I may find it disturbing. Escpecially on a T-shirt in south auckland.
Scelerat May 13th 2008 3:20PM
Sometimes people are just overly sensitive and can't appreciate a good pun. I'm not saying this is the case with 'Rosa Parks Stole My Seat' or similar names, but when my mage got reported for having the 'sexist' name of Frostytute, I mean, really? Sexist? I fail to see how having a punny name means that I hate women or some such.
Manatank May 13th 2008 3:34PM
The worst part is the person reporting it was the sexist. Somehow associating prostitution exclusively with women is very offensive. It is offensive to men like me who never get taken seriously no matter how many dudes we blow for $20.
Stephen Bick May 13th 2008 3:39PM
so, your a prostitute and want to be taken seriously
how can you expect people to respect you when you dont respect yourself?
Manatank May 13th 2008 3:51PM
And what about prostitution involves a lack of self-respect? Self-righteous jerk.
John Woodard May 13th 2008 3:21PM
Racism is, and always will be, a part of this generation's life. It wills still play a significant if further reduced role in the next generation's life as well.
You cannot make someone who is racist not racist. They will not be swayed by truth, logic, pressure or sanction. How many racist people have friends that are of the race they hate? Over half, I'd say, omitting only the truly hardcore.
I agree with reporting names like this to GMs, but It's debatable whether writing articles about it is constructive or destructive.
If you don't like racism, there is only one thing you can do: Do not teach your children to be racist when they are young, and when they are old enough to ask you about it, explain it in no uncertain terms. Don't sugar coat it.
It does not even occur to my 4 year old that the black family living next door is in any way different from him. He's never even pointed out the difference in appearance, and he notices and points out EVERYTHING.
Personally, you can only call me racist if you declare "Stupid" to be a race.
Joe P May 13th 2008 3:23PM
You're going to get two types of reactions to this post:
1) People who agree with you and think this deplorable
2) People who say "Stop QQing, this is the interwebs, grow a spine"
To the first group of people, I agree.
To the second group I say the following: while sometimes it is interesting, entertaining, and even daring to make light of certain ethnic and social boundaries (just look at late night TV) one must consider how tasteless the act is. Though SNL may do a skit about stereotypical black people or flamboyant gays or snooty whites it is meant as a sort of satire and is (usually) not meant to imply that the show itself is racist.
The internet however has been able to write the book tasteless hate by providing a mask of anonymity so that people are free to share their vile views without having much concern that it will come back and haunt them. Long time users of the internet have grown more and more tolerant of this simply because it seems there's so much of it. However I submit to you that there are still people who are offended by it and there are many more that SHOULD be offended by it but simply aren't because they have grown so numb to it.
Now I don't meant to sound like I'm ranting and raving that the internet is evil, but I have to say that there comes a point when we must really consider what it has become. The fact that there's one team named "Rosa parks stole my seat" is bad enough, but 65? Are you KIDDING me? Do you even have the slightest notion as to who Rosa Parks WAS? Still is? How different the world would be if she had not refused to give up her seat and here you make light of it? Take your racist trash somewhere else, but not in my game.
Heilig May 13th 2008 3:39PM
"Though SNL may do a skit about stereotypical black people or flamboyant gays or snooty whites it is meant as a sort of satire and is (usually) not meant to imply that the show itself is racist."
You can't possibly be serious with this argument. You can't say "Well, SNL doesn't really mean it, it's just a joke, but those random middle class white kids playing a video game ARE RACIST AND SHOULD BURN!"
These kids think they're being silly, or cool, or funny, or whatever. They're not racist, they're just kids. Real racists wouldn't have a team name called "Rosa Parks Stole My Seat." Racists in this country aren't that smart. Their team name would just be outright hate, not punny, or silly, or clever in any way. And BTW, they most likely would not be playing a game full of jamaican trolls, gay blood elves, russian draenei, and greedy goblins.
Use your heads, people. If you don't like it, report them. I just ignore them, it's not my job to go on a crusade against stupidity. This is just nanny state mentality at its finest. Do the people named Private Partzz and Johnholmes offend you too? What about the NPC named Wing Commander Ichman? Then report them too. Enjoy your feeling of rigtheousness. I'll be busy lowering their arena ratings and enjoying playing the game.
Suzushiro May 13th 2008 4:03PM
The fundamental issue here is that if the team name was a play off of the accomplishments/life of a *white* historical figure then this wouldn't be considered half as offensive. That's a HUGE problem with our society, and the exact kind of attitude that the people who make these team names are rebelling against. The idea is that the same rules are supposed to apply to people regardless of race or gender or whatever else.
Pzychotix May 13th 2008 3:42PM
You, sir, is why they do it. These posts of you getting enraged, is why they do it. There's something carnal about enjoying another's pain. It's the same reason why people grief.
And you know what? They don't give a crap about you. It is the internet, and honestly, it should be expected of it. Get over it.
Jagoex May 13th 2008 4:03PM
@Suz
Okay bud, I'll bite.
"You're such a jew."
Oh, but it's not a racist statement because it's about white folk, is it?
