Main hands and one-hands after 2.4.2
I only slightly mentioned this back on the podcast, I think, but there was a fairly interesting change that snuck in the patch notes on 2.4.2: lots of formerly main hand weapons have become one-hand weapons. There are a couple of theories poking around about why this could be -- dual wield is first and foremost, of course, as this change allows classes who dual wield, including Rogues and Enhancement Shammies, to have a little more choice as to what weapons they can use. Death Knights will also be able to dual wield in the expansion, and this will open things up for them a bit as well. And Blacksmithing weapons were apparently changed as well (in addition to losing their "unique" status), so Blacksmithers have a little more leeway, too.But there is one thing that, according to Blizzard, will always keep weapons in one-hand status. Caster stats, according to both Drysc and Hortus, will mean that weapons will always stay one-hand. So feel free to do as much switching around as you want in terms of speed and melee damage, but there'll be no stacking of healing or spell damage bonuses (with Shamans or Death Knights).
Which isn't really a big loss -- it means that Blizzard has much more leeway in creating healing and spell damage weapons than they do while making melee weapons. But it does mean that if you want to play around with weapon combos, you have to go melee -- healers and casters get to choose one and stick with it.

"Caster stats, according to both Drysc and Hortus, will mean that weapons will always stay one-hand."
One hand? I think you mean main-hand

Yes he probably means Main Hand.
This is clearly one of the first steps towards WotLK. If you remember, they will make gear suitable for more classes/specs comboes in order to shrink the loot tables. Having a weapon fit either hand certainly does pretty-much halve the amount of weapons they need to design for dual-wielding melee classes.
This to me, is the reason, more than anything else.

So a simple way of helping shaman actually get arena viability is not allowed. The spec was not as efficient as a full enhance build or elemental build and yet they refused to allow it to be used at all.
I love Blizzard. If it would help a shaman it has to be imbalanced.

This could actually be because the DeathKnight may excel where the Shaman is only marginally buffed in an odd vanity-spec. Imagine a full spell-dps DK dual wielding two Prince's Mindblades each with +40 enchants, or something similar.

I knew about the Main Hand one hand switch, but I want to know when off hand weps will be available as one hand. I would love to get a Gladiator's Quickblade for my tank.

"Death Knights will also be able to dual wield in the expansion, and this will open things up for them a bit as well."
Whoa whoa whoa. Wait.
I thought it was established that Death Knights were permitted only to use two-handed weapons.

Now where did you hear that ... it has, pretty much always, been indicated that a DK will be a Dual-Wielder.
Actually, that would be the way they tank. ie, they will Tank by building threat through damage dealing, pretty much the same way a Druid does.

Thanks Cal ... I actually realized my oversight when I read the WOW Wiki article about the DK class last night. My understanding was that they would not use a SHIELD, which for some reason I expanded upon, in my mind, to include "off-hand weapons." My bad.
You're right. Their ability to hold aggro will depend largely upon damage.

To be fair though, this isn't a rogue change at all. Rogues use a slow main hand for high crits and a fast off hand to proc extra attacks, sword procs and poisons. The change was made for enhancement shamans who need two slow same speed weapons and fury wars who like to change weapons for recklessness executes and such. Plus of all the weapon smithing things the only thing a rogue could use is the 1h sword.

As my enhancement Shaman hit 70 last week I really looked forward to this change.
But now that 2.4.2 is live I still have to see that a main hand weapon has changed to one hand.
Fist weapons like the Reflex Blades are still main hand the last time I checked.
Has anybody actually seen this change on a weapon?
pudds May 16th 2008 9:48AM
Fist weapons seem to be an exception, probably due to graphical considerations (they tend to be designed for left or right hand use).

Yeah. I noticed a 2% increase in DPS by using Dragonstrike in my off-hand instead of Netherbane. If you haven't got much in terms of Haste, behold my enhance shaman brothers and sistas.

@ Calminaion:
Idk where you read that dual wield is the way DK tanks due their dps aggro like druids... so having a prot tree with taunt spell and +aggro talents won't have nothing to do with that right? I've seen 2h ret pallies hold aggro rly well using 2h. pls don't assume before hand.
thebitterfig May 16th 2008 11:14AM
well, that stinks. as i see it, if a shaman wants to invest 31 points in enhancement to dual wield, they should be able to grab some extra spell damage or healing, seeing as they gimped their restoration and elemental talents.
seems like a fair trade-off, so lame on bliz to prevent such a character in order to prevent possible problems with a future class...
and i really wanted to try a flametounge weapon shaman who stacked spell damage!
JWR May 16th 2008 12:35PM
One major implication of this is that Death Knights may conceivably be able to use a tanking weapon in their off-hand, and a spell dmg weapon in their main hand, for benefits to both defense and threat while tanking. Expect lots of tankadins --including me :)-- to be insanely jealous.
