Breakfast Topic: Did Age of Conan pull you away this weekend?
Funcom's Age of Conan opened yesterday to those who pre-ordered. Considered one of the two MMO's this year that has a chance to take a chunk out of WoW (Warhammer Online being the other), this newest entry into the overcrowded fantasy genre officially goes live on Thursday, but Early Access was granted to those willing to lay out the cash. Now, I'm not fool enough to predict that AoC will take down WoW, but I do believe it will take a chunk out of WoW's playerbase in the short term. There is a malaise setting in among WoW players and guilds now that we are in the long wait until Wrath's launch. And nothing kicks you out of gaming doldrums like something new and shiny (not to mention bouncy and bloody.)
This morning we ask you not if you are leaving WoW for AoC, but if you are indulging in a little weekend sideline fun in the lands of Hyboria. Or have your stalwart guildmates suddenly disappeared yesterday?

Nope - I have a Mac and the AoC people aren't as smart as Blizzard to tap into that market...

I'm a PC user through and through. I get into countless debates as to whether Steve Jobs is an evil villain and whether Macs are really better or just shiny white plastic. But that's really beside the point.
That having been said: I won't be playing AoC (in part) because I know my friends can't play it with me. It sucks that they have to make such an effort to make it work for two systems. I am aware that resources devoted to this sort of thing (making it work for apple computers) are, consequently, not devoted to other things.
It sucks, but I want to play with my friends. That's how MMORPGs work. /shrug

Um...Hello...run windows on your Mac silly
SaintStryfe May 18th 2008 8:11AM
It's cute that they made an obscure set of novels and an Ahnuld movie into an RPG.
As usual, being a Mac user, they don't even get my consideration for not even considering making a Mac version.

You are funny...did you know that the Conan lore is over 75years old? Wowtard.
SaintStryfe May 18th 2008 8:34AM
That whoosing sound you heard and that breeze in your hair? That's the point escaping you.
Did I say it wasn't old? I inferred that I didn't think very much of it, regardless of age. Beside, Lord of the Rings isn't new either, and we see how well THAT worked out as an MMO.
Beside, as I noted, I'm a "Wowtard" because the dullards that make these other games won't work with my Operating system. I'd gladly look, but if they can't take the time to the second leading OS, I'm not taking the time to boot into Windows to play their game. It's just silly.

It's people like you who give mac gamers (like myself) a bad name.
SaintStryfe May 18th 2008 9:05AM
Zwwel: My apologies, but I don't follow.
I'm a Mac Gamer. Not a Windows-on-an-Apple Gamer. I can't play games that aren't released for my OS. I make it known when there's game I'd like to look at (as I did with AoC, even if I don't care for the universe), but they don't port or make a native Mac version, I'm not going to give it much care.
I'm a big Blizz supporter because they work so diligently to not only develop for the Mac, but advance its programs with great functions (like the video capture feature in the Mac version).

The point is, you called it an 'obscure set of novels' when Conan is actually one of the most enduring fantasy properties of all time. I understand and sympathize with your point about them not making a Mac version (Mac user here, too), but you utterly fail when you ridicule Conan.
As much as I am not interested in playing the game (and obviously can't), I wouldn't be so quick to belittle fantasy Literature's most popular and iconic barbarian. It's just disrespect to Robert E. Howard.
Eternalpayn May 18th 2008 12:28PM
You act like it takes one click to port a game to Mac...
Tristan May 18th 2008 4:13PM
I don't have a mac, but last I checked, now that it's intel, Wine will run on a mac.

you will be back, you will ALL be back
Prometheus May 18th 2008 8:29AM
I haven't played it this weekend, but I have pre-ordered it, and will be playing it instead of WoW for a while. Probably play both simultaneously the rest of the summer. Bye bye life!
alittan May 18th 2008 8:46AM
Not gonna play it, ever. I prefer the cartoony graphical style of WoW. Besides, I'm not even sure my laptop can handle it. Realistic Mmorpgs = not my thing.
C.A. May 18th 2008 8:49AM
I'm just sick of the tons of AoC threads on the WoW forums.
Yaimano May 18th 2008 8:55AM
I thought the game was meant to be pretty average? Of course last time I heard feedback would have been in some early beta.
Ryan May 18th 2008 9:00AM
Right now, my budget affords me WoW. Paying what I would assume to be $60 Canadian + monthly fees for an MMO, just doesn't grab me. All the other MMO's I've played I've either beta'd, or played at a friends house or trial'd.
WoW, so far and for the last 4 years, has managed to keep me consistently interested and happy.
I will wait it out and see what the general verdicts are. Last MMO I tried when it was new was Vanguard and well....we all know about Vanguard.

Erh, dude, the canadian currency has the same value now.
