Forum post of the day: Epic Battleground Loot
I've heard some amazing stories about what people have done (or not done) in favor of World of Warcraft. I have to say Lils of EU: Windhammer's story takes the cake. The tale, told by her boyfriend Artimis, describes how she went into labor while playing Warsong Gulch and continued to play until the battle was complete. 12 hours later the couple became proud parents of Hayden. We've heard about weddings, proposals, deaths, and divorces, but a WoW birth is pretty darned epic.
The forum thread had many supporters and detractors for this behavior. I have to agree with Mankirk of Daggerspine "Putting WSG before child birth is pro..." While many believe that the first stop should be the hospital, in this case the new mom was advised to stay calm at home as labor progressed. Nightkestrel of Vashj staunchly defended the couple's labor management decision. Childbirth is an intensely personal thing, and this story has a very happy ending.
Congrats Lils and Artimis, and welcome to the world Hayden! Be sure to check out WoW Rookie every Monday.

How strange, i log on to the site because i had the chance since my son was born on Sunday the 18th!
It was just the Doc wanting the wife to stay in the hospital to monitor Diabetes, and after i had went home and to bed, only to wake up (i live in Germany) and do a SSC run the wife told me all is good, and i went in when the hospital was open. Turns out tho, the wife had been in somewhat of a "labor" for 2-3 weeks, and not 15 minutes later after she hung up with me and i got there, i came into an empty room and the nurse pulling me to the delivery room!!! But over all since this all started she still stuck through the WOW with crazy contractions the past few weeks!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!! NOW START HIM A CHARACTER AND START TRAINING HIM!! LOL!!

I think, as a woman, you kind of know if you need to hurry to the hospital. Seriously, the kid wasn't born until 12 hours later, what's the rush?
Dan May 20th 2008 5:35AM
Not always, a relative wanted to go back to bed, she was feeling nauseous and really didn't want to go to the hospital at that point. 2 hours later she had given birth (at the hospital luckily). Apparently you get nauseous when the child is in a certain position, which happens very late in the labor process. You'd have to have a very easy birth to not want to go in to the hospital earlier than that though I'd reckon.

oh great, now they only have 7 more character slots left. What happens when they want to roll a Death Knight??

Only a hospital is equipped to deal with emergencies and in the case of heavy bleeding, no one can drive to the hospital fast enough. Childbirth should not be considered a personal thing because such idiotic personal decisions like this are potentially leathal to the infant.
Most of the time home births end up just fine. But a single child killed because mommy was too busy with WoW is unforgivable.

Hi!
Not really any of your business, so I think be supportive or don't bother. Why get involved if you're just going to trash the happy parents?
I find it interesting that women are meant to be independent and empowered these days but as soon as she misses a period society thinks it has the right to advise, control and dictate.
Thanks for stopping by though,
G

1. This baby is STILL ALIVE!
2. It was obvious that there was not that much bleeding, otherwise people would have rushed her to the hospital, or better yet "called the paramedics"
Just because you are trying to make a (quite nice actually) experience something that they should be ashamed of is hilarious, personally I think it will be a great little story to tell the family when the kids about 20 ;D.

Sometimes people drive drunk for hundreds of miles without causing any accidents. Infact most of the time when people drive drunk, nothing at all goes wrong. I think it's outrageous then that just because you get a car and are suddenly responsible for more than just yourself, society sees fit to dictate your freedoms.
Just because something ends up ok doesn't mean that the initial decision wasn't profoundly stupid and irresponsible.
Karpax May 20th 2008 7:42AM
This argument sucks donkeyballs...
You compare driving to giving birth?
The only reason you want to be in a hospital is because something could go wrong and then you might need a doctor.
The kid will be born anyhow...
In Holland, (which is, despite common beliefs, actually a pretty advanced and civilised country) it's pretty common to give birth at home. They just call a midwife that comes around to see if everything is gonig as it should...

I can't be more agree with you, giving birth is a serious thing, and even though the mother has to be relaxed, IDK how a game who rises your adrenaline would do the job.
Congrats to the healthy child.

"1. This baby is STILL ALIVE!"
Yes the baby is still alive for now. Eventually this baby will die. Either by accident, disease, or just old age. No matter what the cause the outcome will be the same. Death.
Lars May 20th 2008 3:22PM
ermansup, I was born at home, you got a problem with that?
First of all, your rights end where my nose begins. Nobody has the right to dictate to me where I give birth. If I want to have a natural home birth that's my choice, not yours. And there is just as much risk to the child at the hospital, if not more. Yes, if there is a situation where the child may not have survived a natural birth then the hospital may help there. But usually those situations involve preemies or drug babies.
"such idiotic personal decisions..."
What the hell? Playing a game instead of twiddling your thumbs or staring at the ceiling doesn't seem horribly wrong to me --I guess I'm just crazy.
"a single child killed because mommy was too busy... is unforgivable"
I agree, but I don't see what that statement has to do with this situation. The doctors told them to stay home!

Damn... That BG welfare gear is getting better and better. I heard that your going to be able to buy [A Real Life] with honor points in Wrath.
Grats to the parents, hopefully they raise their kid right, as in, he'll be a tank that does PuGs for me. xD

The way you wrote about it I initially thought that the player continued to play a 12 hour Warsong Gulch Match (which is insane in and of itself) whilst being in labor. That is truly insane. Glad to see that the player wasn't nearly that crazy.

Ok here's the deal people. In early stages of labor, not much, if anything, is really happening ok? When I went into labor with my first child (I wasn't into WoW yet), I had a bowl of cereal, took a shower, shaved my legs, put make-up on, got ready for my big day, and even cleaned up the guest room for my parents. It is not that big a deal.
And yes my water broke was the first thing that morning. Even when that happens you still have several hours before possible infection starts to be come an issue. Just because you go into labor does not mean that automatically you are to be rushed to the hospital with intense contractions. Mother Nature has made natural birth for human a very gentle process. And no, I did not have an epidural or any drugs during or after labor and birth.
I did start to play WoW though a few weeks after baby was born, and it really allowed me to clock many many hours of breastfeeding and closeness with my new baby. I could either play WoW and breast feed or watch tv and breast feed, I chose WoW.
Now my boy is almost 3 and he is very happy, healthy and well-adjusted. SO people, just chill out. Just because mom played WoW does not mean she is a bad mom. My main playing times are nap time and after bedtime. I never neglect or ignore my child. And I would expect many other WoW moms to be the same.

Kudos to a responsible parent :D

ROFL at comments. Hey guys, shut up. K? Everything ended up ok, and I don't see how sitting and playing the game for 30 minutes, (Or less) was so "dangerous".
In other news, thats no welfare epic, thats a welfare LEGENDARY. (Story at least.)
Punky May 20th 2008 12:45PM
The worst is going to the hospital when you're not quite ready and having the doctors talk about sending you home...might as well get some WoW time in while you wait...
In both my cases, I went into labor when I'd ordinarily have been asleep, but I'd have to agree that the WSG story is mighty epic.
Vaiden May 20th 2008 11:08PM
My husband and I were in Molten Core 19 months ago when I went into labor. We both stayed in the raid and played until the contractions were so bad that I couldn't actually play any longer (couple hours). Shortly thereafter, we headed to the hospital and found out I'd dilated 4cm during the course of the raid. 6cm later, we had our little Stephen. He's going to be his mommy's gatherer when he's old enough. ;)
Haden May 29th 2008 6:05PM
OH he has the same name as me. Well they sound the same. my grandma did some stare thing in the March of 1991 and told my mom to make it Haden not Hayden she said something about the stars saying its unlucky having a kid with a Y in his name during the March of 1991. If you asked me thought I would rather be unlucky as apposed to having the inter world make me feel like I have a misspelled name LOL. Haden spelled backwards is Nedah a some what unknown girl’s name.
