Well, if rep was easy then the rewards would be sub par. You get what you earn. Rep is not a nescessity, it is a bonus for hard work. Don't get me wrong, the rep graind is not an easy thing. I have done the rep grind to Aldor exalted, back to Scryer for the Alchemy recipe and Runic Thread pattern (because my character was an Alch/Tailor), and now I am making my way back to Aldor exalted because I changed the Tailoring to Jewelcrafting. You have to plan and calculate to get rep needed at the right time. This to me is a side game, a side adventure.
You will get the gear soon enough. The gear comes really at 70 anyways. Get the quest gear to get you to 70 and get through some of the instances for end questing. You only really need Honored status for the heroic key and that comes easy by questing.
The way I look at it is this:
Rep grind is for those special things (items, patterns, recipes) that are not really a deal breaker for getting to end game. They are bonuses to make your character even more special. If you want it, go out and get it.
