WoW Rookie: Mount up!

UPDATE: The magic number is now 20! Read our updated version of mounts for the leveling player.
In the World of Warcraft, 40 is a magic number. Once you hit this level you get access to a 31 point talent, which usually does some pretty nifty things for your class. You really start specializing into your role as a healer, tank or DPS character. The best part about 40 is getting your fancy new mount. Once you get used to traveling the world on you pony (wolf, nightsaber, raptor, ram, etc) it can be really hard to go back to hoofing it on foot.
First you have to be prepared to get your mount. Warlocks and Paladins have it easy, they are given class mounts that they can train like any other spell or ability. These mounds have the same speed boost as the mounts for purchase, but they look really friggin' cool. The rest of us have to open up our wallets quite a bit for the right to ride. That's alright, Warlocks and Paladins are in for quite the challenge if they want their epic class mounts. Here are the standard racial mounts:
Mount |
Race |
Faction |
Trainer Location |
| Horse | Human | Stormwind | Eastvale Logging Camp, Menethil Harbor, Southshore, Theramore Isle |
| Kodo | Tauren | Thunder Bluff | Bloodhoof Village |
| Mechanostrider | Gnome | Gnomeregan Exiles | Steelgrill's Depot |
| Nightsaber | Night Elf | Darnassus | Cenarion Enclave |
| Ram | Dwarf | Ironforge | Amberstill Ranch |
| Raptor | Troll | Darkspear Trolls | Sen'jin Village |
| Skeletal Horse | Undead | Undercity | Brill |
| Wolf | Orc | Orgrimar | Valley of Honor |
| Elekk | Draenei | The Exodar | Exodar Entrance |
| Hawkstrider | Blood Elf | Silvermoon City | Silvermoon Entrance |
You may purchase mounts from other races in your faction by gaining in an exalted level of reputation. Beware though, Tauren characters are limited to mounts that can hold them, and Mechanostriders only carry Dwarves and Gnomes.
Mounts themselves are cheap. You can expect to pay about 10 gold for one from your racial mount vendor. The expensive part is the riding skill. At level 40 it will run you in the neighborhood of 70 gold. You can up your skill at 60 for about 500 gold, then again at 70 (to learn to fly) for about 900 gold. Epic flying skill puts a serious dent in one's piggy bank at about 5,000 gold. The first two ranks of riding can be purchased at a discount from your riding trainer provided you've leveled up your faction with them. Ranking up in riding skill offers you access to faster mounts. You do have to buy a new mount, an expert riding skill will not make your level 40 mount move any faster.
Skill |
Level |
Cost |
Type |
Speed Boost |
| Apprentice Riding | 40 | 90 (81 Honored) | Standard Land | 60% |
| Journeyman Riding | 60 | 600 (540 Revered) | Epic Land | 100% |
| Expert Riding | 70 | 800 | Standard Flying | 60% |
| Artisan Riding | 70 | 5000 | Epic Flying | 280% |
Saving for a mount is often a primary concern for players. For most people who already have level 70s the cost of the regular riding mount on an alt is usually a drop in the bucket. Many players are still challenged by the cost of acquiring their epic flyers. As you near level 40 or 60, take a look at your cash flow. You may need to make adjustments to your spending and selling habits to make enough for your mount. Auctioning off the spoils of gathering skills (herbalism, skinning, and mining) can help new players secure the funds necessary for a shiny new rides.
These are the standard mounts. There are many other specialized mounts in the game. Adam created a guide to mounts in WoW. If you're looking for something a with a little more style, check this out.
Once you've got your mount, there are just a few more things that you should know. You have to purchase both the skill and the mount. Once you've acquired your mount you will be given a token to place in your backpack. Clicking on this summons or dismisses your mount for you. You can also dismiss your mount by clicking the buff icon near your minimap. You cannot cast spells while mounted. I leave the autodismount option enabled so that when I'm mounted and cast a spell I get knocked off my ride, but the spell still goes off.
For the most part, mounts can only be used outdoors, with a few exceptions like the Undercity. If you run into a building (or sometimes even too close) you will be dismounted. You cannot summon your mount in combat, so you would have to break combat in order to use your mount as a getaway vehicle.
Till next week, ride safe and keep it rubber side down!*
* "Rubber side down" is a common parting remark among motorcyclists. It is also sometimes uttered at "Rubber side down, shiny side up."

with mounts, after spending so long getting my 2nd level 70... the worst thing had to be getting the flying mount.
I got my epic flying mount on my main character so long ago [about 11 months, probably] and now I've just got normal flying on my second.
Oh wow... it's so slow, it's painful. I can't remember how I coped so long ago

I do believe epic mount + training costs 595 gold at revered?
Dan May 20th 2008 5:19AM
Yes, the training at revered should be 510g IIRC
Zeplar May 19th 2008 8:55PM
Unless you're a druid and it costs... 6g for a flying mount =D

"Warlocks and Paladins have it easy, they are given class mounts that they can train like any other spell or ability."
Clearly, you have not tried to drag people to DM to finish the quest chain for the warlock mount, post-BC. Also, I'm fairly certain I spent more on the various mats for the chain then the total to just buy a "regular" epic mount.
Having said that, Warlocks and Pallys do have the *coolest* mounts. :)
Lhock May 19th 2008 10:09PM
Paladins indeed have it easy, but its not exactly free. The mats on the auction house are kinda pricey. Warlocks do not have it easy it all. The quest has you running all over the damned place, and getting people to help with DM is near impossible. Not only do you have to go to DM, you have to clear the entire instance.
I was 70 a long time before I got my warlock mount. My paladin was 60 and paid a rogue a 20g tip and had his mount easy.

At least the Warlock and Pally mount quests are still justifiable, post-BC because the mounts are still desirable even to an epic'd out lvl 70. Why can't hunters have their own epic quest to "tame" their own mounts? I'm quite sure the lore would allow them to quest for their epic land mounts, too. My (foolish) wish is that the epic hunter quest would still be beneficial to a lvl 70 hunter—in this case, an epic ground mount.

He clearly states you have to work for your epic mount..

Hunters can tame pets, but not mounts... seems wrong. And I've said it before I can skin yetis but not gnomes... again, it seems wrong.
I miss the days of Plains striding...
MechChef May 20th 2008 12:48PM
Surely, hunters deserve more of this game to be pureed and spoon-fed to them.

This is actually not that hard, my main a Dwarf Warrior has all 5 races mounts, the only one that took some time was the mechanostrider. Of course that was the one I wanted the most.
Oldbear May 20th 2008 1:28PM
I ground rep to get the undead with my BE, I'm about 1000 rep away from my raptor now too. What self-respecting BE would want to ride a techno-colour chicken?
Keni May 19th 2008 10:50PM
Can Blizzard implement a new way to grind pre-BC city rep (ie Orgrimmar, Stormwinf, Thunder Bluff, etc..) ?
Kinda feel jiffed that when my undead rouge's level 40 and when I was thinking of getting a hawkstrider to ride on, only to find out that you need to be Exalted with Silvermoon for it!
Would be nice if 'Honored' reputation would be the minimum requirement for other race mounts so people can get a variety of mounts when they hit level 40.
Magma May 19th 2008 11:33PM
I wouldn't put it so low as honored but I think revered would be good for mounts.
Farrell May 20th 2008 5:54AM
it's easy to get pre-TBC city rep. My tauren had a wolf mount by level 50.
You do the relevant faction's starter quests and ones in that area - normally nets you quite a bit of rep - then use runecloth turn ins to get the rest.
Soriel Angelfyre May 20th 2008 6:42AM
the amount of rep you get for doing the early quests for any of the factions does not change (even if you earn almost no exp due to your level) i had a similar issue on my mage, i honestly hate the hawkstriders, and wanted an undead horse, so after about an hour of doing quests in deathknell, brill, and undercity at level 40 i got enough rep, also consider that when you earn rep with one faction you get trickle down rep for the others, thanks to doing the undercity quests (as well as the silvermoon ones when i was leveling) by level 60 i had a high enough rep to choose from an epic hawkstrider, epic skeletal horse, or epic wolf (actually got the horse and the wolf, have a macro set up for random choices :D )

Almond Joys are epic.
ThorinII May 20th 2008 8:51AM
Almond Joys have nuts, Mounds don't. As a bi-female I know once told me, "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't."

If you want to get another race's mount at 40, simply do the quests starting at their home - as a Draenei I did Azuremyst and Bloodmyst Isle, then went back to Teldrassil and worked my way through to Ashenvale and beyond.
At 40, I had a NE mount - not once did I touch those godawful Elekks (the Kessel Run doesn't count).
