About the Bloggers: Alex Ziebart
Twice a week, our writers will tell you more about themselves, and let you get to know them and the characters they play a little better. Click here to read more About the Bloggers. What do you do for WoW Insider?
I'm primarily a weekend blogger for WoW Insider, but I also stick my nose in during the week when I can. I am also a columnist for Hybrid Theory and I take turns with Elizabeth Wachowski writing Know Your Lore.
For the Horde or Glory to the Alliance?
Glory to the Alliance! While orcs bug me for some reason I can't decipher, I don't really have anything against the Horde. I started playing Alliance because that's where my friends rolled and we started a pretty awesome guild there, so I stuck around and came to love it. If those people had rolled Horde instead, I might be playing there. Both factions have their own feel, and they're both very cool.
What's your main right now?
My main is a Human Shadow Priest on the Cenarion Circle server, just breaking into the Sunwell Plateau in 4 pieces of Tier 6(Mother Shahraz refuses to cough up the Conqueror). I do have quite a few alts that I play very heavily(such as my Protection Paladin), but my heart lies with my Priest. Most of my characters are female, but it isn't an aesthetic thing so much as a 'its cooler when girls kick ass' thing. Yes, I am a male despite what my avatar up there may tell you.
Favorite thing to do in Azeroth?
It's really hard to pick just one thing, and I don't think you ever really need to pick one. I don't like to PvP(because I'm bad at it), but I'm in a raid that is moving into Sunwell, I am a roleplayer, and I enjoy levelling my alts. I play WoW to hang out with friends, so anything can be fun in WoW if you keep the right people around.
What's the best instance in the game?
Overall, Stratholme. The lore, the gameplay, the environment, the fight with Rivendare... all amazing. When I'm on my Protection Paladin? Shattered Halls, heroic or otherwise. It's like a Prot Paladin Playground.
What's the number one thing Blizzard could do better?
Two things come to mind. First, differentiating PvE and PvP a little more. I don't mean stats-wise, I mean appearance or vanity. Additional titles, armor sets that don't just swap colors, that sort of thing. Someone who is rocking the brackets in the arena shouldn't look identical to someone who just banished Kil'jaeden and vice versa. They can both look awesome, but they shouldn't be identical.
Second, place more emphasis on the social aspect of the game. Take a few pages out of SWG's book. Things such as player housing, guild housing, taverns and pubs that are more interactive('live' bands, etc) would help this a lot. PvP servers may not care about these things(which makes it unlikely they'll be implemented) but they would strengthen RP servers a lot, and RP servers definitely need the help.
Favorite piece of loot?
The Shard of the Fallen Star from AQ40 is easily my favorite. It has become my raid's good luck charm. I equip it whenever we need a little edge on our first kill of a boss, and things always seem to come together. Coincidence and superstition, sure, but sometimes you need that false sense of confidence to pull it off.
What accomplishment in-game are you most proud of?
My guild, easily. We signed the guild charter only a couple weeks after the launch of WoW, and the guild is still going strong. I became the GM quite awhile ago, and I have a ton of support from the other guild officers. I'm glad to have these people with me. Additionally, we're part of a major raid alliance on our server. This is a point of pride for us, because most people are of the opinion raid alliances are doomed to failure. We've been going strong for a few years and there's no sign of stopping. We were once called "nothing more than a glorified PUG" so it's nice to be ahead of those people in progression now.
Hey, you have to be a little cocky about some things, right?
If you had 10 more hours to play every week, what would you spend them doing?
Probably the same thing I do now, just more of it. Roleplaying, levelling alts, brainstorming ideas for my next Know Your Lore installment, the usual.
When I'm not playing WoW, I'm...
Writing. I write a lot. I write for WoW Insider, but I'm also working on two fantasy settings of my own. A traditional fantasy setting, and an 'eastern' setting with elements inspired by China, Japan, Korea, and those regions. I think it's a lot of fun, we'll see where it goes. I'm hoping to turn them into a series of novels/graphic novels eventually, with RPG settings to accompany them. Kind of a distant dream at this point, but what's life without dreams?

In before flames about a male playing female characters.
Sean Riley May 20th 2008 9:01PM
I have to admit, I've really become a fan of Alex's during David's absence. I like David's columns a lot, but he's also got a very high-view take on roleplaying, with a lot of discussion of the principles but less on the techniques. (His "Roleplaying With Class" columns being the obvious exception.) Alex seems to have a more earthy, practicality focus. I think the two complement each other a lot, and I'd love to see them each get their own RP column.
Cynra May 20th 2008 11:28PM
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thought the same thing! I didn't follow Alex's writing too much before, but I sat up and started taking notice when he subbed in for All the World's a Stage.
And Stratholme has always been a favorite of mine as well.
Aislinana May 20th 2008 9:02PM
Oh my god. Alex is liek...so hawt. I want to have like ten trillion of his babies.
(Good interview :D )
BigFire May 20th 2008 9:05PM
Also the blogger who writes about protection paladin, without knowing the first thing about the class.

I really hope you're part Asian. There's nothing more annoying than a white person who thinks they can appreciate (or, dare I say, 'exploit') 'Eastern' elements - that it's not just because they like anime (blech!) or hope to hook up with Asian women.
Your 'girls kick ass' argument has to be one of the lamest ever. Personally, I just can't get wrap my head around the concept of playing as a female. I happen to be one of those people who thinks that guys who *complusively* roll human/nelf/belf/draenei females are hot for their toons. (I can understand if people who have a million alts and want to see things from a different perspective.) Just admit that you're one of those people. Don't worry, you're not the only one.
Other than that, great job on everything else.
Sean Riley May 20th 2008 9:51PM
Oh sure.
Y'know, it couldn't be at all the classic appeal of the strong female protagonist character. Couldn't at all be the fun of a classic fantasy archetype. Y'know, couldn't be one of any number of reasons for choosing a female character above a male one.
It's all about the hot butts.
Sigh.
Also, have you checked out Exalted by White Wolf? What's your opinion on that?
(I did like Jade Empire, but I acknowledge it's a sore case of exactly what you're talking about.)
Timothy W May 20th 2008 10:55PM
I personally cannot roll a female that I am gonna play past level 5. However, I can understand why some people want to play a Female, it's a hell of a lot nicer to look at for hours at a time then some guy.
Ancalimon May 21st 2008 2:23AM
i would find it very easy to appreciate asian culture and elements, its the same as appreciating someone that isn't yourself. you don't have to be of the race or background to appreciate anything. and what about those white people that study asian history and culture? would they not have an understanding of the subject? and i myself am in an inter-racial relationship with an asian woman. does that make me a bad person? would that be classified as a perverse fetish? or could it be that i actually enjoy the company and love this woman no matter her race and culture?
as for the "girls kick ass" argument, Sean, you put it perfectly... /applaud. i don't know exatly what your trying to emply with that comment, but alot of people find it refreshing when a woman or the underdog is the hero instead of the musclebound man (and no im not saying women are the underdogs, those are 2 seperate things).
bottom line is padoodies, think before you speak, otherwise you show your true intelligence, which doesnt seem to be much.
Ancalimon May 21st 2008 2:26AM
Oh, and Alex, Great job, keep it up!
SpaceDog May 21st 2008 6:46AM
Erm, I'm a guy, my 2 main characters are night elf and gnome males. My third is a female Draenai.
I'm not a girl. Neither am I a night elf or a gnome. Just leave others be.
Urthona May 21st 2008 1:20PM
I play on Alex and Daniel's server. My DK will be my Warrior's mom, raised from the grave. While I primarily play male toons, I admit the female animations have a different appeal, either aesthetically or contextually. I take issue when female toons are given names or played in way that's unecessarily sexual or "cute". It feels exploitive and reductive.
And I made a female human priest once - felt right, considering what I was thinking was a cross between Mother Theresa and Florence Nightengale.
Harlequinne May 21st 2008 7:37PM
Heh.
You could've just put "weeaboo" in that comment.
I really hope you're (partially) Asian, because there's nothing more annoying than a caucasian, white person telling others that my heritage is "MINE AND MINE ALONE!" and that it's tantamount to sacrilegy to appreciate another culture while not being part of it.
Oh wait, I've just thought of another: The yellow / black / white pride espousing folks.
Other than that, great job on everything else.
rummies May 20th 2008 10:49PM
Are those penises on your shoulders or are you just happy to see me?
Soriel Angelfyre May 20th 2008 11:37PM
at least i will be honest about my female characters....
if im going to be stuck staring at my characters butt for 70 levels...I might as well enjoy the view
granted....I dont know what this might say considering only 2 of my 9 70s are female.....
Sean Riley May 21st 2008 12:00AM
As for the comments regarding females, remember: Alex is a roleplayer. His toons aren't just playing pieces, he's thinking storylines for them. Maybe he finds storylines with female protagonists more interesting. He'd hardly be the only male writer out there to do so. (Greg Rucka comes to mind.)
kcgb May 21st 2008 12:19AM
eww a shadow priest with t5 shoulders :(
where's the Frozen Shadow Weave??
Alex Ziebart May 21st 2008 12:21AM
I'm Enchanting/Herbalism. I dropped Tailoring for the obscene amounts of money Herbalism makes. I sort of expected to have T6 by now, but I'm the only person in my raid group without them. I was the first to get Hat/Robe, and Shahraz quit dropping Conquerer when my turn came about.
Greed for Gold + Bad Luck = T5 Shoulders on a Shadow Priest
Badger May 21st 2008 12:29AM
Nice, we've got another RPer up in here. Keep it up, Alex.
twh May 21st 2008 10:00AM
What a pain. We finally get a columnist that primarily plays Alliance, and yet, he doesn't know the first thing about protection paladins.
