Exalted means goodbye

As an example, last night I finally reached exalted with Shattered Sun Offensive on my third character to do so, my tauren warrior. I saw the green flash of light as I turned in Blood for Blood, headed back to the Isle of Quel'Danas and stocked up on the various exalted goodies I'd been slavering for, the tanking and melee DPS necks, the shield, and the Alchemist Stone patterns in both tank and DPS flavors. And then, as has been the case for my previous two characters to hit exalted (my human warrior and draenei shaman) I got the heck off of that island with my shiny new tabard and ran around in battlegrounds shuddering with relief.
All these factions are very useful for gearing up my growing army of alts, and I am aware that it helps cut down the time I would otherwise have to spend hoping for a random drop from an instance. So why the feeling of glorious freedom and the heated flight to the hills the second I hit exalted?
I never go to Ogri'la anymore. Exalted with them meant goodbye: those poor ogres haven't seen their king (kings, technically) in months. I grind the rep on one character, get him to exalted, and switch to the next character, and as soon as he hits exalted he gets the heck out of dodge. The only time I stop by the Aldor is to get another shoulder enchant, and I haven't been to see the Skyguard since I got my trinket which I don't even wear anymore.
Yeah, it's really nice that all the NPC's are so thrilled to see me but ironic that they really start to like me around the time that I'm sick to death of the sight of them. On any characters that don't need the rep, I usually just do the outland SSO dailies for maintenance cash at this point, since that's still five dailies per 70 (on Norg, that's four characters, 20 dailies, so I may only do it on one or two at most) and if I'm actually grinding the rep that's the only character that does any dailies at all. Is this the intended result of reputation gain, to make me actively dislike the faction that's growing to trust and respect me? Probably not. It's not their fault I have so many alts.
Still, I think I'm done with the Shattered Sun for the time being. Once my paladin hits 70 I'll want the mace and a shield for my tanking set. Well, I'll probably get both shields. Luckily that's still a few levels away, time for me to stop hating the very sight of every single quest giver on that island.

Sounds like guild master training to me.

What I'd love to see in the future is items/quests/etc. that involve exalted with various pre-BC, BC, and WOTLK factions, along with easy ways to go back and get that rep (dailies/turn ins). I mean, it would make sense that something could want exalted with Cenarion Circle AND Cenarion Expd, and it would give people a reason to go farther back into old zones. Plus if you're already exalted with say, Argent Dawn or Thorium Brotherhood, that might actually MEAN something later in the game, as opposed to being 100% useless once the next patch/expansion hits.

Amen. I grind rep with the old factions just because it's there and I like to see the bars full. Plus, running a guild of old world gamers means you spend a lot of time grinding that rep. There's some good stuff you can't get anywhere other than with the Zandlar tribe.
What Linkage suggests would be great too. Kind of like not being able to get into heroics without a certain amount of rep to get the key, not being able to fight a boss unless you were exalted would be excellent. It would be akin to making old world instances with an "heroic" setting, which is something many of us have advocated for some time. I'd like to see exalted with a place like Stormwind meant you could challenge someone like Highlord Bolvar to a duel. Now THAT would be cool.

What if there was an exalted level instance boss. A boss in Magester's Terrace that's only accessible with exalted rep for example. Would that help you stick around the area?
Nekudotayim May 20th 2008 3:25PM
Great, that would surely make me stick around a few more while I get his drops.
Last time I went to Ogri'la was to grind a wrist enchant, and they breaked my heart each kill a piece. So, after I got my drop I had to do some daylies there to feel good with them again! :/
Lycanthro May 20th 2008 3:46PM
What do you mean you went to Ogri'la for a wrist enchant?

"What if there was an exalted level instance boss."
There's a boss in Mana Tombs only accessible with Consortium rep. Drops rings which were very nice pre-boosted badge gear.

I am really hoping that legacy content in the next xpac includes 2 things, sharing the token system across an account (i.e. badges of justice) and sharing rep across the account.

its called burnout. happens with everygame. blizz has just done a very good job of only getting you to burn out on a portion of the game, while still getting their $15.

I do the island only on my warrior, which although 70, pains me to play. Once he hits exalted, ill probably shelve him.
On my hunter, i usually do 20 or 22 every day, mostly for the money. it adds up to around 270g a day
Simon May 20th 2008 3:29PM
I enjoyed the 'grind' with Tranquillian. That was a really nice little 'beginner' faction. Got all those new people (and older players too) into End Game rep grinding.
Once I get Exalted on my Rogue (whom is the only one I'm doing it on atm) then I'm going to continue for the money. I recently bought Blinkstrike for a cool 700g, that's about 50% of the money that I'd already farmed through those dailies.
However once I get my epic flier, that's it. I might do the Supplies for the BoJ chance.
frank May 20th 2008 3:52PM
I was disappointed when I hit exalted on my rogue. The neck piece was a side-grade at best and there was nothing else of use to me. I *was* very glad to be done with it though. Perhaps taking a fresh 70 there (will have a 70 warrior shortly) it will be a different story gear wise.
I definitely won't go back for any of those quests with an already exalted character. It's much easier to make money on the AH.
DrDiesel May 20th 2008 5:31PM
Ive been Exalted for a few weeks now and I still get 8-10 of the dailies done simply for the gold. I have around 3500 at the moment and I plan to continue till I get to about 5k. With an epic flyer already and T4 or better gear I know that once the expansion hits that gold is going to come in very handy early on, especially if I decide to change professions.

The funny thing is, Exalted DOES mean goodbye. They should put in some additional activities that only exalted players can complete, with rewards like free food or water, free repair service, free sharpening stones or other minor bonuses.
Milktub May 20th 2008 6:14PM
Amen. When I hit exalted on my warrior, I said good bye to the Isle and to MrT. I'm never going back again, even on my long-forgotten rogue.
For some reason, I don't have the same hatred for other rep grinds. I'm exalted many times over with CE, Sha'tar, Lower City and Thrallmar, but I'll still run those dungeons/heroics any time someone asks.
Lars May 20th 2008 6:39PM
Good point, hitting exalted should open up a new daily or two which is really fun and gives a bit better gold or something.
Sky_Paladin May 20th 2008 9:12PM
The Consortium have it worked out; you'll pay them a visit every month for your bag of gems...
Chri May 21st 2008 12:11AM
Completely agree.
I try and get a bit of Consortium rep farming in whenever I'm playing my alt purely for the gems.
You don't hate them because you don't feel like you HAVE to do it and there's no urgency to do it immediately because you reap the benefits at the beginning of the next month.

I wish I could get exalted witht hte shatar as quick as I did the Shattered Sun...I have the great alc Stone recipes from the SS but I cant use them because I dont have the original Alchemist's Stone recipe you get by being revered with the Shatar.
It's pretty tough for me to do dungeons because I can never play for more than 45-60 mins straight..
