Mages in WotLK: I'm re-speccing frostfire

As you are likely already aware, the internets exploded yesterday with what is apparently leaked details from the friends and family alpha of Wrath of the Lich King. Arguably the biggest part of this news was that we apparently have access to very early versions of the new talent trees for several of the existing classes. Being the responsible, conscientious Mage columnist that I am, I immediately pored over the Mage talent trees, devouring this very premature, more than likely never-to-see-the-light-of-day info like a starving man would tear into a steak.
Of course, as we all know by now, information coming out this early is almost guaranteed to differ radically from what actually makes it live. Still, it serves a purpose. Even if none of these spells and talents reach the live servers unmolested, at least we're getting a glimpse into Blizzard's development process, and possibly seeing the direction they intend to take our beautiful class in.
We like Blizzard around here, and since they made it clear that they do not want us posting the new info directly, I won't be specifically listing the new Mage talents here. You can find those on the WotLK information Wiki, so click away. When you're done, come on back and join me after the jump, where I'll give my take on what the expansion appears to have in store for Mages.
Ok first things first:
Frostfire? You did see that, right? Here we have a spell that apparently will do what Fireball and Frostbolt do now, only all at once, in the same spell. It doesn't show up in the talent trees, so it looks like a trainable spell for all Mages. Just what is the purpose of this? The damage looks to be a little low if it's intended as a replacement spell for both spells, but you can't argue with the versatility of it. We've long wondered if there would be a dearth of frost-resistant or immune mobs in Northrend, and this could be the answer to that. If you're a Frost Mage, and Frostbolt is your bread and butter, and you find yourself having to do quests that require you to destroy a nest of Icy-Winged Snow-Worms of the Tundra that are all immune to frost spells, you might become frustrated. If you have this spell, though, you're golden. At this early stage, it seems like it might be designed to allow frost or fire Mages to remove the signature spell of the other school (Fireball or Frostbolt) from their action bars and replace it with this one. Maybe. Intriguing, without question.
As far as talents go, the new 51 point talents look phenomenal. I'm going to have to say there is no way on god's green earth that the 51 point Fire talent, Living Bomb, makes it live without some changes. The guy who datamined it had to have gotten those numbers wrong. He just had to have. Even after we learn what the damage output actually is, though, that looks like one seriously cool spell. And the name is pretty much perfect. Isn't that what a Fire Mage is anyway? A living bomb? I have dizzying visions in my head of charging into a crowd of folks on the bridge in Alterac Valley, opening with a rank bazillion Blast Wave, following it with a Dragon's Breath, and then popping Living Bomb as a chaser, and of course, dying right afterward. I will dream tonight of cooking Gnomes and Night Elves en mass. What happy dreams they will be. Feel free to flame me for Horde-bias. I like setting fire to Gnomes and Night Elves in large numbers, and if that's wrong, then I don't want to be right.
The Fire tree in general looks to be geared even more toward insane burst damage, low survivability, and big, frequent crits. In turn, Blizzard seems to be solidifying the Frost tree as the survivability/control tree even further. This is borne out by the 51 point talent in that tree, Deep Freeze, which is apparently an instant cast stun on a fairly short cooldown. Here's the thing, though, it seems to only work on frozen targets, so it's a good thing they appear to have added new ways to apply frozen-status. There appears to be a new talent in the 35 point tier that looks like a must-have for Frost Mages. Fully talented, it gives a 20% chance for every frost spell to cause frozen status to your target. That seems to mean that you'll be able to freeze things far more often than you can now, pummel your target with a couple of Ice Lances, and then stun them for another 5 seconds right before they break out of being frozen. Couple that with an improved, longer-duration and more powerful Water Elemental, and Frost Mages should be in for a nice expansion.
The Arcane tree looks to see a lot of changes, most notably the reintroduction of spirit as an important Mage stat. Ok, so it's important now, but you have to admit that it isn't as important as it probably should be. There are two new talents in the arcane tree that involve spirit directly, one that increases your total spirit the way Arcane Mind increases your total intellect, and one that increases your spell crit by a flat percentage of your spirit, a la Mind Mastery for your spell damage by way of intellect. It'll be nice to have a good reason to gear for spirit again. The 51 point talent in the Arcane tree, Arcane Barrage, looks to be a pretty straight-up damage dealing option. It's instant-cast, it's mana intensive, and I have no idea how it would fit into any sort of spell rotation, but that's probably looking way, way too far ahead at this point.
There are a couple of other notable changes to existing talents in this tree. Arcane Focus has improved immeasurably, making the entire Arcane tree more mana-efficient and apparently doling out free spell hit to boot, and then only requiring 3 talent points instead of 5, just in case you were still on the fence about taking it. I have the feeling this talent will change, but if it stays like this, I lust after it. Did you see Prismatic Cloak? Right now, it's not much more than a small damage mitigation talent that only PvP Mages ever take, and then only if they can't find somewhere else to put the points. If this leaked talent tree is right, though, the expansion will allow this talent to--brace yourself--make Invisibility useful. For 2 talent points, this will reduce the fade time of Invisibility by 4 seconds. That means when you want to drop aggro, or just pop out of sight in an Arena match, it'll only take you 1 second to do so. Wow. I might actually hotkey that spell if this goes down. There's even a positive change to Magic Attunement, making it something I might actually take. Increased range on my Arcane spells? Yes please. Think of an extra 6 yards on Polymorph, and Arcane Missiles, and Slow for a second. Just think about it. Well? Pants still dry? I know mine aren't. And not just because my kid spilled apple juice on me, either: because I peed in them.
Let me reiterate that nothing here is set in any kind of stone at all whatsoever. None of this leaked info is anything even remotely approaching what will actually happen. But it does suggest a direction for us Mages. Right now, that direction is looking pretty awesome. We're getting a lot of what we've asked for: sweet, sweet DPS improvements for every tree, and nicely boosted utility in several situations. Does this mean a return to the top of the DPS meters? Who can say? The expansion is still a full beta, about 62 thousand PTR patches, and probably something like 8 months away. Absolutely anything can happen. To me, though, this leaked info looks suspiciously like a step in the right direction. I'm optimistic.
As a self-diagnosed whiny Mage, it's very, very nice to feel that way.
Let me know what you think, fellow Mages. I didn't have space to mention every tidbit out there, so let me know what I've missed. Looking forward to eating Sweet Potato Pie while riding tandem with a Death Knight on your new warp stalker mount? I know I am. Impart to us your wisdom, robed flame-slingers of Azeroth, and I'll see you on Saturday like always.

I wonder what smartass blizzard fanboy voted down my comment.. Just face the fact that blizzard "leaked" both client and info to prove people that they got some fun stuff aswell, and not letting them focus on AoC that much,
Shawn May 21st 2008 9:25AM
Either publish the info or don't.
This attitude of "we're not gonna publish it but we basically are by linking and talking about it" is really silly. It looks like you are trying to have it both ways and it is quite laughable.
Christian Belt May 21st 2008 9:35AM
I agree that it's sort of silly, but it's what we have to do. There's a fine line here, and we can't cross it and still consider ourselves honorable journalists. The info has been leaked, and is widely available other places on the internet. We would be remiss professionally as WoW journalists not to report on it. The difference is that we can't actually originate any of the info. Which basically means that we can offer opinion and analysis of what appears elsewhere, but can't offer up a straightforward list or post leaked screenshots. We can link to other websites that do offer such things, but none of them will appear here, at least for now. It's a strange situation, but we simply have to do it this way.
Shawn May 21st 2008 9:57AM
But that's just it. You can't say in one breath "We have to report it because we are honest journalists" but then say in the next breath "We are removing the content from our site because we don't want to upset Blizzard." What happened to honest journalism?
We now know you will hold back news to please Blizzard. It makes me wonder how far you will go and what else you might censor to please them in the future...
It's your site and you can do as you wish. You have no responsibility to me, but you have compromised your integrity by being willing to tailor your content to meet Blizzard's approval.
If all the fansites who got the emails from Blizzard refused to comply do you really think Blizzard would forbid them all from coming to Blizzcon? Blizzard is a smart company and they know that the fansites are a good thing and when push comes to shove they aren't going to bite the hand that feeds them.
Take pride in what you do and realize that Blizzard gains from you and you have power here.

Oh come off your Woodward and Bernstein fantasies, or take them to courttv.com. They are not writing hard-hitting exposé's here. This is a companion site to the World of Warcraft that serves a fan community who presumably view Blizzard as a beneficent entity, not some behemoth bent on keeping you in the dark for their own nefarious purposes. Cry moar.
wyrd May 21st 2008 7:55PM
they are hardly not reporting on the issue, they just arent posting the stuff on their site. they still talk about it, and link to it. they just cant host it or blizz will be pissed (aka take their blizzcon access away)
personally id rather have the bloggers go and tell me about it, than see some crappy leaked news that i can find plenty of other places. its not like i even have to go search for it with the plethora of links they have posted.
Kugala May 21st 2008 9:28AM
At this point, pretty much anyone that has an internet connection is aware of the leaks...and well, it takes 5 seconds with google to find the information. So there's really no point sticking your head in the sand.
As far as the talents go...eh. It's really going to come down to a numbers game. There's nothing in there that makes me excited though (Living bomb makes me cringe with yet another melee range AoE, unless it's targettable like SoC.)
Frostfire bolt seems a decent fix for the massive immunities we're sure to run into, and I wonder which talents it'll benefit from? Could be interesting if it was both trees, as it would really bring into play an elementalist build. 200% crits AND ignite?
I just remember the BC beta, where everything started kinda OK then got nerfed into the ground over successive patches (Kalgan will never live down the 'Jaw Dropping Damage' line, ever.) So for now, I'm mainly ignoring the numbers and looking at mechanics.
Kugala May 21st 2008 9:34AM
Doublepost, but I did notice something I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere.
Spell 43024
Name: Mage Armor (Rank 6)
Description: Increases your resistance to all magic by 40 and allows 30% of your mana regeneration to continue while casting. In addition, the duration of all harmful Magic effects used against you is reduced by -50%...
Interesting change. Of couse, Fel Armor is now +180 DMG and 30% Health and Mana regen. Doesn't look like Molten got changed aside from more shield damage, nor Ice Armor at all.
s256 May 21st 2008 2:40PM
This is an anti-dot buff.

Green Armadillo May 21st 2008 9:35AM
FYI, Arcane focus currently awards spell hit, even though it's phrased differently (the talent, and similar ones in other caster talent trees, pre-date the addition of spell hit as a stat to the game), so the hypothetical leaked changed version is actually a nerf from 10% hit to 3% hit, 3% mana reduction.
I'm guessing that 10% spell hit from low tier talents made it too easy to reach the spell hit cap (other classes with similar talents appear to be facing similar nerfs). The new version still allows you to get close to the cap against even-conned mobs, but requires all DPS casters to invest in spell hit rating for raid bosses. Expect the bulk of the excess itemization budget on the new raid gear to focus on spell hit, while lower tier non-raid gear puts out similar numbers versus even conned mobs but doesn't offer spell hit bonuses.
Vestras May 21st 2008 9:42AM
Actually, I am very underwhelmed by the 51-point talents. They feel like PVP talents, especially Deep Freeze since a raid mob or boss can't be frozen for longer than 2 seconds max, if at all. Kinda sucks.
Living bomb is fun I supose, but then, I never plan to do fire again.
Zarzuur May 21st 2008 11:50AM
/agree, freezing is limited value in groups, and they seem to have loaded these kind of defensive abilities into Frost which makes it even more soloing/PvP. Whereas, looking at Fire all the new top talents seem like imba attacks. The bit of slowing needed can be provided by the new Frostfire bolt too.
atm, I'll definitely be changing my mage alt to Fire in WOTLK.
ErsatzPotato May 21st 2008 1:49PM
My comments below are rather negative. That's only because nothing here is anything I wanted OR gave me a tingle of "ooh, nifty!". It's early enough I'm not terribly worried though.
The new talents explain why they extended the ice lance range. I'd wondered about that one.
Yeah, the frost talents are a bit dodgy. I'm assuming Winter's Grasp will put up a frozen status without actually freezing it and work on bosses, and also that the 51 talent would allow stunning on bosses. Otherwise the deep frost mage only gets brought along as the token guy to lower the boss's hit chance. (Damn fine talent too. ALL attacks? Don't see that going live on bosses unless the proc is very low.) The problem there is no way keeping bosses stunned 12% of the time is going to be allowed....
Good to see they plan to improve the elementals. Pity it's not the change I'd hoped for but if they scale the mana to last the extra time it's certainly nice to have. I'd hoped for pet getting some of toon's spellhit. Crit & speed would be nice too, as would extra damage/mana, but hit is the big one. Elemental missing 16x as often as the owner sucks.
Frostfire is a little depressing. It's an interesting idea but basically confirms lots of frost resistant stuff. Doesn't help the elemental either. It does include "more vulnerable to frost" which is interesting. My guess is those are gonna be a lot rarer than the resistant ones. Ah well, was planning on respeccing or shifting mains to my 'lock anyway. We'll see how it works out when the talents and mobs hit beta.
Mostly punting on fire and arc 'cause it's been quite awhile since I played one seriously. The continued addition of fun-but-gimmick damage spells to Arc is amusing. Living bomb looks hillarious for BGs and a really entertaining way to get killed in a raid. Burnout seems godawful for PVE. Enjoy opening that ten minute fight with a 2300 mana crit...scorch. Sure is fun getting those debuffs on the boss, eh?
Dah May 21st 2008 9:45AM
Arcane looks like it has potential.
Fire doesn't look much different, but Living Bomb could definitely be fun.
Frost looks meh.
sead May 21st 2008 9:45AM
I've been seeing more and more stuff posted around the net lately on WotLK Class info.... but nothing on the Paladin class...what's up with that.
I just hope the leaks keep comming...for all classes in general.
But please more Pally info....(crossing fingers)
grofer May 21st 2008 9:58AM
it's all in a huge thread in the mmowned.com general forums. I guess with the Wowinsider journalistic approach to link to other sites which post leaked info it's actually best to link straight to the source of most of the information. Just keep checking there directly to get the latest information about the Alpha without it being diluted until it gets to here or other news sites.
Kryptonls May 21st 2008 9:45AM
Oh dear.... "We like Blizzard around here" - so you complied with their demands, yet link to external sources that have not felt Blizzard's grasp yet and then discuss the alpha content anyway.
You are basically accepting what Blizzard's email said and then disregarding it immediately after. Might as well post the content anyway, given you are discussing it.
wyrd May 21st 2008 8:02PM
They are doing what they have to do to keep the blizz happy, while still giving us as much info as possible. people need to quit bitching.
selljanetoo May 21st 2008 9:59AM
This may just be my undying hatred for Warlocks, but one thing I had a major qualm with was the new Warlock spell which promises to transform said Warlock into a demon and increase their armor up to 360%.
If you consider a Rogue to be the Warlock anti-class, then you have now eradicated all classes from being competitive against the Warlock.
By the time I hit the Wiki, the talent tree links were broken, so half of what you're discussing makes no sense to me, but I walked away from this wiki with the knowledge that I must do one of four things:
-Level a druid to 70
-Level a warlock to 70
-Learn to Death Knight
-Quit
From what I've read, these hinted at spells and talents offer more of the same humdrum mechanics and weakened DPS that I could very easily surpass if I left my mage for greener pastures.
And, that honestly makes me sad to admit.
I have stuck by my mage through thick and thin and defended their viability and assets in all regions of the game, but denial ain't just a river in Egypt.
I'll keep searching for the talent trees in hope that it will lighten my mood.
Silidar May 21st 2008 9:54AM
I hope they fix burnout to not have a negative effect. Why do they keep hitting fire mages with negative effects on their talents? I may no longer be a fire mage if there is such a huge negative impact on a talent like that. It would be nice if it was an option that I could turn off or on. Maybe by putting on molten armor it would turn it on and I could combustion, trinket, icy into a frenzy of crit dps.
