The problem is, when you are trying to build a mark around your game nickname. Changing your character's name very often leads to the fact that none of your old friends will recognize you and won't say "wow you are that Raistlan from Ultima Online?". If you are new to the game and decide to be totally anonymous you will end up building a totally new friend/player base. Well.. but it's a common choice I guess.. fame or anonimity.
