Officers' Quarters: What's in a guild name?
Every Monday Scott Andrews contributes Officers' Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership.Naming your guild is a funny thing. You want it to stand out in some way, but, at the same time, you don't want to give it such a weird or offensive name that people are embarrassed to walk around with it above their heads. It can be an agonizing decision. I remember back in the days before my officers and I founded our guild, we exchanged dozens of messages trying to find the perfect name. So I can sympathize with the author of this week's e-mail, who discovered that her carefully chosen name had also been chosen by another guild with some eerily similar characteristics.
Hello, Scott.
I don't know if I have a conundrum, a mystery, or a coincidence. I find it kinda funny more than anything else, but wonder if I should feel some concern or do something about it--
More than a month ago, I split off from a friendly, pretty well-knit social guild to form my own of same. I had decent ideas about the sort of people I wanted together, and still have aims of trying to build a Kara team (I follow the casual raiding articles religiously). We're still very small, but we're out there, and we have a pretty notable guild name. It was also the only guild of that name across all servers -- I checked the Armory at that time.
Just last night I happened to be trawling the armory, looking up some friends and their gear, and, of course, popped in my own guild name. Much to my surprise, I see a brand new guild (~10 members) on another Normal server with the same name, cross-factioned. Further, their guild tabard is nearly identical (save for a slightly different border; the colors and image are same), and their GL is the same class as I am, a Blood Elf to my Human.
I could still buy a coincidence, because it's not like my guild is THAT notable yet. But overall, it's just kind of amusing and weird. But the only point I can figure being concerned on is that a guild's reputation is sold by what people associate with the name -- and I am not affiliated with this other guild -- and wonder if any of their future reputation might spill onto our guild, possibly to our harm. Do I attempt to make contact, flip out and demand a guild name change for these guys and pitch a lot of drama (not preferred), or just live and let live, knowing that my own version of Star Trek's Mirror Universe is out there?
Thanks,
[Anonymous]
I'll admit it: The first thing I did when I read this e-mail is immediately go to the Armory and look up my own guild name. Fortunately, we're still the only guild with that name. But there are plenty of guild names that seem to proliferate. According to the Armory, there are 106 guilds named Killers. There are 120 guilds named Death. There are 122 guilds named Guild (how lame). But those are all pretty generic.
How about people who think they're being clever by naming their guilds after NPC labels? They're not nearly as original as they might think. 54 guilds are named General Goods. 105 guilds are named Innkeeper. 172 guilds are named Banker!
Then there are the silly and off-color puns. Sorry, you guys fail at originality too. 47 results for Riders of Lohan. 58 results for Naga Stole My Bike, 62 for Me So Hordey, 99 for Bloodbath and Beyond, 110 for I'd Mana Tap That, 127 for Crit Happens, and 146 results for Gnomeland Security.
And all of these totals are just from U.S. servers.
When you go through the trouble of coming up with a unique name, you'd like it to stay that way. And our anonymous author chose a pretty cool name, although I'm not allowed to tell you what it is. It's also kind of creepy how the two guilds have several other similarities, but I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
What can you do about it? Not much, I'm sorry to tell you. You could try to contact them by rolling a toon on their server, but I doubt they'd be willing to change their name just because you ask nicely. Even so, I wouldn't worry too much about them doing something to "stain" your guild's reputation. Since they are cross-faction on another server, it's unlikely that people would confuse the two guilds. If worst comes to worst, you could always screenshot your /ginfo and say, "We were here first!"
However, you could also look at this situation as an opportunity. Get to know them a little bit and maybe you could start a cross-faction exchange program of sorts, where people in your guild roll their Horde toons in this "Bizarro" guild and vice versa.
Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else? What did you do about it? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen to me!
/salute

From my experience on EU realms, there is an apparent tendency among Scandinavians to group together in guilds with generally awful names (no offense).
I think every European realm has at least two variants of The (Holy/Righteous) (Saviors/Legion/Crusaders/Knights/Alliance/Vikings) of (Scandinavia/Denmark/Norway/Sweden).

pfff
"The royal danish order" is the best name ever for a danish guild :D

I'm still trying to convince my guild to disband and reform as Spackletastic! but no takers. Bah. Just think: the all singing, all dancing, all home improvement Broadway revue guild. I dare you to say Spackletastic! aloud with proper verve and not grin like an idiot. Imagine the shame of getting pwned in a BG by someone with that tag. Or, World first drop of Giant Scary Walrus Boss By Spackletastic! It's even a verb. "Man, I spackletasticed that 'lock. It was great."
Thakgor May 26th 2008 12:15PM
Okay from now on when I beat someone in PvP I swear my macro is gonna say that I "spackletasticed" that guy. Made me lol in RL.

There isn't really anything you can do to stop someone from scooping up your guild name if they stumble across it and like it. You should be flattered really.
I'm the GM of . All the charter members of the guild were my IRL friends who used to play DotA (Warcraft III mod) together at the internet cafe we hung out at. We catch some flak every once and a while for the name, but we like it and we've actually managed to quickly become one of the top 10 raiding guilds one our server. Though our recent drama has often made me wish I'd gone with my first gut choice of .
Let's also not forget that nearly every server used to have and many of its inane variations like or . It was a bit of an epidemic for a while.
By the way, I still think is funny. As well as the classic or , and a PvP guild I saw recently, .

Well.. I don't know or care why any of guild names that I put in the pointy arrow brackets didn't show up, but I'm not going to bother putting them in now.
GG blogger client. Lame sauce.

Angle brackets are interpreted as HTML, and stripped out for security.
Friday_Knight May 26th 2008 11:58AM
That's pretty much what I figured happened. I was just to annoyed atm to retype the guild names.
moink May 26th 2008 12:05PM
It's not "stripped for security;" it's treated as an html markup code. And we should be glad we can use html in comments. Also, it's a good thing that browsers ignore html they don't understand; it has enabled the growth of the language beyond the original few allowed markups.
Yeah, it's OT. But I couldn't help myself.
pudds May 26th 2008 12:13PM
No, the HTML tags are stripped out server side. Try for yourself.
I'm assuming they're stripped to prevent XSS attacks, however, its entirely possible they just don't want people to link images or post malicious HTML and break the page layout.
Cynra May 27th 2008 8:42AM
They are stripped out, but I doubt that it's for security purposes. Instead, I bet they're treated as code since all of the code is recognized using greater-than/less-than symbols. Want to get around it (to display guild names, code, or otherwise?) Use the HTML equivalents!
* < - <
* > - >
For example, my perky priest's guild is The Paragon. If I want to include the name as it's displayed in-game, I'd type <The Paragon> for <The Paragon>. Nifty, yes?
It's a problem you run into a lot when trying to display code online. A lot of CMSes will convert the character to the appropriate HTML code, but apparantly it doesn't happen here for comments -- most likely because HTML is disabled for all comments, from what I've seen!
Cynra May 27th 2008 8:47AM
Actually, correction: the name of my priest's former guild was <The Paragon>. I forgot that I logged in last night after a five day absence (I was traveling during the holidays) to find that the guild had disbanded. I have no idea what happened or why, but as someone who was pretty active in the guild and contributed a lot despite not being an officer, I'm floored.
I almost have to wonder if it's due to the recent wave of bannings. I can't think of any reason why a small, tight-knit group of roleplayers suddenly vanished off the face of the WoW-verse with nary a word. Disappointing.
Dave May 26th 2008 11:52AM
Actually I thought it was at least semi clever in the pre-BC days to have as an Alliance guild and as a horde guild.
Of course those guilds are now pretty crappy names, but back when they didn't exist, you could actually fool people every once in a while.
Xin May 26th 2008 12:01PM
zomg your guild is the same name as another, who cares! there are tons of guild with the same name on different servers.
Harlequinne May 26th 2008 12:34PM
Maybe it's not nice, I know, but...
Who cares! There are tons of trolls on the internet.
One more or less...
Harlequinne May 26th 2008 12:36PM
Ah, jeez, forgot about the bracket thing.
*"Insert scathing comment about Xin / Huangism's personal tragedies, followed by a Who cares! There are tons of people who go through that."
Thakgor May 26th 2008 12:16PM
There's gotta be one like you in every thread doesn't there. Why do people feel the need to bring down the mood with a bad attitude?
Badger May 26th 2008 12:33PM
Because they have nothing better or more entertaining to do than try and make others miserable.
Ignore 'em, and they lose. Plain and simple. ^_^

Welcome to the Internet.

The first guild I started was called "Vendor Trash". I thought it was brilliant, but most people either didn't get it, got it but didn't think it was funny, or thought it was somehow a play on "white trash". Ultimately, it wasn't very successful. I ended up giving the guild over to one of the few remaining members when I started up another guild just for me and my alts so I could use the guild bank for extra storage. I think he eventually did a /gdisband since I don't see it in the armory search anymore. Hmmm... that would make an interesting guild name... "slash gdisband".
