Phat Loot Phriday: Rod of the Sun King

Name: Rod of the Sun King (Wowhead, Thottbot, WowDB)
Type: Epic One-hand Mace
Damage/Speed: 189-352 / 2.70 (100.2 DPS)
Abilities:
- Increases attack power by 52.
- Chance on hit: gain 10 energy or 5 rage. This is the proc (short for procedure, from the programming world, though it's come to mean a number of other things) that really makes this mace stand out as a choice pic for Rogues or DPS Warriors -- the proc rate seems to be around 3 procs per minute, which is a substantial amount of energy and rage coming back to the user.
- Unfortunately, it also seems there's a short cooldown on the proc, which means you can't have a bunch of procs in a row, and get a bunch of free energy or rage back to back. Still, this weapon provides a pretty steady source of extra Warrior/Rogue fuel, and it's exceptional for that reason.
Druids, unfortunately for them, have no use for this weapon, even the bear kinds. Since the proc requires a "chance on hit," and bear Droods don't actually hit anything with their weapon (just their paws), it'll never proc for them. Blizzard might have been a little more giving on that one, but as it is, this weapon doesn't help bears at all.
Getting Rid of It: Sells to vendors for 14g 59s 25c, disenchants into a Void Crystal. There will be other, better weapons you find on your way up the raiding ladder (and while the DPS on this is nice, the high-end Arena gear beats it), but the proc on this weapon is almost enough to keep it anyway.

"Proc" refers to a Programmed Random OCurrance, not a "Procedure".

Technically, I believe proc originally referred to "procedure." The "programmed random occurrence," as far as I know, is a backronym.

Technically Druids have their own form of this in the form of the two piece bonus from Their Feral T4 set.

I know that the raid equivalence thing sucks sometimes... this item is certainly one of those... Badge stuff is better than this... it looks cool though! :)
DPS Warriors are usually not rage starved, so the nicety with the rage proc goes largely to waste. It's too bad, really. Instead of AP, some STR would have been better appreciated. :)
It's sad that Kael drops stuff in TK that is less in quality than badge gear! Those Vanir fist weaps are to die for!

For a DPS warrior, Rod of the Sun King isn't even superior to Talon of the Phoenix off of Al'ar. White DPS isn't everything.

Although they can't use the proc on this, the slow weapon speed and high max damage make this a nice weapon for Enhancement Shamans as well.
Sword-spec rogues (and dual-wield warriors?) get extra hits with their main-hand weapon if their off-hand weapon is a sword, so using this with sword spec could still be useful depending on what your other weapon is.
This is a terrible weapon for druids regardless as it's a one-handed with no stats or feral attack power. Might as well grab a green "of the bandit". At least you'll get some agility as well...

Max damage doesn't matter, all that matters is average damage.
Fury warriors can theoretically spec into sword spec. They generally do not, as it limits weapon choices and still gives subpar DPS (along with a worse damage:threat ratio).

OMG - our guilds first Kael kill I got this.
Replaced Big Bad Wolfs Paw from kara lol. Still use it in BT today - such an amazing proc for a fury warrior.
- killerDJMW - Thunderlord - Ubiquitous

Still the best weap to use today in an offtank situation when rage-starved and need high devastates.
