Prot-Gear for Holy Paladins: will it help?
Reader Ron dropped us a line about a basic gear quandary. A Holy paladin who cruised most of his instances with Bear tanks, Ron has amassed a small collection of paladin tanking gear. And he's kept it around, since experience has taught him to never throw away class-appropriate gear.
His current Holy kit doesn't pack the spell crit to unleash the full-fledged DPS frenzy of his Shockadin. His question? Ron would like to know if swapping out some of his Holy gear for a bit of Defense and Avoidance might make his dailies a little easier.
The easy answer here is...
..."Not really, and probably not."
Some Defense and Block Rating might make your life a little easier, especially when it comes to nudging lower level mobs along the attack table. As a Holy Paladin, you're probably not inclined to stack so much Defense and Avoidance (Block, Parry, and Dodge ratings) that you'd get a noticeable effect against even same-level mobs. So any small, incremental increase in Defense or Avoidance is only really coming into play against mobs who aren't likely to hit or crit you very hard anyway. You're pretty much just hedging your bet even more that the low-level mob won't hit you hard at all.
Now, the ability of Protection Paladins to grind against multiple, non-caster mobs is fairly legendary. The forums are alive with the tales of Protadins grinding ten, twenty, thirty or more mobs into loot-ridden paste beneath their feet. All at once. Sometimes, while away from keyboard. And it's true: Protection Paladins can do that sort of thing. It's what we're built to do, as the Superhot AE Tank.
But the synergy of a Protection Paladin's gear and their resulting ability to grind is based on a few talents in the last half of the Protection tree. Holy Shield and Blessing of Sanctuary are both must-have talents for Protadin AoE grinding. These talents make up a pretty significant portion of their damage. Every time the mob hits the Protadin, the mob takes reflective damage from Holy Shield and Blessing of Sanctuary (as well as Retribution Aura, Shield Spike, and whatever else they might have happening at the time).
Without those particular tools empowering your reflective damage, all you'd really be doing with Defense and Avoidance is missing out on the damage output of the stats you swapped out. If various pieces are weak points (not having spell crit or spell damage), then maybe replacing those pieces will help you a little bit. If the cloth isn't directly helping your damage, then why not ditch it?
But, short of relearning your talents, your best bet is probably just to work on getting better Shockadin gear. You want more damage, not more not-entirely-helpful Defense. A good shield will probably give you a little nudge, without sacrificing too many stats. Shields are fairly awesome for that.
You probably want to look at your Judge and Seal rotation -- if you have both Wisdom and Light up at the same time, that's where some of your damage is going. Try the Ye Olde Judge-Crusader, Judge-Righteous rotation. You're just going to be better off by increasing your damage, upgrading your gear, and maybe popping consumables. As a Holy Paladin, you're not going to get the big returns on Defense and Avoidance like a Protection Paladin would.
Good hunting!

as a prot pally i have to say it sucks. i wear spell damage and ret gear when i grind mobs that arent in big numbers. but when it comes to aoe grinding just do as described above

Better idea is to get some of the Shockadin PvP gear. Loads of stam, plenty of crit and spelldmg, and enough resil to push crits off the table.

I just do all of my dailies in my heal gear. Heck, I even go and tank lowbie instances or things like the trees in Skettis in my full heal gear. Admittedly, I have some pretty nice endgame heal gear to help allow for this... but for me, it's just faster to mow through things in healing stuff. Muchh better mana regen too, so it doesn't make it too mindless or slow, but rather I can just plow thoruhg one and do the next non-stop.
I do carry aorund a full set of tanking gear though, for when I tank 5mans, or heck even in Hyjal. I keep my spec, but make sure to cap on tank stats in my tank gear, should I really need it.

Interestingly enough, I have found that as a prot paladin, wearing healing gear is much, much easier and quicker. Much like the poster above stated. More mana, better regen, also higher spell damage, and I still get around 30% block with holy shield.

I wear my tier 4 healing gear when doing my dailies. Before that I used my holy pvp gear when questing. However, For the love of all that is holy don't throw the tanking gear away. You may decide to reroll prot before WTK comes out.

I do my dailies in a combination of my healing gear and my old dps set (from before 1/3 of plus healing went toward damage).
Basically I sub in anything that ups my spell damage or my pell hit (or better yet, both).
My holy spell damage is now over 1k unbuffed, and most mobs are near death after holy shock/consecrate/judged SoB and I can finish them with the hammer. Demons and undead are even easier.
And I can definitely handle 3-5 mobs by simply focusing on one at a time while I consecrate the others down. Often I can hammer the last two as they've fallen below 20 percent health by the time I get around to them
Switch to concentration aura when I need to heal. Drink up after a few mobs and keep moving. I'm nowhere near as fast as a mage or hunter, but I don't dread grinding nearly as much as holy priests do.

I doubt I'll be respeccing prot. I did it for awhile pre-70, but it's not my thing. But you never know, it might be more fun if I did it for longer than 5 instances. I learned on my warrior to keep all the gear I get for various specs.

Unless you're actually running the risk of dying while running your dailies (possible, but my only problems with this tended to be my resto shaman in greens), higher DPS from spelldamage gear will probably get things done quicker.
As for judging Crusader, it depends on how long you plan to hit the mob for; judging crusader adds about 295 spell damage for the max rank judgement to all your following holy spells. In exchange, you're giving up one judgement.
On my prot pally, I've got around 400 spell damage in my normal gear plus the 2pc T4 bonus (helm and shoulders). My judgement hits for around 700 damage without Crusader, and about 840 with. If the mob has more than about 7000 hp, it's probably worth it for me to start out judging Crusader. If not, it's just as fast to just use Righteousness and get one extra judgement.
Also, a lot of protection tanking gear has very little intellect or mp5, relying on Spiritual Attunement for mana regen.

Holy paladins can't AoE grind? I really think you should reconsider that comment.

i'd actually go the other direction and say holy paladins are the superior AE grinding solution. prot has good avoidance and good hp, but lousy mana, next to no regen and when the mana is tapped, you're kinda boned.
holy has great mana, good regen and oodles of spelldamage potential. need a heal? flip over to concentration aura and you're gtg.

I asked about the Prot gear because I'm not specced into Retribution. I'm 43/18/0 because I was having some issues with getting absolutely smashed by mobs escaping aggro back when I wore more cloth.
Hollywood Ron May 31st 2008 12:10AM
Oh yeah, thanks for answering my question! I play paladin on Horde side, so there aren't many theorycrafters in my current guild who could help me with my problem. Cheers!

The Shattered Sun dailies are particularly nasty for Prot Paladins anyway, the only ones which are AoE grindable are the Atamal Armaments and Dawnblade Reinforcements (if you can find more than 1 alive at any one time!!).
The others have to be done 1-on-1 due to a prevalance of casters, mana drainers, ranged and healing mobs - hell I was considering respeccing to HOLY for this! :)
Having just completed the run to Exalted as a Tankadin - all I can say is I'm glad I don't have to do it again...
There's an irony in the fact that the only armour/weapons at Exalted are Shields - as the quests are hardest to complete if you NEED a shield :)
Saeverud May 31st 2008 12:24PM
Seems to be a common theme of switching armor out for healing/dps than keeping on your good old warrior plate. No change here really. I do the same, boosting my dismal 4500 mana up to almost 10000, while only dropping a few thousand health and gaining 500 or so spell damage really allows you to quickly down 1 on 1 which in normal tanking gear just plain sucks.

I'd suggest the prot PVP armour myself as I have full S1 lamellar gear from PVPing in battlegrounds. Whether as Holy or Prot I'd reccomend the lamellar for higher spell damage.
Admitedly lower on mana and mana regen than Holy paladins I find as prot it is fun an interesting to do the daily grind as well as general questing, etc... and PVPing as prot in the lamellar I find definately rewarding.
I'm looking forward to getting through the arenas as prot... though that might be a bit harder... who knows.
