WoW, Casually: Finding forum help

This week, I answer some Reader Mail from Arjun.
Hi Robin,
The writing style of [WoW Insider] is always upbeat/positive, which is great. I thought I'd ask you your opinion of the official WoW forums, especially the realm forums. What do you think of them? Should casual or newer players try to avoid them at all costs? I've been playing casually for about a year, and have two 70s (Ally Mage and BE Tankadin). I posted to the forums that I'm looking for a new guild, casual in focus. It's amazing what happens, but not in a good way. [Here is the forum link.] What would you recommend to your readers about the official WoW forums?
Thanks,
Arjun
My answer is after the jump.
Hey Arjun!
In general, I have to say that writing anything anywhere on the internet requires a thick skin. Whether because of the GIFT, lack of manners, nerd rage or a combination of all of these, some people are very comfortable with insulting anyone who dares to post publicly. Forum Trolls don't just hang out in gaming related forums. I read a lot of knitting blogs, for example, and while the knitting community tends to be a friendly bunch, they still have their share of obnoxious commenters. I still have nightmares of the time I posted a column and woke up to dozens of people hating my guts. When people feel strongly about something, even non-trolls, they sometimes forget they are talking to real people with feelings. It takes a while to get used to.
Back in EverQuest's heyday, the official forums were called Whineplay, for obvious reasons. My server's community didn't bother to go there for requests like yours. Instead, we went to the Stratics forum for our server and posted. Of course, there were still trolls, but we all knew each other in game and therefore rude posters could pay the price of people not grouping or raiding with them. (Except for priests. Priests could get away with anything, even dropping acid during raids. But I digress.) Though EQ was huge at the time, that still meant only 500,000 people spread out among many servers at their peak, so the community was much smaller than the WoW community.
Because World of Warcraft is such a popular game, there are a wide variety of sites that offer forums for it. In general, however, if you want to get the largest audience for your question, going to the official forums is the best answer. But if you are looking to become a part of a more intimate and closely monitored community, LiveJournal is a good option. Unfortunately, your server is not represented there, but if you have more general questions regarding gear or talents, for example, you are more likely to get friendlier help.
I did notice that the third comment on your post did invite you to join his casual raiding guild. That is the real key to writing on the internet, whether posting to a blog (like this one) or on the forums or even in Trade Chat: read the good and ignore the bad. Just read the people who actually respond constructively to your question and ignore the people who are just there to poke at you. It is important to remember that someone can respond to you constructively but not necessarily with an answer you want to hear. If someone says that your gear isn't good enough to join his guild, he is actually being helpful. If someone says your gear isn't good enough to join any guild, he is just wrong.
Overall, I think the WoW forums are a good resource for casual players, particularly for server specific questions. Unless you really enjoy arguing, however, I recommend that you don't feed the trolls. Just respond to the constructive posts or clarify your question if you feel that the responses are missing your point. The more you defend yourself against the trolls, the more they will taunt you. And our game-related time is too short for all of that negative energy.
I hope you have found a casual raiding guild by this time and are enjoying your new server. I agree with you that casual players should spend their limited game time having fun. Let us know if you are succeeding.

I don't know how other realm forums compare, but on Gurubashi, the trolls seem to outnumber normal people. It really does make one cynical because the trolls constantly encourage each other. It's amazing how some people can endlessly entertain themselves by posting "try coilfang" a dozen times a day.
The way I deal with internet trolls is to just ignore them and feel pity rather than anger for them.

I find it rather amusing that a server named after an ancient troll empire is full of a rather different sort of troll nowadays.
Kassaria May 30th 2008 1:18PM
Robin is right on. There are many different types of players that represent the same percentage of "trolls" in RL. Fortunately, the positive players out-number the negative...just focus on those friendly posts, just like you would in RL; and don't be afraid to hold out to find the right guild for you...

Oh lord help me, I'm gonna be thinking of "knitting trolls" all day now!
"Noob, learn to knit!"
"If you roll your yarn-balls overhand, you epic fail."
"Crochet FTW!"
Anyways, back on topic, I think your advise was excellent. When posting to the forums, it's important to put your filters up. There are people out there who are just plain mean, and it's not worth the grief to listen to 'em.
Things the forum poster could have done better? Well, he (or she) could have rolled on my server (Sentinels-H). My bunch (Ogrim's Razor) is in pretty much the same boat - gearing up for KZ, and we could use more people with similar casual attitudes.
Cailleach May 30th 2008 1:57PM
The sad, pathetic thing is, those knitting troll comments are ACCURATE! Add 'zomg copyright violation" and you have a pretty complete trolling pic.
Danny Zaidman May 31st 2008 1:27PM
Oh wow, Cailleach, didnt think I'd see you again.
But of course, I will stay anonymous, since I don't want to ruin my WoWinsider reputation (you know, the non-existent one).
By the way. You lose!

Arjun, I know this is both negative and generalising, but I hate the official forums and steer clear from posting on them unless I really have to. Although, it does seem to me like you got the real Grade-A trolls in your thread - perhaps just extra-unlucky?!
To me, your gear looked good, better than some of the people I have been to Kara with. Kara (especially the first few bosses) is the teamwork check - not just the gear check. I found that when starting Kara, our performance would alter dramatically depending on the level of skilled people we had, rather than the gear we took along.
Also, a massive GRATS on getting the Fiery Warhorse Reins, a cool looking mount and rare too - nice one! Also, I noticed a [Moroes' Pocket Watch] on your person - so I guess it can't be going that badly in Kara now. Shows just what the others 'experts' in the thread knew :)
I'll admit that I get really annoyed by troll comments and people who seem to have nothing better to do than insult people via online forums. Then I realise I should really just feel pity for them, it must take someone really unhappy or really bored to behave like that.

Just got moroes watch last night while MT'ing!
Milktub May 30th 2008 1:43PM
The forums are a fun spread.
Welcome to WoW ... Good forum. The regulars keep the tone relatively upbeat, and the trolls get ignored pretty quickly.
The rest of the forums are mostly full of whining and complaining about something that the poster feels is irreparably broken.
And realm forums are a bust. They're a mix of off-topic nonsense, guild recruitment postings that usually turn into a "your guild sucks" flame war, and unfortunate new players who quickly get bashed to nothingness.

Arjun,
I recommend to stay clear of the general forum altogether, unless you are specifically looking for drama. The class specific forums, realm forums, and other specialized forums can be a really good source of information, and like Robin says, try to have a thick skin It's inevitable that somebody will comment on your arena ratings, gear, and spec, no matter how good you feel about them.
Chris May 30th 2008 4:48PM
My first main was a 70 fire mage, and I remember those class forums! :)
Huh May 30th 2008 2:20PM
I play on quite a few realms, and occasionally view each one's realm forum. Everyone has it's fair share of trolls, but I will say Mal'Ganis has to be the absolute worst. Probably cause of overinflated egos due to it being the #1 ranked progression server for raiding. It's terrible and makes you not even want to be social.
Any lesson that I've learned is that if you do post anything anywhere, go by this one rule.. "DON'T FEED THE TROLLS" Just ignore them, if you acknowledge them in anyway they fee, try to one up them back. They've gotten what they want. "Flame = Fame"
sixhigh May 30th 2008 2:23PM
I tried cutting through the junk on the Kalecgos official forum, but it was just too much. Endless trolling and flame wars and ground zero for the crybaby '@gankwanker' posts because its pretty much their only recourse for venting at the other side on a PvP server. I'll stick with the Carebear WoWInsider tyvm.
Anshou May 30th 2008 2:26PM
Posting on our forums takes thick skin. Get over it.
Chris May 30th 2008 2:31PM
Fortunately I know other players in madhouse that don't share the same attitude.
Chris May 30th 2008 2:27PM
Arjun here - thanks all..:)
I did find a guild via General Chat - a great guild and a great fit! I OT'd Kara last week, and MT'd it this week (with a hunter OT)!
When I originally posted, I was essentially in the 70 blues that a site like wowwiki suggests, with nearly all the proper enchants for avoidance/defense/etc.
NitroNeo May 30th 2008 2:34PM
Its poor grammar, but all the trolls should try living by it.

here is a thought May 30th 2008 2:37PM
silly QQ:
as a wowTroll i am always pained when the iTroll topic comes up as I feel us wowTs are a good folk, generally helping out each other, orcs, and moos... sometimes zombies and belfs if we are in a good mood and well fed.
i think the forums are much more likely filled with nelfs, huuumunz, dwarfz, gnumz, and drainee. the nelfs must be the worst.
just, can we stop calling them trolls? maybe murlocs because they spout so much gibberish and should be ignored!
;P
Anshou May 30th 2008 2:46PM
Oh noes other members of my guild dont share my views.

Just to be helpful, the thread linked should probably be:

Seems like you had a couple of extra characters.
And in general I like my realm forums. They're fun, witty, and I like the roleplaying and stories that I find there. Happiness!
