Find and buy every single piece of +damage gear you can find in your respective school from 1-20 (Which should be Fire) It's easy to boost your damage to levels that allows you more viability against higher level mobs and multiples. What you can't find thats + fire or frost, supplement with straight up +damage gear. This helps in one way, that you start doing much more damage, and thus, have to cast less. It helps you be more mana efficient early as well. As well, doing this made it so I rarely had to use frost bolt to kill a mob before it got to me.
Other tips:
Drink early, and often.
Stick with Fire spec until about lvl 40, it's not viable below that level.

I'd give this advice only to someone making an alt who has the gold to spare. If your just rushing towards 70 this will help. But on the flip side, buying low lvl gear can be very uneconomical as you out grow gear so fast. I also think frost at early lvls is totally viable.
On a side note, I always thought it was odd that someone one would put a low level green (item lvl 20 or below) on the AH for a long amount of time with no buy out. For myself, by the time i win the action, I out lvl the item

Well Ikarus, I'd say that you're not paying close enough attention to the theory craft then. When I was leveling my mage (and I've leveled about 5 mages from 1-20) I was doing over 200+ damage. No amount of 2 or 3 points of Int, armour, stam or any other stat you can get at the level does as much good as +dam. I turned down better armor rated gear if it didn't have any +dam stats. It works. By level 30 I was doing almost +400 fire damage just in my greens and few Blues from SFK.
AT low levels other stats for mages don't really matter that much if you can get tons of +dam, and that +dam will last you a very long time. Having all that +dam allowed me to go way father forward then had I been worried about armour rating, or other stats.
Remember, armor only matters if you're getting hit, if things fall over before they ever get to you, why does your armour rating, stam, or int matter?

I understand what you mean, Ilnara, but Int & spirit can be useful because while your doing millions of damage, it's gotta cost millions of mana points, so those stats may be needed.
Also, dido on te dampen magic thing. I use dampen magic in instances as well, to the fact that with my low stam I don't need much heals, even at really low health status.
