Gearing a Holy priest for Karazhan, part one
Hello, fellow Holy priests! Are you interested in Karazhan, but have never gone yet? Maybe you want some Badges, maybe you want some nice epics, or maybe you just want to hang out with nine other folks and have some fun. But what to wear?
Well, the good news is you don't need amazing gear to start KZ. In fact, healing KZ can be easier than healing many heroics, in my experience, if only because you have another healer or two there to help you out. Of course, the better your gear is, the better your performance will be, but there are many easy-to-reach pieces of gear that will perform fine, and several that will perform amazingly, for Karazhan. Join me as I step through some recommended options.
Note that priest gearing received a fairly major change in the recent 2.4 patch, for two reasons:
- Intellect now makes our spirit work better.
- Meditation now makes 30% of our spirit work while inside the five-second rule, instead of 15%.
The second of these two changes is by far the bigger; the net effect of both of them is to make spirit even more valuable than it was, and to make int. worth a bit as well.
That said, your primary stats to focus on will be, by far, +healing and spirit, followed by int and mp5, and stamina is also nice to have as well. Spell crit is really not an important priest healing stat - don't shun it, but it will rarely be a reason to choose one piece over another.
Primal Mooncloth
If you are a tailor, and you haven't specialized yet, and you intend to be a healing priest in the long term, go for Mooncloth tailoring. I can't stress this enough. And if you are a Mooncloth tailor and you've hit 70, your number one priority should be making the Primal Mooncloth set. It is an amazing bind-on-pickup, Mooncloth-tailor only set of entry-level epics, more than worth the mats you put into it. The only piece that can be beat with Karazhan loot is the shoulders, and even then the set bonus will have you hanging onto PMC for a while yet.
The set consists of the following three pieces:
These items are tailor-made (so to speak) for priests. Covered in +heal and spirit, and did you see that set bonus? Even more Meditation! Make it, wear it, love it. The total mats are:
Obviously you can get your PMC a bit cheaper by using your own cooldowns (which will get you two pieces for the price of one), but if you're impatient and have the gold you can always just buy more off the AH.
Primal Mooncloth does have one major weakness: no stamina. To make up for this, carry some high-stam items around and swap them in as needed for particular fights (like Aran).
Whitemend
There's one more epic tailored set that's worth mentioning. Whitemend is composed of two pieces, and is bind-on-equip, which means you don't have to be a tailor to wear it.
It's also a lot easier to get made for you now that Primal Nethers are not BoP - you don't have to find a tailor who both knows the pattern and has a Nether they're willing to use. The total mats for Whitemend are:
- 20 Primal Mooncloth
- 10 Primal Might
- 2 Primal Nether
Due to the 2.4 changes, this set is not nearly as good as it once was. In fact, overall it's about on par with the relevant Hallowed pieces (see next section) - but that's not counting the set bonus, which is decent if not imba. If you don't already have good items for those slots, and you've got the cash, Whitemend is a good way to fill them, but it's not nearly as high-priority as PMC.
Dungeon Set 3: Hallowed
Just like back in original WoW, every class has a set of blues obtainable through regular 5-man dungeons that's oriented towards them in particular. For us, it's the Hallowed Raiment. These are actually pretty good pieces overall, although if you've followed my advice and grabbed the PMC set you won't have room for enough to get the four-piece bonus. Doesn't matter much; the four-piece is just OK, and the two-piece is utter garbage.
I'll discuss the individual pieces more when I go through the slot-by-slot breakdown, but here's all the items and where they come from:
- Hallowed Crown - Harbinger Skyriss, Arcatraz
- Hallowed Garments - Murmer, Shadow Labyrinth
- Hallowed Handwraps - Kargath Bladefist, Shattered Halls
- Hallowed Pauldrons - Vorpil, Shadow Labyrinth
- Hallowed Trousers - Talon King Ikiss, Sethekk Halls
Slot-by-slot
Now that we've gotten a few sets out of the way, let's get to the heart of this post: for each slot, what are some relatively easy-to-obtain items that will serve you well in Karazhan? I'll list items for each slot in order of preference (unless otherwise noted). This part will cover the first half of the slots, and the rest will be found in part two.
You'll see that I've listed an enchantment for all relevant slots. Enchant your gear. If you don't, you're really not getting the most out of it. Some of the more expensive enchants can wait until you get a great item, but for things like the Major Spirit to chest enchant, there's no excuse not to put it on anything half-decent that you have. Gems will be discussed in part two.
I'm not mentioning most of the high-cost Badge of Justice gear, since I figure if you're running that many heroics you probably have decent gear already, but there is some really good stuff sold by Hauthaa, the new Badge vendor. I'm currently saving up for the Adorned Supernal Legwraps myself.
Head
- If you happen to be an engineer, the Powerheal 4000 Lens (BoP engineering) is pretty great, but most priests just don't seem to be engineers.
- Hallowed Crown is a nice, solid item, if you can get it to drop from Skyriss in the Arcatraz (one of my least favorite instances). Either this or Whitemend is your best bet if you're not an engineer.
- Whitemend Hood is better than Hallowed Crown if, and only if, you have the Whitemend Pants as well for the set bonus, and you may find it easier to get.
Enchant
There's really only one game in town when it comes to an enchantment to put on your headpiece as a priest, and it's the Glyph of Renewal from Honor Hold/Thrallmar revered. It costs 90g; suck it up and slap it on the first decent headpiece you get.
Neck
- If you're exalted with Aldor/Scryer, go for the Shattered Sun Pendant of Restoration. Getting exalted with the Shattered Sun Offensive, if you're not already, is pretty darn easy (and profitable, too), and this is a great necklace if you're getting one of the proc benefits.
- If you PvP much, the Vindicator's Pendant of Salvation is nice.
- If you don't PvP and you're not exalted with Aldor/Scryer (and you don't want to put in the effort to get there), aim for one of these drops:
- Swampstone Necklace (Musel'ek, Underbog)
- Diamond Prism of Recurrence (Epoch Hunter, Old Hillsbrad)
- Choker of Fluid Thought (Skyriss, Arcatraz)
Shoulder
- Your best bet here really is Primal Mooncloth Shoulders.
- If you're not doing that, though, the Hallowed Pauldrons (Vorpil, Shadow Labyrinth) are probably the next best.
Enchant
Not much choice here; go for the healing inscription from your Aldor/Scryer quartermaster, the major one if you have the rep for it.
Cloak
These two are neck-and-neck in my opinion; get whichever comes easiest. I'm currently rocking the Manaweave Cloak since the Avian Cloak just kept refusing to drop for me.
- Avian Cloak of Feathers (Talon King Ikiss, Sethekk Halls)
- Manaweave Cloak (BoE tailoring: 10 Spellcloth, 12 Primal Mana, 1 Primal Nether)
Enchant
Subtlety. Pulling aggro is bad; pulling aggro in raids is very bad. It's kind of expensive, but either of the two cloaks above will last you a while.
Chest
- Again, the Primal Mooncloth Robe is better than anything you can find in Karazhan, let alone before it.
- But if you're not doing PMC, go for the Hallowed Garments (Murmur, Shadow Labyrinth).
- Anchorite's Robes, from Aldor honored rep, are also decent.
Enchant
Major Spirit. Spirit is great, and enchants don't get much cheaper than this. Restore Mana Prime is inferior with the recent changes.
Wrist
- Wristguards of Tranquil Thought (35 BoJ). These things are amazing. If you have the badges, you can get yourself a piece that won't be replaced before T5.
- Bands of the Benevolent (Talon King Ikiss, Heroic Sethekk Halls)
- Vindicator's Mooncloth Cuffs (12k honor, 20 WSG marks)
- Light Scribe Bands (Nazan, Heroic Hellfire Ramparts)
- Bracers of Divine Infusion (Vexallus, Magister's Terrace)
Enchant
Superior Healing. This one is a little bit expensive, so if you're feeling strapped for cash you might wait until you get Bands of the Benevolent or Wristguards of Tranquil Thought, or Bands of Indwelling from KZ.

The Cloak of Swift Mending from MgT (Normal) is better than the ones you listed. (in my humble opinion)
Good article. I'd love to see more gear columns for the t5/t6 raids!

I don't think spell haste is too useful for a priest starting t4, but it's true that that's another decent option. The regen on the cloaks I listed put them above Swift Mending IMO, but if you are good on mana longevity Swift Mending will give you more throughput (especially as compared to Manaweave, which has no +heal).
ErsatzPotato Jun 1st 2008 8:35PM
White Remedy Cape is also another crafted BoE option. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24254
+59 heal, 7 MP5. No stats, boo, but can put it on at 69. It's also much cheaper than the Manaweave.
Nice write up. Maybe insert a rough estimate of +heal, regen, and stam to aim for? I realize those numbers have a ton of wiggle room but having totals makes choosing between two pieces for a given slot easier.
Eliah Hecht Jun 1st 2008 9:12PM
Estimates of stat levels will be contained in part two. Sit tight; that should be up in a few days.
However, it occurs to me that I might as well tell you what I have there: +1400 heal, 400 spirit (fully buffed) are reasonable values to aim for IMO.
Eh? Jun 3rd 2008 6:34AM
Actually, ~ 1400 +healing, 400 spirit, and approx 9000 mana pool fully buffed ARE the generally accepted recommendations for starting Kara =)
However, there are also other alternatives for cloaks available:
Cloak of Scintillating Auras - http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28373
Vicar's Cloak - http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25810
Neither of these have as much pure regen as the others, but Scintillating Auras does have some Stam on it as well, along with the same +healing and same INT of Feathers, and almost as much spirit as Manaweave. BUT, it does drop off the first boss of Arcatraz (duh duh duuuuuh), and doesn't have the spirit + mp/5 that feathers does. However, it IS the FIRST boss of arcatraz, therefore much easier to farm for =)
The other cloak is a QUEST REWARD for horde in Thrallmar (alliance have a similar quest with http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25805 Mantle of Vivication as a reward). And so, as long as you can get a group to kill Kargath, this is a guaranteed thing.
Just a couple of other options =)

I have a holy priest alt and did Primal Mooncloth set since it seemed like a quick way to get her geared up and stay useful at the lower raid levels. Ultimately, i feel like it turned into far more of a liability than a help because of the low stamina.
The replacement pieces in karazhan rarely dropped and individually, never seemed like such a super upgrade when compared with the hit in +healing and the loss of the set bonus. I also kind of felt like if i wasnt using my set items, i was wasting my tailoring spec, which made passing items to our other healer like the robes from opera even easier.
Shade was always a problem due to my low health and eventually when we moved onto gruul's, mag and ZA, i was always a liability due to all the splash damage. Even with all the epics i could get out of Kara that werent the robes shoulders and belt, i was hard pressed to break 8k stamina raid buffed.
Fortunately, it was an alt, so it wasnt much of an issue, but even now with some of the better drops available to me like za, arena and finally the tier 4 pants, my health still feels low.
Majikk Jun 1st 2008 8:49PM
Hmm, 8k health buffed isn't too bad imo, for a healer, Currently my holy pally has 9377 hp fully buffed (3/6 SSC 1/4 TK) and I have no problem surviving Leo's Whirlwind, Getting hit by Void Reaver's Orbs (aslong as I can heal myself back up after the silence) Surviving Maggy's Thingy where the roof falls in at 30%, generally, a healer's health isnt too bad, aslong as you can survive 1 or 2 pieces of splash/aoe damage, isnt too important as you can heal yourself back up again...

I started out with the Whitemend / PMC sets and I would mix in a few pieces of the Mooncloth PvP set to increase my stam on fights like Aran, which really made a difference. One piece is available for purchase from each of the Outlands factions when you hit honored with them. I also used Elixir of Major Fortitude and either Feltail Delight or Spicy Crawdad as my buff food, depending upon what I had on hand.
One of the first things I got (and still wear in my standard set) is the Vindicator's Pendant of Salvation. It's a great piece if you're looking to increase your health, with +34 stam (it's a great piece overall, actually). A few marathon Alterac Valley sessions for honor and some EoTS for the tokens and you're good to go. The Season 4 Guardian version will have slightly better stats if you want to wait.
A friend gave me the Astralaan Orb of the Physician for an offhand: +23 Stamina, +15 Intellect, +34 Healing. It gives a great mix of stats for a non-epic piece (the "of the Hierophant" version gives +15 Spirit instead of Int). Likewise, I got the Draenethyst Wand of the Physician with +13 Stamina, +8 Intellect and +19 Healing. They're green but good, so be sure to check your AH. (Bah ... jumping ahead to slots covered next time ... but they're good stamina pieces for people just starting Kara.)

I asked this question in the other forum earlier but didn't get the answer I needed.
Is it still worth it to take that much effort and gear up at this point when Wrath is coming out "soon"? I won't be playing much until September and was wondering if I should still work my butt off to gear up my priest with Whitemend and Primal Mooncloth sets. Will they become obsolete when Wrath comes out? I don't want to waste my gold and effort if I can only use them for a month or so.
Thanks.
Eliah Hecht Jun 1st 2008 9:14PM
My best estimate, and the general opinion around the WoW Insider staffroom, is that Wrath will be out in November or December. Yes, PMC and Whitemend will probably be obsolete by level 75. However, in my opinion they aren't that hard to acquire. Ultimately it's up to you how much you want to raid heal vs how much effort you want to put into preparing for it. I would recommend to prioritize PMC over Whitemend though; it's much stronger for the slots.
ErsatzPotato Jun 1st 2008 9:44PM
PMC has forgiving mats. If you remember to log in to hit all your timers and find a DPS buddy with herbalism to tag along with in NE to kill and "skin" the fungals for life motes you'll have it in no time. If you don't fish, do some dailies a couple times a week to buy the waters. The dailies will give all the cloth you need, and greens to DE for the dust.
While not as crazily overpowered as the DPS caster tailor sets, it's truly great stuff. I'd be very surprised if it survives to 75 but it's absolutely worth getting now.
Naix Jun 2nd 2008 10:04AM
You will replace everything you have by level 74 with greens.

"However, it occurs to me that I might as well tell you what I have there: +1400 heal, 400 spirit (fully buffed) are reasonable values to aim for IMO."
1k-1200 +heal are perfectly adequate for starting Kara on a priest. I ran Kara in the first 2 months after release of TBC and had 1K +heal upon entry into Kara and did just fine. The content has been significantly nerfed since then, and priests have had some nice buffs since then. 1400 +heal is great--but not required.
Hurode Jun 1st 2008 10:39PM
I figure this is as good a place as any to ask.
I'm working on my first main, a priest, currently level 52. I enjoy healing, and even have my level 70 23/38/0 build picked out. This is my question.
I theorize that by the time I get to 70, get geared for kara, and start raiding a bit, Wrath will be out. Especially because I'm also leveling a paladin, also hopefully 70 pretty soon, to grind for mats and such with. Is it really worth it to be so concerned with the 70 endgame, when I'm as far off as I am and Wrath is right around the corner ready to bring the 80 endgame? It'd be cool to see some of the content, but it really isn't a major priority to me right now, and I guess my question is should it be? It doesn't really seem worth it to me to spend so much money and time on gear I'll be upgrading in just a few months.
Eliah Hecht Jun 1st 2008 10:42PM
I would say see how long it takes you to get to 70 and how you're feeling then; just focus on leveling for now.
jessica Jun 2nd 2008 12:42PM
I'm surpised you didn't even meniont the reputation battlegear (http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/04/22/outline-reputation-set-priest-holy-mooncloth-battlegear/) Yes it's pvp gear but hey it's high stamina, and resil means that your a little less squishy, so it's a good way to supplement the stamina-less PMC gear.

oooh! this looks so useful.
As a 68 enhance shammy with my guild getting ready to start kara it would be super helpful if there was something like this for enhance shammies!

You mean like this:
http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/05/29/totem-talk-into-medivhs-tower-and-beyond/
Hold tight, he's going to cover gearing Thursday.
I'll give you a clue though.
http://www.wowhead.com/?itemset=659
Gem head and shoulders with Sovereign Nightseyes in Blue socket.
Gem chest with 3 Inscribed Noble Topaz (you might as well get the socket bonus)
Ignore the socket bonus for everything else and put in Bold Living Rubies.
Meta Gem is a Relentless Earthstorm Diamond.
There, you will now do some crazy DPS for Kara.
Yes, that is a druid set. The Mail set sucks for shaman as it focuses too much on Int because it was designed for hunters.
We don't need Int. Shamanistic Rage fills your blue bar of death dealing well enough to not care, even with the nerf.
