Breakfast Topic: A waste of money
Aysel is a little ashamed about spending 1000g on a title, though she shouldn't be -- "of the Shattered Sun" is as honorable a title as any other, and if you've got the money to get it, more power to you (though her suggestion that her guildies call her AOTSS is pretty funny). But I like her other question better: what's the dumbest thing you've ever spent a bunch of ingame gold on? My waste of money is probably more of a mistake than an actual embarrassment -- I remember spending a good 100g to outfit my level 40 Mage in the shiniest stuff I could find on the AH, including a couple of world drops and the whole shabang. I had in mind that I was going to take her all the way to 70 -- and then I think I never played her again. What a waste.
I'm sure you all have better stories, though -- ever accidentally dropped a lot of cash on something you couldn't actually use, or splurge on an item that was a little silly, just so you could have it? What's the most money you've ever wasted on anything in the game, and what did you buy?

Oh yes definately! I have a little level 14 Shaman that was going to be an engineer AND a jewelcrafter. So I bought tons of wool and copper and bronze to get her crafting up to 150...and she's sat at level 14 for about 2 months now. >

my shaman's Engineer/JC. It's a nice combo. JC makes money, Engineering eats it.

It's not a massive waste, but when I saw my JCing Holy Paladin could craft Kailee's Rose I got so excited that I bought 6 Living Rubies off the AH and immediately proceeded to cut 6 of them.
Immediately afterwards I realized it said Unique-Equipped.
So now 5 of them in sit in the bank. I suppose perhaps if I replace the piece it is in I'd use another, but I doubt I'll really ever use all 6...

lol I did exactly the same with a few other BoP gems :D

Green gems. At one point, you could vendor gems for a fair chunk of change (think it was 1g), and my tooltip mod reflected this price. I never knew that they changed this, so one day I was looking at auctioneer prices for gems, and looking at the tooltip, realized that I could make a good 50% or so profit from buying out and vendoring them...and thought I was about to find a new way to get easy income.
As it turns out, every single one I bought was way over the vendor price...I think I lost about 150g. And of course, if I'd held on to them all this time like I probaby should have, I'd have still made a profit after this most recent patch, so I think I really lost a good several hundred gold all told.

I spent 75 gold on two copies of sword that give good +agi (since i'm a hunter) and didn't realized until i had already drop the gold, that, both of those sword are "main-hand" ARGH!!

I bought the recipe for the Khorium Champion for 300G hoping to turn it around and sell it quickly for a slight profit. Turns out with the new inflated mats costs, nobody ever wants to buy this.
Maybe I'll level blacksmithing on an alt or something...

I bought and enchanted two swords for my rogue and then realized they were both main hand. AUGH. *facepalm*

A guildie mage bought +heal badge reward bracers by mistake... kind of. The +damage on them was better than on their crappy greens so they genuinely though it was an upgrade.

I bought my way to exalted with Aldor. I was already revered, and I bought about 100G worth of ... Mark of Kil'jaeden, doh!

I spent 2000 gold on Don Santos' Hunting Rifle, and 500g putting a scope on it.
3 days later I got Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle from kara.

I keep catching myself being reluctant to spend cash/badges on stuff if I might get a 5% drop that's better... ultimately you have to buy the kit you need, and if you get a better drop, try and be happy about it! Another 500g for a scope is well worth it.

Grinded 5000g for my alt to farm herbs, realizing after I bought it that it is faster and more economical to do daily quests and buy the pots off the AH rather than farm mats for them. Oh well...

The 5k grind wasn't a total waste. With wrath's release about the only thing of value you'll be taking into it will be your riding skills and maybe a 2 minute trinket ;)

Useless purchases :
- lvl 40 mount for a character I stopped playing right after that. (that was before BC)
- as soon as the primal nethers weren't bound anymore, I sent one to my lvl 65 warlock alt to craft the engineering googles.
I had stopped playing her almost a year ago and haven't played her since, but having T5 level gear on a lvl 65 char seemed so great. : /

Leveling alchemy at release, then dropping it for tailoring, then dropping tailoring to pick up alchemy for the sexy stone ;)
Getting blacksmithing to 375 on another alt was kind of a waste of money as well.
Kaylek Jun 3rd 2008 8:27AM
No, it's true, it's a waste of money.
Waterloo Jun 3rd 2008 8:28AM
I leveled Enchanting to 350-ish, but I never raid so I never get any of the really good patterns.
I'd drop it today, but I spent all that gold...
/cry

The ring enchants are nice, and the only way to get anything on a ring. Mats are reasonable too.

Once I had bought two beautiful, expensive blue axes for my alt shaman to use when he grew in level but i decided to put these up on AH because i was going abroad for over a month and i wasnt sure i wanted to play this shaman anymore and i rather wanted my money back. well, i went on ahead and put these on ah and the day before my trip i saw that "a buyer has been found". I was glad of course that i would get my hard-earned gold back! Only i didnt.... i forgot to log in again to pick up the gold from the mailbox... and when i arrived back home a month later there was no mail waiting for me.... about 150G lost :)
