The Brewfest Kodo and what it may mean for WotLK's release date

Tipster Graffias pointed out an exciting find in the latest leaked Alpha files for WoTLK: An Icon for a Brewfest Kodo. You may recall that last year's Brewfest included a Ram mount that was purchasable with tickets by both sides, allowing the Horde very easy access to an Alliance mount with a few days of grinding for Brewfest Prize Tickets. Many Alliance weren't happy with this, annoyed that the Horde got such easy access to an Alliance mount without having to kill Baron Rivendare or a Troll a couple hundred times. Bornakk decided that the best way to answer this criticism would be by promising the Alliance that the Horde would be getting access to yet another previously alliance-only mount skin in the Cenarion War Hippogryph. Of course, Kisirani, being as awesome as she is, later said that we should have patience and things would work out in the end.
Listening to the words of the world designer seem to have paid off, as it looks like the Dwarves are going to turn the tables on the Goblins this year and steal some Kodos from them. I can finally fulfill my dream of owning my very own Kodo. My Night Elf Druid is from Kalimdor after all, and you would think there would be some Night Elves who decided to domesticate Kodos as beasts of burden too.
But really, as much as I am looking forward to grabbing myself a Kodo (and seeing a tiny Gnome riding around on a huge beast of burden), what's really exciting is this thought: If the Brewfest is in late September to early October, does that mean Blizzard is planning to give us WoTLK by September, Brewfest Kodo and all?
If they aren't planning to give us one more year with nothing but a Ram, that could be the plan. Release WoTLK and the patch with the Kodo some time in mid-September, and we'll suddenly be stuck with the horrible choice of leveling to 80 as soon as possible, working on a Death Knight, or grabbing enough tickets to buy a Kodo.
Still, while it's nice to think about WoTLK going live by the start of Brewfest, it's not a given either. It's possible that we could still get the Brewfest Kodo, only in a seperate patch. After all, Patch 2.0.1 gave us access to 41 point talents, the LFG system, and a few other new features from Burning Crusade in a patch that predated the expansion itself. It's certainly possible that Blizzard will once again do the same, handing us a 3.0 patch that'll bring in the 51 point talents, a few other new features, and the new Brewfest Kodo as well.
Either way though, I figure we win. If this leak really does point to a purchasable Kodo at the next Brewfest, we might get WoTLK over a month earlier than is widely expected, but even if we don't, we still get an awesome new prize to shoot for when the Brewfest returns to Azeroth. If we're even more lucky here on the Alliance side, maybe we'll even get new goggles that'll turn everyone into female Draenei instead of male Gnomes.

Since people are quoting the past to determine a future release date, and then saying it is common sense, I suppose a little real common sense is in order:
Has it occurred to you that WLK is significantly larger in size and scope than TBC (in terms of sheer number of new items)?
You can quote numbers all you want, but I will believe WLk is here when I am logging into Northrend on a live realm. Everything you say about release date is fantastical speculation and nothing more.

Can you provide a solid argument as to why not, without going through the logic yourself and saying "well okay yeah I guess it could be Septemberish"?
I don't think you can, unless you're just making up things based on absolutely nothing at all. BC's release schedule fits the time line... and lets be honest, 4 new starting zones and 2 new races doesn't compare very well in terms of complexity to one new starting zone for Death Knights and Death Knights, but I think it's safe to say it'll be easier to test DK's than it was to run so many people through 70 full levels of the game, which they had to do for BC.
I mean honestly, what markers are you paying attention to if you seriously have such a pessimistic view? Based on the speed of the last release, I'd say that they're even farther along in terms of testing and development than we were at the same pre-launch point on the calendar. Plus, they had to deal with holidays, and there are none of those during the summer... so even shaving a couple of weeks off development time would be reasonable as well. (unless they cancelled everyone's thanksgiving and xmas, I dunno).

Other than my own general pessimism, I base my incredulity regarding a September release date on the fact that WLK has approximately 3x the number of new items as TBC.
Also, little tidbits I see on the internet like this:
http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Wrath-Lich-Expansion/dp/B000VJTJNE
Maybe this is a typo, maybe not, but I find the date compelling, since it is close to what I think is the likely date of release.
I must point out that I think those of us who think Sept/Oct is reasonable are just doing so because we are impatient and want it to be released.

Itemization is one of last aspects of development that could cause a delay in the expansion. The foundation for asset management has long been established, not to mention the extremely large established base of reusable assets already in game.
You can't justify an extended development cycle just because "Wrath has more items". WOW's foundation has made Wrath capable of having so many new items introduced.
But with that said, it's more important to consider the marketing calendar. November is a Christmas holiday release, an extremely ideal release date, while Sept./Oct. is a good time for "back to school" marketing, but a bad time for entertainment marketing.
Going from kodo mount to Wrath release is a very broad, ambitious and ultimately way overly optimistic leap of faith. There's no correlation between the two whatsoever.
You'll hear it officially at Blizzcon that we'll see Wrath in November. The only correlation between BC and Wrath is that they're more inclined to be on schedule, rather than delayed beyond it.

The last option is that this year will only have the ram and NEXT year will have the Kodo. Unlikely but possible.
GG leaking Alpha news. BTW.
Corazu Jun 4th 2008 4:57PM
I don't really think this counts as releasing Alpha news..it's a file spec from the alpha content - not related to WOTLK technically. The post is entirely speculative beyond that piece of information.

Just like WoW 2.0 came out about a month and a half (?) before TBC, it could be that WoW 3.0, or whatever the new version of the client is, is slated to come out sometime in the fall. This would fit with WotLK having a release sometime near Christmas.
xzor Jun 4th 2008 1:34PM
if they just allow tarens to ride all of the horde mounts ill be happy. that and fix the UC elevator, with the dismount - fall to your death bug.
Jones Jun 4th 2008 1:34PM
I'm guessing WOTLK will be out around January or February
Anyways, my 70 Gnome Rogue is going to love a Kodo, nice upgrade from his Swift Blue Elekk
Brimoonfang Jun 4th 2008 1:37PM
Well, this is disappointing.
I've been riding around on my Kodo since my Tauren Druid hit level 40. Guess I'll have to find something more distinctive now (since I can't use Swift Flight Form in Azeroth or Northrend at the moment).
Maybe I'll go summon Anzu another hundred times and hope he drops the Reins of the Raven Lord...

Blizz recently put a lot of effort into revamping the Summer Holiday, I imagine they're putting in a little extra effort to revamp Brewfest to keep us occupied until WotLK. I would be exceptionally suprised if WotLK was out in Sept.
Thander Jun 4th 2008 1:53PM
I think Brewfest will come out with 3.0. Wrath will come out in November or December. It would fit the pattern of Classic -> TBC. 2.0 came out in December followed by the expansion in February, a two month period.
Anomis Jun 4th 2008 2:12PM
expansion was jan not feb
Jack Spicer Jun 4th 2008 1:56PM
I don't expect WotLK until February.
h8rain Jun 4th 2008 1:57PM
I did not do the ticket grind last year, because a ram for my druid (night elf) just seemed....meh. Now I like dinosaurs and would definitely grind tickets for that!
Painhealer Jun 4th 2008 2:23PM
They wife has always wanted a kodo since she first saw them, this will be good news if true.
JPN Jun 4th 2008 2:07PM
I hope the ram is still available, my PC was broken during all of Brewfest :(
Elmo Jun 4th 2008 2:09PM
Having an Draenei Male as main I feel I need large mounts.
(Netherdrake, Elekk)
and because I've always been a fan of Kodo's...
if this turns out to be true
I MUST GET ONE!!
Thijz Jun 4th 2008 2:12PM
Come on guys, does everything have to be linked to WoWhead, some subcategory on this website or some article that basically has very little to do with the hyperlink?
Zali Jun 4th 2008 2:19PM
I speculate that if we continue to speculate as much as we speculate now, the speculating will continue and Blizzard will continue to release stuff whenever they are bloody well ready to. Of course, thats just speculation.
