All the World's a Stage: How to be a death knight
When you decide to roleplay, a whole new world of imagination opens up to you -- soon you realize that all the World of Warcraft is a stage, and all the orcs and humans merely players.Last week, we took a look at how roleplaying a death knight will be different from roleplaying other classes, because death knights come pre-packaged with elements of a backstory for you to flesh out: they have, for whatever reason, at one time joined forces with the Lich King, learned from him how to be a death knight, and now are breaking free of his influence and striking out against him.
As Medeni pointed out in her comments, however, this can potentially lead to a kind of unlikable "celebrity in rehab" type of personality. Imagine, if you will, the death knight known as Marisoo: formerly a paladin of the Light, she sought to destroy the Scourge that plagued her homeland of Lordaeron, but eventually, as she was consumed with vengeance and hatred, she joined the Lich King instead of destroying him. Having learned to turn corpses into slavering ghouls and call forth armies of the undead, she eventually thought better of the whole "wickedly destroy all life" thing and decided to destroy the Lich King after all, only this time she would use his own power against him! Muahaha.
As you can see, there are some pretty obvious flaws in this idea. First of all, the first half of it is almost a direct copy of Arthas' own tale, and, while I can certainly appreciate the power of that story, and the possibility that other paladins could have gone through something similar, roleplayers who want to play a death knight character must realize that it's going to get old fast. Just as death knights aren't just human paladins, we can't all go around copying Arthas, brooding on how moody and wicked we've become. We have to come up with new ideas that fit the death knight mould.
So today I decided to see if I could come up with several death knight "template" characters, which could serve as inspiration for roleplayers already thinking about their own approach to this problem. Feel free to leave your own template characters in a comment, or to create template characters of other races and classes as well, if you desire.
One rule I'm trying to stick to here is that all these characters are basically good. They became death knights without truly becoming evil, or if they originally joined the Scourge with evil intent, they have some plausible reason why they would later on turn against it. In some cases, the character might not be "good" so much as "opposed to the evil guys bent on destroying all life," for some reason. Also, in some cases, I'm trying to go for a very light-hearted, humorous, or even innocent approach to the character, in so much as that is possible with a death knight.
Unwilling servant
You were once some sort of warrior fighting the scourge, but like Sylvanas and Highlord Mograine, Arthas defeated you and decided to raise you from the dead to serve him afterwards. For a long time, you have longed to be freed of this slavery and corruption, and now, with the help of other death knights who are breaking free of Arthas' control, you too are gaining your freedom. Now, you are trying to pick up the pieces of your broken life, gathering what you have left to form something new, some shred of hope to cling to.
This fits best with forsaken characters, who are obviously undead, but if you can choose some sort of pale skin color and make another race look mostly dead, then it could work with them too. Don't try to pull this off with your typical ruddy blond hero -- death knights certainly aren't all undead, but this one is, and if you aren't going to be forsaken, then you'll need to find another way to make him look the part. Also, be aware that this type of story has been done lots of times before, so you should try to make yours unique in some way, without being melodramatic. Perhaps, if you died in a particularly embarrassing or ironic way, for instance, your character could play off lots of cliches in the horror genre and also make other people laugh without being a total farce.
Survivor
You were just a youth at the time the Scourge came through and destroyed your hometown. At the time you joined the Scourge out of fear, thinking it was your only way to survive, but all along you planned to leave it if the chance came. You found others like you, and together nurtured one another's courage until the time to strike finally arrives.
This could work for humans, orcs, or blood elves, all of whom could have suffered at the hands of the Scourge during the Third War. Humans and elves in and around Lordaeron obviously got invaded by the Scourge, and there were orcs in concentration camps around that area as well. Dwarves (and maybe gnomes too) could have conceivably been caught in Muradin's lost expedition or something, with somewhat similar results. Trolls, tauren, night elves, forsaken and of course draenei would not have been in the right time and place for this story to make sense for them, however.
Forbidden knowledge
You come from a culture that loves nature and life, but for a long time you were tempted to know what this corrupt death magic is all about. The more your people warned you against it, the more you wanted to know until you finally set out for Northrend to just have a look. Needless to say, you were intrigued and took up your studies with enthusiasm, only to be horrified at the depth of corruption being a death knight involved. Now, breaking free of the Scourge, you know it is too late to go back to your own people and ask for forgiveness, but you hope that by your example, you can prevent others from following your path.
This story could work well for tauren and night elves. It could also be called "recovering drug addict," and it's different from "celebrity in rehab" mostly because the character doesn't have any pretensions of being cool or unique. He or she just wanted to know a lot of things that shouldn't be known, and now wishes to make good of this mistake.
Frankenstein
You used to go digging up graves, trying to assemble various body parts together and zapping them with electricity, but nothing ever seemed to work, no matter how loudly you shouted "It's alive!" Being a loner type, you didn't have many friends to talk you out of dumb ideas, so you decided to go and find out what really made life work by learning about undeath straight from the Lich King himself. Now that you've become a death knight and all, you've realized that Arthas is a nasty sort and you don't want his kind running things, but you're still convinced that if you could just get those assorted limbs, brains, and intestines arranged in the right way and infused with the right quantity of mystical energies, you could create not some ghastly monster, but a real living creature, albeit a rather ugly one.
This idea is tailor fit to gnomes, but it could work for a number of other races as well, since all races are capable of becoming engineers, and anyone can be bitten with the lust for scientific advancement. This character could be a serious commentary on philosophical issues like the original Frankenstein was, but it seems more fun to fill him up with fun references more in the vein of Young Frankenstein. Any horde race other than blood elves could even get away with calling themselves "Igor," "Igorina," or some variation thereof.
Religious ascetic
While most religions in WoW, such as the Holy Light, Shamanism, and worship of Elune (Elunism?), are focused on reaching some sort of enlightenment through virtues, good deeds and the like, there could be a subset of mystics who seek spiritual enlightenment through direct, face-to-face confrontation with the grotesque realities of life, just like real life people who sometimes undertake tantric rituals. Some, such as blood elves, may see this as the key to freeing themselves from an existing problem or addition, even though it goes in the face of everything their people stands for.
This concept suits blood elves most of all, but I could see it made to fit any race except gnomes (who tend not to be all that religious in their worldview).
That's a review of the best ideas I came up with. Can you think up some more? I'd be especially interested in plausible death knights that were either humorous or innocent or both.

Here's one idea that can keep the villainy 100% intact: It's been, in the game's timeline, a good five or six years since the Lich King "ascended". Between now and then, that's surely a lot of time for a knight to grow distant from the lord they've been following, and have become basically a solitary, entirely self-serving individual, allied to the Scourge in name only. This self-serving Death Knight might finally see something where the balance shifts dramatically--the Alliance and Horde are making a landing in Northrend, a war is brewing, and the Lich King doesn't seem to be too keen on telling anyone what to do.
And so, in a bout of total selfishness and egotism, drops the Scourge allegiance entirely and swears "loyalty" to the newcomers, the side that looks so readily poised to win.
Hell, and it's not even that unlikely. Look back--the Horde and Alliance, whether seperately or together, have already, in terms of accomplishments, purged Blackrock Spire, defeated the sleeping Fire Lord beneath and slaying the Dragon lord up top, beat the Qiraji into a pulp on their home territory, nigh-effortlessly kicked a Scourge invasion from the doorstep and sent Naxxramas back with it's tail between it's legs, subsequently stormed through the Dark Portal and swept as a tide of destruction across the remnants of Outland, taking out such powerful, seemingly unstoppable foes as Vashj, Kael'thas, and the Betrayer, handed the host of the Burning Legion it's own ass on a platter, and as the coup de grace, violently stomped Kil'jaeden right back into the Sunwell.
And now this ravening host of warriors, unfathomably numerous and far, far too ballsy for it's own good, has set it's sights on Northrend.
From the perspective of an itinerant Death Knight, especially one more concerned with their own skin than anything else, the choice is really not that hard.

Someone I know's idea is, roughly, for a Dwarf who gets so completely blitzed and absolutely drunk, he later wakes up at the Death Knight Academy in full gear with no idea how he got there.

Mine is a BE who fought the Scourge's advance towards the Sunwell. Seeing that he was strong in magic, Arthas ordered him taken alive. Arthas then gives him a grave choice:become a death knight, and do the Lich King's will, or be killed, and be raised as a ghoul to serve in mindless undeath for eternity.
He takes the obvious choice. He becomes a death knight. He seeds chaos across the world, kills thousands. Then when the Lich King's power is weakened, he escapes. Upon return to his homeland, he finds his family slaughtered by his own hand. Now, his only motivation is vengance, and to that end he throws in with the horde, so he may have his chance to deliver death to Arthas.

I AM AROYY THE PALADIN, defender of the alliance. after fighting the scourge for three days straight im exhausted and my best friend and healer , valnazor, has just fallen and i im crying whilist fighting for my life against thousands at a time. finally im taken down. i awake in a dark place , i appear to be in my mind. the lich king stands before me . after fighting him for what feels like months i awaken in the inside of some kind of 'floating castle" being sorrounded with undead .i feel weak. i scream at the light while getting no response. as my face is flooding with tears i kill everything i see. i break out to see my land in ruins and i bow to take my vengeance if it kills me.

I don't play on RP servers, but I like to give my characters a bit of extra personality and background, even if it is just all in my head. For example, my Forsaken Priest is merely Aleksandra, but from the beginning I thought of her as a former member of a family of petty nobility from Stratholme who had trained in a convent there, and took up that path again after she fell and was born again. After I first went to Stratholme in the game, I started calling her "Aleksandra Rivendare," in my own head.
But what you said about the "unwilling servant," and why I'm commenting, basically hit my idea on the head. I was thinking that he (or she) would be a Blood Elf, formerly a Blood Knight (though this could work for any class), whose heart and soul was shattered when he discovered Kael'thas's betrayal of his people in Outland, and who threw himself into the Plaguelands alone, hoping to die an honorable death there, but who was remade a Death Knight by the Scourge instead. His defection to the rebels is simply, perhaps to the point of being a cliche, a natural extension of his hopeless struggle against the Scourge, only this time with the added fury of being robbed of his noble end. He'd be less of a "celebrity in rehab," and more of a "celebrity who survived a suicide attempt," albeit one who's filled with bucket's o' fury.
Anyway, thanks for the article, it was a neat read!

Here is another kind of Death Knight. A unique (so far) little story from the RP server Shadow Council.

Actually, ironically Id wanted a Death Knight or similar thing ever since signing onto WoW. I like the dark stuff, what can I say? So I rolled a paladin, half expecting to have to RP some weird ass story to explain why an evil guy gets access to the Light.
Thankfully, I didnt have to. What I did was this. My paladin was something of a loner, always running around doing this thing, being helpful in his own way, but having actually seen life for what it is in his 75 yrs on Azeroth, became a bit of a cynic. Even his early life had something to do with it, vague memories about his mother running from a horde of low-lvl legion demons and her husband. His father, it turns out, seeking a cure for the magical addiction thing, went to Kil'Jaeden's side and became sort of a prototype felblood elf(this was before I ever stepped into Outlands, so kodos to me for thinking similar I suppose).
And the fel taint was transmitted to his son. Another guy in the guild was basically falling to the Scourge and becoming an follower of Arthas, so we RP'd it that my paladin would just *snap* whenever the rogue(his char at the time, he's become a frost mage since then, same name) was around and go into a sort of berserker rage with a sort of fire aura to boot(inverse of the fire resist aura).
Eventually with help from a few of the holy priests we managed to contain the prescence and give Llaiir the ability to eventually purge it. But, energy cannot be created or destroyed, so it has to go somewhere right? Behold a waiting undead body. No mind, no will of its own, and the Lich King certainly has proven able to lose grip. So this dark half of a paladin finds a body, and with the potential he'd have, becomes a Death Knight. Being stubborn and independent like the original, he breaks loose and decides to make his own way, going against the Scourge because NOBODY DARES CONTROL ME!(character emphasis), and working with Llaiir because, in some twisted sense, thats his father, his progenitor. Same basic personality, just one went the way of the Light, the other of course didnt.

My only problem with all this stuff is.
You die in battle in epl
The Lich King raises your dead arse to serve him.
Thats how you become a dk, you kind of have to die.
Arthas is exceptional because of frostmourne, which is no ordinary runeblade.
The dk questline and intro both support this. I know this was written before the dk zone and beta were out, however the basic premise of death being a prereq to being a dk in warcraft lore is consistent.

I have an idea for a Gnome DK, named Ziola.
She was born and raised in Gnomergan. At a young age of ten years, her parents were killed in a bad tinkering accedent, which made her pretty bitter. She was taken in by her best of friends' family, the Blastenheimer's. It was when she first started to become a warrior. Simple. Over the course of many years, she became one of Gnomergan's greatest fighters at the age of Seven-teen. Now, she didn't become a warrior out of the blue, no. Ever since she was young, she had a dream to be one of the people to help beat down the strongest of beings in Azeroth and beyond. This fueled her to become stronger.
When the Troggs appeared, she had gotten the title of 'The Uncatchable'. This was because of her ability to use her surroundings to escape and attack. Then the Gnomes were forced out of Gnomergan. Ziola was not a very happy camper, also because out of all of the Blastenheimer's, only her childhood friend, Goby, remained.
At the age of nineteen, useing the deep run tram, she and Goby went to Stay in Stormwind for a while. Goby joined the the Argent Dawn at this time. At around the Age of Twenty-one, Ziola was asked to escourt Goby through the dangerous PlagueLands to give a message to the outpost there. However, they were ambushed by undead. Ziola gave her life to give Goby the time he needed to escape, only to be caught by the Scarlet crusade.
The Uncatchable had finaly been caught.
Now, the Lich King had taken a small interest in her abilities since she went to train in Stormwind, and had raised her as a Deathknight. Ziola kept her personality and mind, because that is what helped her get so far.
Yadda Yadda, She is forced to Kill Goby, but she said she would burn his body first chance she got.
Lots of stuff happens, she kills alot of Crusaders for Fun, and the Lich king is sent back to Northrend with his tail between his legs by Tirion.
After getting the blessing of the King of Stormwind she goes adventuring.
Aaaand she still has her dream to help beat the blood out of a powerful being.
She also has a bit of a blessing she sends people off with.
"May your foe's blood always coat your blade"
Kinda creepy coming from a gnome.
I also just did this for fun... >_> considering i'm not on a RP server and I don't RP very much...
