Fake guilds in WoW
I don't like to call attention to trolls on the internet; I think they're vile little beasts who need to be put out old-school DnD style with a roll of a six sided die and a cast of a flaming arrow. But one thing in particular some trolls are doing has caught my attention: a fake WoW guild being as annoying as possible on the forums.I won't name this guild's name, or tell you where they're from, since I don't need them tracking me down in game or getting a bigger head. What they do to annoy the frack out of everyone (and that was my obligatory Battlestar Galactica reference for the week) is pretty lame - they post updates to bosses they haven't killed. For instance, right now they're claiming they've downed Brutallus. They even have a clearly photoshopd kill picture to prove it. However they haven't, and if you look at their armory profiles no one in the guild is above Kara level gear.
This guild will go and post in progression threads, taking up page after page of space. Eventually these threads have to be closed since they become full, and new ones started. However the trolls are right there to start everything again. 99% of the people on the realm ignore them, however there is always the 1% that gives them the attention they desire.
What can be done about this?
We've tried a few things. First, we tried just including them in the progression threads. "Yeah it's funny guys, we see you, now go away." After that just resulted in tons of flames and general annoyance, there was an attempt to switch to using WoWWiki.
WoWWiki is great in that it allowed us to update and correct the trolls as they edited in false information. And when the trolls went overboard and started doing too many edits, they got a temporary ban. However, that didn't do much to sway them and they started defacing the realm's Wiki page again after a few days.
I think the only way to really get around these people is to have better realm forum enforcement by Blizzard. We rarely see them step into a realm forum, or if we do, there is never any noticeable presence like there is on the Customer Service forums or the Wrath of the Lich King forums. If they were able to step up their enforcement, the effect trolls like this have on a community would be decreased. It would not eliminate them, but at least long standing threads wouldn't have to be trashed because some immature folks think they're being funny.

Posting this makes them win. They know they've succeeded when they get a post on a major site like this one.

They won this round.
(Please note that other blog posts from Wowinsider nor trolling attempts have been counted in this scoring.)

I have to agree with Killah, there is no such thing as bad publicity, and this post basically lets the trolls know they've won.
Kaljin Jun 8th 2008 7:35PM
Agreed. Congrats Adam, you're a tool.

Good job mate, you're a part of that 1%

Yes indeed! We trolls are faul creatures. Hopefully you choke on our bones, when you're trying to eat us (alive.) He, he, he!!!

...you mean like this post? Do you really think they'll never find this? When they do, do you really think they won't know exactly who you're talking about?
Don't feed the trolls.

Maybe you need to get a life and this won't bother you as much. Enjoy the people you do play with and don't worry about what other people do in a game. It's just a game.
Charlie Taylor Jun 8th 2008 5:56PM
This isn't worrying about what other people do in the game. These trolls are impacting the realm's ability to report progression by filling up threads, posting invalid information, and defacing WoWWiki pages.

I agree with Charlie Taylor. As far as the Trolls knowing they've won, so what. Hopefully, they will end up choking on their own lies when they are permanently blocked from the forums.

Hahahahahaha. Knew it had to be Adam posting this. His raiding superiority seemed to take a hit from this "fake raiding progress". Pathetic.

Of course, by not naming them, ALL similar entities can take credit for it and be encouraged. Nice going there, mate.

Never EVER feed the trolls. That's the rule number one (and you know that).

'I don't like to call attention to trolls on the internet' That's a good policy to stick with.
kunukia Jun 8th 2008 7:16PM
Man, you guys are mean. So, he fed the trolls. Like they would have stopped without this post. I found it kind of interesting, to hear that there are a$$e$ of that caliber.
Luckily I rarely go to the WoW forums, just when I am after something specific. And, I could care less about progression. I just know what my little group has done, is doing.
Ambril Jun 8th 2008 7:26PM
Oh jeez guys, this post attributes no credit to anyone specifically. If anything, these flames sound of the same mindset as internet trolls.
Starbeast Jun 8th 2008 7:35PM
AMEN!!
