Forum Post of the Day: Let's be friends
I spend an awful lot of time sifting through the various forums for quality candidates for Forum Post of the Day. My usual suspects were pretty lackluster today, so I ventured into some unknown territory. As I flipped through some of the posts in the Role Playing forum, I was briefly reminded of folks running around game shops with their arms crossed at their chests saying something to the effect of "you can't see me." I decided to give it a shot anyway.
Yitrana of Twisting nether began an in-character plea for peace between the Horde and Alliance forces. The story begins with a note posted in he World's End Tavern in
Friends--
And I call all who stand in this sacred city and read these words "friends."
How long before we heed the examples of Warchief Thrall, Lady Liadrin, Lady Jaina Proudmoore, and Priestess Tyrande and put aside our differences?
The Burning Legion has already all but destroyed the world of Draenor. The blood of the draenei will stain the hands of the orcs for all time. The sin'dorei were pulled from the brink of madness only by a hair's breadth. Marshall Garithos and the Scarlet Crusade have led thousands into savage hatred of their fellow creatures.
While Kil'jaeden, the Deceiver, has fallen, the Lich King Arthas and the generals of the Legion are undefeated, and hunger for the blood of the innocent.
When will we stop squabbling like children over baubles and embrace one another in brotherhood against our true enemies?
Let us forgive past sins and live in peace. There are plenty enough who offer us war that we need not supply our own.
Walk in the Light.

Can't we come up with a compromise? Michigan once went to war with Ohio over bits of land, and now the two states seem to be getting along alright. (Except during the annual Michigan/Ohio State football game, a time when families temporarily disown members who live on the wrong side of the state line.)
As neither a Lore Nerd nor a WoW role player, I found myself rather fascinated by the enthusiastic participation of others. What would be necessary for complete peace between the Horde and the

I'd take this as a pretty clear indication that PvP will be removed in a future patch.

Why, that explains the 3v3 tournament!

From a Lore perspective going into Northrend to fight the Lich King while still squabbling over patches of territory is just stupid. He's one of the most powerful enemies in Azeroth and his army is seemingly limitless. The Horde and the Alliance don't need to become friends, but until Arthas is dealt with they should at least be Allies.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Jessierockeron Jun 8th 2008 9:13PM
Does that mean Arthas is your ally?

I don't actively roleplay but there's always an element of it in me when I play, and while I enjoy the odd battleground, I'm hoping that the expansion doesn't force me down a route that seems petty or stupid i.e. too much fighting with the Horde. It does seem that, to some extent, this might be the case.
It's hard to justify proper warfare without making one side "the bad guys".
From what I've heard, though, it seems like it could be the Forsaken that perhaps cross the line somewhat. Will be interesting to see.

I don't mind that we're all still squabling over small tracts of land while the scourge looms over us. It's a refreshing change of pace from "Oh no, a greater evil has reared it's head and now us mortal enemies must band together and become best friends!" spiel. Besides, it's fun.

Player Characters = Zealots and Terrorists.
We're the ones doing all the skirmishes.

Hmm.
This post is actually an interesting point for me...
Now although many of you would jump to the "OMFG CAREBAER GET IT!!!!"(Personally i have 13K player kills, and i love blizz's pvp aspect. no carebears here.) conclusion, i had something kind of different in mind...
WHY are we with the alliance/ horde?
How cool would it be if you could PICK the factions you were alligned with.
like for my lock, instead of having the Gnomes/Dwarves/Draeni/N.Elves/ and Myself, humans, together,
my allied factions would be...
Tauren/Night elf/Blood Elf/Human/Forsaken(Undead).
from a PvP aspect, we could choose which battleground side we wanted to start on, (Think Counterstrike), or were allied with whatever side we were the most allied with.
Think about that for a moment.

How dare you insult us World of Warcraft players by comparing our two glorious factions to the likes of the Michigan and Ohio State rivalry!
Any right-minded WoW player would never stoop so low as to root for Ohio State!
(Go Blue!)

The PvP aspect of the game is already becoming too similar to Counterstrike, and the more it heads down that road, the less WoW remains what it started as and still should be -- a community-based MMO.
I'm not sure I can stomach any more of the CS e-sport blueprint in this RPG -- the devs have pretty much borrowed enough of the it as it is. Just consider a CS and Arena match and how they unfold:
"You enter a map and buff your stats. You move into the playing area. You kill as many of the opposing team as possible without dying yourself. The game ends and you lol or qq about the match depending on it's outcome. Rinse and repeat every few minutes or so."
Game-play like that never fit into the context of WoW before, and still doesn't today. But unfortunately, the lead developers at WoW see tournament play as the key to a game's longevity, and while that connection may be true, it comes at the expense of so much.
And as for the custom faction element you talked about, we play a part in a grand storyline. We are not the storyline. And while being able to choose which factions to align with sounds great, it would end up creating a muddled atmosphere that makes very little sense.
As it stands, we have a clear definition, and I think it's best to keep it that way.

"enough of the it"
Darn. Missed a typo. Probably missed more. Sorry grammar police! =)

Heh, I'm of about 10 or 15 minds about this one. Personally, I love the BG's. If Horde and Alliance were suddenly combined, then there would be no point in BG's. That would SERIOUSLY upset me. Another thing is, on a PVE realm, I would love to be able to Heal/talk to/assist horde characters with my alliance character. I want to be able to grind reputation with a horde character that I end up competing against to get reputation with Timbermaw Hold. As far as Raiding/Instancing, I'm not sure. I'd love to be able to run with a Horde char through certain instances. The other side of that is that there is absolutely no reason, (other then loot and exploration), a horde character would want to run Deadmines. (That I know of, I could very well be mistaken. Please correct me if I am.) I don't think I want peace as a whole amongst horde and alliance, however, I do want the opportunity to find friends amongst them. Find that strange? I just want to point out, in EPL, there is a UD subject standing amongst the (I think) Scarlet Crusade. It's not impossible for peace individually.

I would love to be able to talk to the opposite faction! I went alone to do the Kara prequests with my alliance pally and ended up with a Tauren warrior helping me. It was a very cool experience. I now have a horde level 70 and since I'm on a pve server, I can log over to talk to somebody if I want. You also see a lot of cross faction cooperation for the Nagrand Ring of Blood quest series. It would be really nice to be able to heal and speak to the other toons as well, and party up for instances. World of Warcraft, I know, but let's fight the wars against the bad guys and not toons animated by people just like us. Why should it be OK to grab herbs, mining nodes or mana cells from someone who is fighting a mob nearby just because they aren't in our faction?
batgrl Jun 9th 2008 6:00PM
As someone who plays both alliance and horde I take great pleasure in helping the "oppostion" when I'm out questing - helps that I'm on a PVE server. I don't help people (such as when someone has multiple mobs chewing off their face and could use a hand) only because it's the nice thing to do. Frankly it's the kind of thing that makes an MMO interesting - by doing the unexpected I'm not just another npc that the opposition can't talk to. Plus it might actually make someone's game a little more fun.
