Addon Spotlight: Fuzzy Logic
Welcome to a special "maintenance day" edition of Addon Spotlight. Today, we're going to take a look at one more Hunter specific mod, wrapping up my week of hunter love. Thus far, we've taken a (another) look at Fizzwidget's Feed-O-Matic and some off-the-beaten-path macros. I'm going to, once again, feature an addon that integrates macros into the major functionality and one written by my favorite developer: the ever-candid Tekkub.True to form, Tekkub wrote this addon to be simple, efficient and easy to use. The aptly named Fuzzy Logic is a macro-based addon that will react differently based on the current status of you and your pet. As with many of Tekkub's Random Crap, this addon works with pretty much no memory footprint, and very little setup required.
What I love most about this type of addon is how much they add to my own gameplay while asking so little in return. I use this, amongst others, so often during my daily grind (when I get around to rolling my Hunter), that I can't imagine life without them. In a sense, Fuzzy Logic has become part of my own "default UI".
FuzzyLogic condenses Mend, Call, Dismiss and Revive Pet down into a single keybind or macro. FuzzyLogic is smart enough to know if your pet is dead, even if it's corpse has despawned. Mend pet is cast if your pet's HP% is < 90%.
FuzzyLogic will only load on hunters, it will disable itself if loaded on any other class.
The preferred means of triggering FuzzyLogic is a simple macro:
- /click FuzzyLogicFrame
"If you wish to change the threshold for Mend/Dismiss pet out of combat, edit this line of FuzzyLogic.lua: local healthresh = 0.90
To use a keybind instead of a macro, edit this line in FuzzyLogic.lua: local binding
For example, to bind to Ctrl-P: local binding = "CTRL-P"
I can admit that of each of my alts, my Hunter is the only one below level 40. However, whenever I get around to working on it, I'm using two one-button addons to manage my pet, with one cast sequence macro thrown in to start up combat. For feeding my pet, I'm using Feed-O-Matic, and for the rest it's all about Fuzzy Logic. Alright, there's a couple more I'm using for what I consider fringe purposes, but I've got to save something for this column's future, right?
A few people have poked a little fun at me for using mods to make leveling my Hunter even easier, (autoshot + afk == win?) but the fact of the matter is that while they are certainly easy to play, I think they're hard to play well. I'm doing my best to avoid the stereotype of a bad hunter, so whatever helps me concentrate on learning the finer points of the class is well worth the heckling.
I can honestly say I haven't learned much in 25 levels, so aside from the usual "love it / hate it" comments, how about sharing some Hunter tips you wish you had known while leveling? Until the weekend, you are dismissed!

get used to it, you could be the top damage producing member of your guild *cough* and people will still accuse you of simply rolling your face across the keyboard...
as far as tips go, BM is your best spec for both leveling and end game raiding, though you will need to tweak it once you hit 70.
dont neglect your pet! Muffy isnt an afterthought, she is 250-300 of my DPS.

If you have to jump down a cliff to avoid some mobs, dismiss the pet or else it will pull all the mobs as it runs to you. I learned this the hard way in Mara on my first toon.
John Jun 10th 2008 2:47PM
hehe so did I.
WTF? where did all those mobs come from? Wipe...Clean up isle 5!
Tekkub Jun 10th 2008 3:02PM
Aw, now I have to fix that one bug in FL... and I'm probably
obligated to make a real GUI now that I have written libs that make em easy, don't I?

You're the man Tekkub!
I have find uses for pretty much everyone of your addons (my fav is Blipstick... I've always hated how the exclaimation marks are all exaggeratingly big on minimap)

Hunter tips:
Learn to trap.
Learn to turn off Growl when your pet isn't tanking anything (also in PvP, as it's a waste of focus vs a player)
Watch the traget's target. When it becomes *you*, FD... or even better, FD before that after some gnarly crits.
Multi-shot isn't only for multiple mobs. It can deal big damage to single targets as well.
No, a Sporebat is never a good idea for a pet. Ever.
For pure damage, make sure you pick a DPS pet that can learn either Gore or Claw. These are focus dumps, meaning they will use them every time they have enough focus. Talents like Go for the Throat help keep your pet spamming these attacks.
If you are in a situation where you expect your pet to die more than you want to pay to feed them, consider a Boar pet. They'll eat mage bread.

Turning off growl is easy:
#showtooltip Call Pet
/click [nopet] [target=pet,exists,dead] FuzzyLogicFrame
/petattack [pet,nomodifier]
/petfollow [pet,modifier:shift]
/petautocastoff [target=party2,exists] Growl
/petautocaston [target=party2,noexists] Growl
Why party2? because when I'm with one other person, either my leveling partner or someone I'm running thru an instance, I want growl on.
And yes, I don't use all of FL's logic anymore, only the call/rez bit.

You could at least give good tips.
Instead of watching the target's target and feigning after the fact, or screwing up your shot rotation and wasting mana, install Omen and learn to read the threat meter.
Multi-shot is a waste of DPS on single-target. A good shot rotation will be far, far more mana-efficient and increase DPS accordingly.
Wind serpents are also high DPS pets. Lightning Breath = win.
Many pet families besides the boar eat bread - i.e. wind serpents - and aren't as pitiful on damage. Besides, how broke are you that you can't afford a stack of meat to feed a proper DPS pet?
Ktok Jun 11th 2008 2:08PM
@Tekkub
Or just be smart enough to right click the Growl icon and turn it off... it's amazing how many Hunters I've run into at 70 who don't even know you can do this.
@Pucelle
I never said to not get Omen, however I believe that using a threat meter as a crutch is a sign of a player who doesn't know how to watch their aggro without help. I also didn't say to wait till you took aggro. I said to FD when/if you do, and *before* if you are high on the threat list (the threat list that any good player should be able to keep in their head without Omen).
Multishot is not, in fact, a waste of DPS, especially if a hunter happens to have specced to increase its crit chance. You are also assuming that I'm only talking about raids or boss fights, which I'm not. The writer asked for general Hunter tips, and that's what I'm giving. If you'd like to provide raid specific tips, be my guest, but highly specific advice does not invalidate my general ones.
Sure, wind serpents are good damage too. I didn't say they weren't. However, lighting breath is a nature based attack, and therefore subject to resists or even immunities that the target may have. It also costs 50 focus, while claw costs 25. The low end of lightning breath at 70 hits for a base of 99. The low end of claw at 70 hits for a base of 54, and can hit twice for every one lightning breath, *and* is not subject to resists and immunity. Gore has a chance to be slightly better, assuming a steady 50% occurrence of the double damage effect, averaging 55 damage as base minimum at 70. Obviously random chance could make it better or worse than claw, but on average, statically, it is better.
Boars and bread. I'm not broke, thank you for your concern. You, however, may need to be reminded that pets are not only there for DPS, and situations where pets die a lot are usually in groups. It is not uncommon, especially at the lower levels (which the article seems to be aimed at) for a pet to off tank for groups. True, all pets can do this well enough, but a Boar is definitely going to do a better job of it than a wind serpent. In fact, it's usually *while* doing this sort of off tanking/add management that pets tend to die. Strictly DPS pets usually don't suffer as regularly as OT capable pets.
Please remember the context of the original question when offering advice. The writer didn't ask for raid advice. Shocking as it might be to some, there are people who just want to know some general words of wisdom to help them out in the lower levels. You know, *before* you have steady shot? Remember those days? Probably not...
Starbeast Jun 10th 2008 5:11PM
I invariably end up instancing as one of the highest levels of the group with my hunter. As such, I always seem to offtank, taking one or two adds all to myself and decimating it/them, while they handle the others, so make sure to ask if that's acceptable. As a BM Hunter, you have to learn how the group leader/tank wants your pet handled, and asking is the best policy. Especially since your real DPS is in your pet.
Inscrutibob Jun 10th 2008 7:41PM
Please fix last paragraph. "I can't honestly say I haven't learned much" = you can say you have learned a lot. You have too many negatives there.
As you were...
