Wowhead adds stat weightings and more
Wowhead, a site you may have noticed I love to talk about here, just won't sit still. Today they implemented several changes:
- Stat weightings
- Search within results
- Easier filter creation
- Better source listing
- Filtered stats get their own column
Of these, I am by far the most excited about stat weightings. What am I talking about? Well, it all started with agility equivalence points, or AEP. Back in the dawn of WoW (or before BC, anyway), a rogue named Ming thought to himself: How do I tell what gear is best? Surely there is some equivalence that can be established between (say) one agility (by far the best stat for Rogues at the time) and some amount of attack power. And so he created AEP, which tell you how much of any other stat is worth the same as 1 agility. This is what is meant by stat weightings.
This concept has since been expanded and applied to just about every class, and there are many add-ons and sites that support item rankings, including (but not limited to) Loot Rank, Shadow Panther, Pawn, and Rawr. Wowhead has implemented both customizable and built-in item value scales, and seems to have some very sensible defaults for the various classes and specs. If you have any suggestions on improvements for the weighting scales, you are invited to leave feedback on this Wowhead forum thread.
One feature the Wowhead weighting system has that is missing in some other systems is intelligent gemming. Most of the time, socket bonuses are not sufficient to make it worth matching color, since one gem is overwhelmingly better than the others for your spec (for instance, Shadow priests almost always will use Runed gems). But there are exceptions. The Wowhead system will automatically put in the gems that result in the highest net rating, taking socket bonuses into account.
To briefly elaborate on the other new features: there is now a search box on any item listing that will quickly search just within displayed results for that listing; filters can now be quickly created by right-clicking any column heading; source columns now show what NPC drops or sells the item you're looking for, and what zone they're in, instead of just saying "Drop" or "Vendor" as it did before; and if you filter for a stat, that stat now gets its own column in the item listing (example).

These changes are nothing less than orgasmic. Wowhead is now, more than ever, my one stop shop.

Hm... nice. It needs a bit of refinement, but a good first cut.
By refinement I mean, for example, that it weights several 2H weapons higher for shadow priests than 1H weapons because of the damage. But, of course, if you carry a 1H weapon you'll also carry an OH. Of course, you can tell it you only want to look at MH weapons, so it's completely workable. Just be aware that the presets might need some work - they're a place to start, not a bible.

The weightings are designed to work with the existing filter system, not replace it. You should limit your search results the same way you would before, by selecting the type of items and source you would like to see from the filters drop-down. The weights simply provide a means of scoring and sorting your results to find the best match. If you don't apply filters, you'll end up seeing everything (so long as its score is positive).
As far as one-handers and two-handers go, take a look at the "Score" column. If you add up the scores of a main hand and off hand spellcaster item, the total score is what you should compare to that of a two-hander. Two-handers rank higher because by themselves they do have better stats than a one-hander with nothing else in the off hand.

Its actually works great for SP's from what I've seen. Just looked at 1h maces and their list matches up perfectly to the best gear list on shadowpriest.com

Epic. Too bad it doesn't weight PvP yet.

That's probably why wowhead is asking for suggestions. Send in yours! :D

Nice... the only thing WoWhead is missing is the advanced Allakhazam item search, thats the only time I go away from WoWhead.

Yes, Eliah mentioned that as well as 3 other similar tools, complete with links. Congrats on pointing it out.

D'oh!
I read the whole article, and somehow, I managed to miss that.

I love the idea of item weightings but . . .
Mana regeneration is more important for hunters than aglity, lolwut?
RogueJedi86 Jun 12th 2008 7:10AM
Well I do see a lot of hunters complaining on the forums about going oom. :)
Skosiris Jun 12th 2008 3:09AM
I see you didn't do your homeworks!
You need to understand how weighting works.
"Mana Regen 100 Agility 25" doesn't mean that Mana regen is more important than Agility, all it means is that 4 Agility = 1 MP5.
You might want to read more about the concept here:

Is there an addon that using this AEP system and tracking your build and class will tell you when something drops if it is an update for what you're currently wearing?
Waterloo Jun 12th 2008 8:45AM
Try Pawn. Works for me.

I should've read better and seen that the links provided were not all websites but websites AND addons :P (pawn is mentioned in the article but i thought it referred to a website)

Fantastic addition to what is quickly becoming my only website for item info.
Their stat weights are T4 level to start, so pay attention and change items according to your level of content.
I do like that I can just say Ap =1 Haste =1.74 and get accurate info without having to resort to weird numbers. Going to 100 is a pain.
Jim Jun 12th 2008 12:59PM
Caveat emptor. This is a great function, but do not trust the presets. You are going to get all kinds of crazy results because the stats they choose to rank may not match yours....i.e. including strength but not Attack Power in Rogue weightings, or not including dmg range on weapons. Just a note.
I am sure this is going to be an outstanding tool, otherwise.

What an awesome new tool; congratulations, Wowhead. People will debate the details of the ranking weightings for specs forever. That's fine, it's great to have a place to start and easily apply different models.
The feral dps and tank models come from http://emmerald.net . Good choice.
