New DC Comic series to reveal Ashbringer's backstory
One of the most endearing new stories to be introduced into the Warcraft mythos by WoW is that of the Ashbringer, the blade of the Scarlet Highlord Mograine, which slew the Scourge by the hundreds and might have singlehandedly redeemed Azeroth, were it not for the treachery of his son, Renault. Unfortunately, beyond that and a little scene in Old Hillsbrad where we see the first steps of its creation, we don't really know much else of the story behind the fabled blade.
In September 2008, we'll learn a little bit more of it. On September 10th, DC Comics' Wildstorm division will release the first of a 4 issue miniseries that covers the history of the Ashbringer, both the sword and the wielder, Alexandros Mograine. The series is being written by Blizzard Creative Director Mickey Nielson, with art by Ludo Lullabi and Tony Washington. The first book will feature cover art by Chris Robinson, with a variant cover by Lullabi and Washington.
I know I'm excited. In fact, I think I'll call my local comics store now and make sure they'll carry it. Then again, I'm also a bit concerned. If this comic book gives us Ashbringer backstory that's important to WoTLK, does that mean they aren't releasing it until the series is done? I don't want to wait til 2009 to play a Death Knight, that's for sure!

Id like to know where such a weapon was forged to start with.

Well that's going to be just awesome. The Ashbringer is one of the cooler bits of lore, and undoubtedly going to be important to Wrath.

Do you connect every bit of news to WotLK's release date? It's not like this book is going to drastically alter anything we already know. It's just going to turn the info into a coherent story for people who don't want to sift through WoWWiki for bits of dialogue that only the wielder of Ashbringer can see in game.

They didn't release the last part of the Sunwell trilogy until months after Burning Crusade came out, and it had plots crucial to that expansion.

That art sample is ... not good. Mograine looks like a half-orc/half-dwarf.

Great, yet another lackluster WoW comic series :(

Did the preview of the comic reveal Highlord Mograine's first name to be Alexandros?
An odd first name. Pretty traditional, but I can't say I expected it. It kinda seemed better without him having a first name, just being simply Highlord Mograine.

Guess so.

The miniseries starts on September 10. That means it ends on December 10. Wrath of the Lich King could be out either by the end of December or around January 2009.

Ashbringer....
It had to be done sooner or later. On a serious note, though, I can NOT wait for this. :D

The leader of Knights of the Ebon Blade was said to be Highlord Darion Morgraine. Since they revealed The Ashbringer's name, it must be another Morgraine.

The best part of this announcement is that it makes people stop thinking Darion Mograine is him.
Darion Mograine is probably the second son. While we were told he was in Outland it is possible Blizzard can explain it that when the Dark Portal re-opened he went through then became a Death Knight somehow and broke free.

I have been reading the WoW comic since the first issue, like most comics it started out slow but is starting to hit its stride with the King of Stormwind story arc. I hope Blizzard uses the comic to fill in and flesh out some of the plot holes in the game.

I bet this mini-series is in the can well before the expansion itself comes out.

I don't think this comic mini-series around Ashbringer has any influence on the release date of WotLK. The quest series with Mograine will be fully implemented in the game, and you don't need any knowledge beyond what you buy with the game box to follow and completely understand the story. If you're a fan of that storyline, you *can* buy the comic books which may (or may not) reveal further details.

Good news I guess, but I really hope the writing improves. The plot/story/character development (or lack thereof) in the current series is pretty bad.
