Pardo says Warcraft IV is "one of the ideas on the table" after SC2
Our good friends at Gamedaily recently got a chance to sit down and talk with Rob Pardo, VP of Blizzard, and he dropped hints about yet another new game that they might be working on. No, not Starcraft II, or the rumored Diablo 3, or even the long-awaited (and unfortunately, probably never coming) Lost Vikings sequel. Nope -- he hinted that after the release of Starcraft II, whenever that happens, Blizzard's RTS team might be hard at work on... Warcraft IV.Don't hold your breath, of course (this is Blizzard we're talking about) -- this would be after the current real-time strategy game is done, and Pardo says it would be "one of the the ideas on the table," so it's not exactly in the planning stages yet. But it's interesting to hear that Blizzard may still return to the Warcraft universe under the RTS banner -- we've seen such a different aspect of the world in the MMO, it would be very strange to go back to controlling these units from the top down.
Pardo also says that a console version of WoW is pretty much out of the question at this point -- if there is going to be a super-successful console MMO, it's not going to be World of Warcraft, as this game was designed for PC and has gone through so many iterations since that Blizzard isn't at all interested in trying a port. We are still waiting for that playable version of the Molten Core console game, though...

Update: Whoops, the interview is a bit old (Pardo said this last year). Still, news to me that Blizzard might bring RTS back into the Warcraft universe, but considering that Starcraft II doesn't even have a rumored release date yet, we're going to be waiting a long, long time.

That interview was done in August of 2007... not exactly news.

More like the safest idea on the table.
Sounds like they're turning into America's Squaresoft, and they'll be milking the same old fantasy franchise for the rest of whatever. But at least the FF series doesn't lock itself down to the same ongoing story (or even the same genre).
I think Blizzard's great from a game design standpoint, but I'm sick to death of the Warcraft universe. Pull your writers out of their comfort zone and give us something new.

Warcraft again? Nah, dont think so. Probably a new universe or
hopefully Diablo 3.

I doubt we'll see a Warcraft 4 unless it's set in the past, perhaps even the War of the Ancients.
It couldn't be set during WoW because there's no real place to set it. It couldn't be set in the future, because it would limit what they could do in WoW. If it were set far enough in the future from WoW, it could be used as a bridge between WoW and WoW 2, but that's quite a bit less likely than setting it in the past.
There are enough players who care about the WoW story development that I don't think Blizzard would "give the ending away" so to speak by setting a Warcraft game "after" WoW. Could be wrong though. /shrug

Bliz have given themselves a rather flexible plothole as far as timelines are concerned in the form of the bronze dragonflight. All they need is Nozdormu to show up saying 'that was one possible future, but this is what really happened' and presto, story picks up from where is left off after WC3. of course, this will be like smacking their credibility with a sledgehammer.

Heh... good point. "Oh it was just a dream" sort of thing. I hope they wouldn't stoop to that though just to put another game out.

I Hope.. I crave this so so bad!..
Please make this true :)

PLEASE, no more warcraft, no more starcraft, no more diablo. Blizzard is long overdue to come up with something completely new. And preferably something much different from their RTS's or fantasy builds.

Seacraft?
Yosh Jun 16th 2008 2:08PM
the only thing that counts is lost vikings.... *drools*
Rodrígo Jun 16th 2008 2:23PM
Yay, more lore content for us to kill off....
Honestly, all of the great heroes that were created in RoC were destroyed in either TFT or WoW (BC)...
Shadowfury Jun 16th 2008 4:14PM
Who was destroyed in TFT? Garithos?
Everyone from WC3 is/will be alive in WoW in some kind of way.

And Schramm comes through with yet another hilarious post.
"Our good friends at Gamedaily recently got a chance to sit down"
RECENTLY??????
HAHAHAHA
Mike seriously, you've obviously been working too hard. Take a break, get some rest come back refreshed and without quoting something a little more "recent" than ELEVEN MONTHS AGO.
Sheeeesh, Mike.

This could work. Do the various epic fights across WoW and BC, but in army format. Not sure how they'd relate to each other though, many instances in succeeding patches seem random and completely unrelated to the previous missions. Unless they set them up into things like The Hellfire Peninsula Assault, the Plaguelands Assault, etc.
A chain of related missions. For example, doing missions in Westfall and moving up to a full-on assault of the Defias in the Deadmines with a big army could work.
I am stretching though.
