Is Blizzard stealing ideas from WAR?
Waaagh! is a blog about Warhammer Online (there are a few of them springing up lately, and our sister site Massively is doing a great job of covering news about the upcoming MMO), and Syp, who writes over there, says his blood pressure rose just a little bit when reading the news that achievements might be coming to the World of Warcraft. When news first broke about WAR, which is made by a company called Mythic (the original creators of Dark Age of Camelot, now working with EA), they got a lot of flak for making a game that looked a lot like WoW. But now that details are coming out about Warhammer, including this really interesting achievements-style feature called the Tome of Knowledge (which basically tracks what your character does around the game and gives you rewards for what you do), the allegations of imitation are going the other way. Is Blizzard ripping off Warhammer now?In point of fact, yes. Blizzard didn't start from scratch with World of Warcraft (in fact, many of their designers were actually players of other games, including Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot) -- instead, they (as they've always done with their games) took a formula and tweaked it close to perfection. And of course, since Warhammer is (if you listen to the hype) supposed to be WoW's biggest competitor going forward, it's not surprising at all that the ideas coming out of WAR are also making waves around the Blizzard offices.
That said, give WAR a chance.
Just because Blizzard's lifting the idea doesn't mean they're straight-out copying Warhammer -- as we noted, Lord of the Rings Online has the same type of achievements system, and Michael Zenke of Massively actually told me in their podcast that the Tome of Knowledge feature in Warhammer is actually much different (and better) from the "achievements" idea -- it's actually a record of what you do in game rather than a random set of goals to meet. So not only is it probable that the two systems will be very different from one another in function and implementation, but Blizzard had other influences as well -- they're not just outright stealing Warhammer's playbook.
I do think, though, as Syp says, that this is a sign that Blizzard wants to innovate and compete with Warhammer on their level. I'll leave it to you to decide whether Blizzard is "worried" or not about the WAR release -- Blizzard is the 800 lb. gorilla of the MMO world at this point, and any game with 10 million players doesn't have much to worry about any more anyway -- they've made their money, and even if Mythic steals half their customers, Blizzard has still made their gigantic mark in the record books. But I do think that it's a sign that even if Warhammer wants to be the shiny new online game this year, Blizzard isn't going to go quietly-- they're going to aggressively try to keep their years-old MMO on top of the heap.
Wrath is still in development, of course, and we may never actually see an achievements-style system in WoW. But why wouldn't Blizzard say this fall, as Syp speculates, "Why do you want to try WAR, when we have all of the features they have, and all of the content that they don't?" If WAR really is going to threaten their domination of the MMO market, wouldn't they push for innovation just as hard as Mythic and EA?

Has it been confirmed that achievements will be in the final version of WotLK?
This is probably the reason Blizzard like to keep a F&F beta quiet rather than having people data mine the files and assume that everything they see in the alpha will be in the endgame and get worked up.
I was unaware that Warhammer came up with the idea of adding achievements to games.

WoW definately owes a debt to EQ, EQ showed they what worked and what didn't.
dan Jun 18th 2008 9:12AM
achievements have been datamined. Go check out the latest info from the wikidot.
Jay Jun 18th 2008 11:58AM
Yes, but Blizzard have not confirmed that they will be in the final game have they?

What? Warhammer getting flak for copying WoW's look? I believe Tycho said it best.

Still, I enjoy WoW and am not all that enthused about Warhammer Online. I'll probably give it a try though, as that's exactly how I felt about WoW.

Achievements are not a new idea. Ever heard of a little game called Halo?
Next thing you know, the WAR fanboi's will be accusing WoW of stealing orcs. Or using WASD for movement.

What's funny about your comment is that Warcraft DID steal Warhammer's orcs. Warcraft 1 was originally supposed to be a Warhammer RTS game, which is why Warhammer and Warcraft orcs look so similar. Warcraft lore takes the same names and events from Warhammer lore, like the "Sundering" and the subsequent split of the elf factions. It goes on and on.
It even happened with Starcraft--the amount of stuff it took from Warhammer 40,000 is astonishing, particularly the Zerg.

I think this sorta is the proper response when i hear about warhammer/blizzard stealing something from the other.

That PA comic is just made of sooooo many different kinds of win. Easily my favourite PA.
"I will open one of my six mouths, and I will sing the song that ends the Earth."
They even did a kick-ass T-shirt with that comic's text on it. I don't think they have them anymore.

I like how they immediatly jump to the latest competitor and say "stealing idea".
Achievement systems in MMOs have been around for a while, I know City of Heroes had an elaborate system based on kills, key quests, explorations etc.... hell it was even before XBox Live Achievements.
The concept of Achievements is not a new thing or a stolen thing... its an simple common idea, ever since the boy scouts said "You can tie a know, have a badge"
Leviathon Jun 17th 2008 9:34PM
Achievement things in games pretty much have been around since the beginning of gaming :p

"Is Blizzard ripping off Warhammer now?"
I know what you mean, but it bears pointing out again that Blizz has been ripping off Warhammer tabletop for more than a decade, so it's hardly out of character.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this. Gotta love the ignorant masses.

Again, we return to the old history lesson.
'Warcraft' was originally a 'Warhammer Fantasy' title. Blizzard created and developed the original PC title for Games Workshop before GW declined their participation. Blizzard didn't want to let all that work go to waste, so they changed many of the terms and gameplay elements, in order to release it on their own terms. Subsequently, after more than a few re-writes, the two titles went in two completely different directions.
Now, nearly two decades later, the two are poised to go head-to-head for subscribers. 'Warcraft' began as a 'Warhammer' property, but has grown into its own setting through the work of creative staff like Chris Metzen. So, historically, 'Warcraft' was originally founded as a derivative title, but grew up and became its own property through hard work and good storytelling.
As for 'Achievements:' Steam and XBox Live have had this feature for ages. In fact, some Steam-based titles, such as 'Team Fortress 2,' are about to begin using Achievements as criteria for rewarding players in special ways, with customized weapons, new appearances, etc. It's a common yet popular new game mechanic, and 'Warcraft' and 'Warhammer' are simply jumping on the bandwagon.

I personally would be extremely pissed off if Blizzard wasn't stealing good ideas from other MMO's.
johnthediver Jun 18th 2008 10:34AM
This might be the best comment here. Yes MMO's should steal good ideas from each other...isnt that innovation?
darian Jun 18th 2008 12:01PM
If the shoe fits...
...but often it doesn't.
Case in point: Halo's regenerating shields. It completely changed the FPS dynamic from "Run away hoping to get health power ups and not die" to "Use terrain to tactical advantage, turning the tables". It was awesome.
Then every FPS and its twin brother's roommate's cousin's hot girlfriend's ex-sugar daddy's mother's grandson tried to shoehorn it into gameplay. I remember trying several after Halo and thinking, "Wait, why the hell is my health regenerating?" Combined with inspirationless (and practically terrainless) corridor-style levels the mechanic was pretty lame.
That's not to say other games haven't successfully duplicated the mechanic, but that far too many implemented it just because Halo had without any thought for whether it made sense either in story or in gameplay.
I have faith that Blizzard knows what they're doing, but I'm not one to recommend blindly copying other games.

i don't see the problem with blizzard, or any other games creator borrowing mechanics ideas. they wont be the first, and they wont be the last. It has to be a good thing if the end result, and subsequent games are better as a result.
my problem is when sites such as this try to be cool and point the finger of blame without actually knowing everything that came before.
Rabbit Jun 20th 2008 10:10AM
To answer your question--no, theft is not innovation.
