Examples of "incidental RP"
I love this idea from Matt on WoW LJ -- he points out a few great examples of what he calls "incidental RP." The vast majority of players in the game wouldn't call themselves "roleplayers" (and lots of them might make fun of people who do), but all of us, in playing the game, are buying into the lore and the roles we're playing to a certain extent. If you've ever yelled "for the Horde!" or felt a strange hatred towards Gnomes, guess what -- you've been roleplaying. His examples are a little more silly -- his girlfriend hates parrots (because one of them once killed her in Deadmines), and he'll sometimes answer NPCs, even though they never respond. I do the same thing -- /salute an NPC after grabbing a quest, or yelling "and stay down!" after dropping a major boss or a mob that's given me trouble. That kind of stuff is a far cry from the heavy RP that can go on in game, but just the same, it makes the game more fun. And just like good art, it puts you even more in someone else's (fictional or otherwise) shoes -- what would it feel like to be someone given a quest, or a real member of a group like the Horde? Maybe that's why roleplaying is the wave of the future.
Any other great examples of incidental roleplaying? It's another mark of how great Blizzard's game is that the setting, art, and experience of playing pushes people who wouldn't normally get into character to really think about what the person they're playing is all about.

No, I spit at Little People in real life too.

Wow, the first poster won the thread.

Man, they don't like being called little people.
They prefer "Yes you ARE! Yes you ARE!*random baby noises*" -- Sarah Silverman told me so.

I take revenge on NPC's. If I'm beating up a pair of mobs and collect more than I can handle due to patrols or respawns and I'm forced to flee, I make sure to come back and take my revenge. I don't say anything fruity or emote something, though I have been known to cannibalize mobs out of spite.
jbodar Jun 18th 2008 7:28PM
YES! I'm not the only one? Sometimes I take it too far though, and I kill everyone of that race/tribe/species in the area. Nothing like RPing genocide, yeppers.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does things like that. Parrot-death, my level-60 week long murder of EVERY murloc camp I could remember (oh, that was a glorious week...)

I did that once in Westfall. I went back at a high lvl into Moonbrook and killed every human out of spite and revenge.

Always when I'm near Duskwood I take few minutes to go to Raven Hill Cemetery and kill that Mor'Ladim guy. Man, after all the "Your worn equipment suffers 10% durability" he caused on me, when I was leveling there - he and I have no chance to be friends anymore.

I like to insult the mobs, especially the ogres, before I pull 'em. Something juvenile like 'hey! ur momma wears army boots!'. It always gets a chuckle out of my running buddies.

Their is a vendor that I won't go to in Shat anymore because he said. "For the Alliance."
RogueJedi86 Jun 19th 2008 10:24AM
Well "For the Alliance" did come first. The High Elven Rangers in Warcraft 2 started it, then the Horde copied it in WC3 and WoW.
Minos Jun 19th 2008 4:54PM
Every time the Skyhandler at Blackwind Landing sends my Tauren off to Ogri'La saying "For the Alliance", I check the underside of my ray for explosives.

I randomly mock NPCs. Tyrande, thanks for all your help in beating Archimonde by crying for us. That's what you did. Thanks a ton.
I also randomly do things like use the orb that turns you into a blackwhelp and mourn the death of Onyxia.

once when i was healing a durn run on my priest we had to wait just before the last boss while we swithced tanks or something and i decided to go into tarren mill chapel and host a sermon lecturing about the light and praying for our success against the coming storm lol, evry1 got rlly into it to. its stuff like tht which makes me want to switch to an RP server.
Sean Riley Jun 18th 2008 5:50PM
That's awesome. Even in a hardcore RP guild, that kind of activity would gain props, if you did it well. Much respect.

Apparently, I've been role playing the whole time because...
I speak ... in complete... sentences!
Steve Jun 17th 2009 7:30AM
I always got a kick out of giving a /slap to enemies or the random NPC.
Vulpes-Wolf Jun 18th 2008 6:00PM
Does using the /moo emote as a tauren count? :O
Milktub Jun 18th 2008 5:53PM
I bring my elf hatred full force. With the exception of guildmates, I will not make financial transactions with Blood Elves. Given the choice between two people for a dungeon run, I will not choose the elf. I refuse to go to the Isle of Quel'danas because there are elves there.

When I'm dual-boxing, my two characters (NE and dwarf) often pick fights between each other in Guild Chat. Leads to equal parts entertainment and confusion. One of the officers once got a tell from a third party to the effect of: "Those two REALLY hate each other... are you sure they're all right in the same guild?"
